Tactical 12 Gauge Recommendations?

Software is mo' crucial than the hardware. Get any of the shotguns mentioned on this and try to wear it out. When the pile of empty hulls reaches your knees, you'll notice you've a fine tactical shotgun there...

Agree.

Dave,
Neat thing about my Youth H&R Topper 20 gauge Single Shot - I don't have to bend over to retrieve the hulls.
I don't get my tennis shoes dirty standing next to the bucket of fired hulls either.

I also learned if you cut a hole in a target, shoot slugs into hole , and not "miss the hole" you don't have to walk down to check/change targets.

;)

All that bending over , walking back and forth just cuts into shooting time...
:D

Tony:

What id the bbl length on that puppy?

I would like a trunk/truck long gun for my suburban commando vehicles (PU truck & Honda Uglyment) & a compact, folding stock magazine-fed shotgun looks about right. I really don't need the picatinny rails all over it, though.

Economy

I'm the kind of guy who likes diversity in his toys. If I can get them for less $$$ then all the better so I can buy accessories, or completely different toys. I haven't seen this one recommended so far and that is the

Stoeger 2000 Defense

It uses the same Gas System as the Benelli (same company as Berretta and Benelli) and it MSRP's for less than 500 bucks! Save your dough and get it! You can also get the mercury recoil comp for it!

I tried a buddies right next to his Benelli M2 Tactical and I didn't see enough of a difference (it was there but barely due to the gell stock) to pay an extra 700 bucks for the Benelli! Go with Stoeger, you won't regret it.

Yet another vote for a Saiga 12 ... and one converted by Tony for bonus points.

I love mine (need to get a Halo rail though).

My second choice would be the FN SLP (not the newer Mark 1 but the original 18" gun with the better sights).

The Saiga 12 , are they legal in all states . I am in , sorry to say , New York .:barf: How much do they go for .

Has anybody done any chrony work with short-bbl shotguns & slugs?

For instance, how much velocity is lost when one goes from 18>16>14>12>10>8 inch length bbls?

It ought to be some loss, but how significant?

We chronoed 22, 18, 12, and 8 inch barrels with buck and slugs. Ben Shepherd had the actual numbers, until a wad took out his chrono. :)

I can't remember exactly, but I seem to recall that the stubby little 8 inch was like 300-400 fps slower than the 18, depending on the load.

But how LOUD was the 8" barrel? Could you hear it in the next county? Did you get an impressive fire ball? That would truly be tacitcal.

I like the police model specials in Remingtons 11/87.

Well, the 8 inch was made for door breaching, so it does have some use, no matter how much I hate the word tactical. There is something really cool about an MP5 sized 9-shot 12 gauge semi-auto.

Shotguns are lower pressure. I don't think the blast was that much louder. Still quieter than a 5.56 indoors. I have hearing damage from firing a 5.56 inside a concrete basement. Noisy little bastard. Which is why I'm such a fan of suppressors now I suppose. :)

The Mossy 590A1 is awful nice to shoot. If the "tacti-black" is too much, put wood on it!

Zundfolge sez: "My second choice would be the FN SLP (not the newer Mark 1 but the original 18" gun with the better sights)."

OK, you get the one with the cool sights (6+1) and I'll take the newer Mark I (8+1).

Hey, maybe it'll be an upgrade for me from the little bead on the end of my trap guns. Ya think? :)

Seriously Gents, are FNs quality shotguns vis-a-vis Beretta, Browning, Perazzi, Krieghoff et al? Does Perazzi make a 18" Tactical?

From shooting 3 gun matches I would say the most reliable semi-autos that look "tactical" would be the Benelli and the Winchester. I have a Remington Competition Master, a now-discontinued model that I've had to do some work on to get the way I want.

There's a guy named Benny Hill in Texas who can set you up with a Benelli with everything you need. The Winchester Super X 2 and X3 seem to be ready to go out of the box.

The great thing about an 870 is that if you tac it up you can then change it out really quickly to look like a duck hunting gun that won't scare the boys at the range. Plus there are accessories of every imaginable kind.

I had a Win 1300 Defender. If you practice much with it you'll find out quick that 00 buck SD loads will end your session fast. It kicked hard  and just wasn't any fun to practice with, and I'm not particularly recoil sensitive.

So I went out and got myself a Mossberg 590 A1 with the full Vang-Comp treatment, mag extension, and a Knox stock. It is cheap to give the full treatment to because it comes with very serviceable ghost ring sights. I have maybe 1100 in the gun.

Perfect. ;)

I can shoot it at an IDPA target - aim at the head - and 7 of 9 buckshot will be on the head at 27 yards. It is just an awesome tac gun.
