Tactical BPS

I own a browning BPs that i love dearly. it is an excellent shotgun, that has never failed me. i like the bottom eject feature and the fact that the safety is on top. But, i would like a tactical shotgun too, if i bought another BPs could i fit it with an extended mag tube and a short barrel? how about a pistol grip and side saddle? PROS? CONS?

i like the idea of a tactical bps mostly because of the ease of reloading it. with the bps i can flip the gun over, drop in a shell and feed it in, two at a time if i want using a second shell to push in the first. with my 870 i get my finger caught in the lift, needless to say this slows down ones reload.

let me know your thoughts on this.
or any other neat tac shotty ideas.

btw anyone know if i can get an 18 in barrel for my bps?

Somebody else will reply, but just having a shotgun that you can deploy in an emergency is already the height of "tactical."

I happen to really like the BPS, it is my second favorite pump shotgun. Slick and tough, nice gun.

I see no reason that it couldn't be modified, however it is going to be a custom job most of the way. Pistol grip only stocks suck, but if you are talking about a full stock with a pistol grip, I know of none made for the BPS.

BPS magazine extensions do seem to exist, but they are rare. I'm not sure what options you have in shorter barrels either. I have heard that Auto 5 extensions are the same, but I've haven't seen one of those either, and I don't know if that is true.

As for side saddles, you can use one of the 3gun gear kind that stick to the side of the receiver, that way you don't have to worry about finding a plastic side saddle with the holes in the right place, as I'm not aware of anything like that for the BPS. You would however have to trim down the forearm as the BPS forearm covers about half of the receiver. In fact you could stick a side saddle on each side as there is no ejection port to cover.

As for reloading the 870, it is all in the technique. I do however like speed loading Mossbergs and Brownings because I can go a little bit faster with out the loading gate.

I've thought about building a riot BPS a few times, but I've always refrained as I can never seem to find a good deal on one, and I can always seem to find 870s for about half as much.

just out of curiosity, i saw another thread where most of the posts had negative things to say about pistol grips on shot guns. what gives?

PG only are a PITA as far as hitting anything, recoil , and are for specialized needs. Like Badger in and of bush planes , and having one slung at all times for bear. Armored guards ( ain't much room back there ), LEO, Military, SWAT...have spl needs.

Most folks will not practice, many ranges do not allow one to practice...many have restriction on min bbl length...which the full stock guns with bbls shorter than 23" can't become effective due to no practice.

Shotguns are unique in their ability of being so versatile with a variety of loads. Pistol grips on full stocks "can", "may" and / or "do" limit the shotguns' versatility.

Full reg stocks can do any and everything.

Add a pistol grip and swinging on a quail , skeet target, or running deer...might not be such a good idea.

May impede swing, or impede movement in a narrow hallway, needing to shoot weak side, and the gun canted as you hug the floor and or wall for cover/concealment to afford a shot.

Just some thoughts.

Do try shooting with whatever set up you have from the floor, overhead , fetal , on one's back...

I do this with handguns and rifles as well. 1) will the gun run,? 2) can I run the gun? Gotta fed, extract, no matter what..."serious" can get "serious".

I can just picture friend Corriea, all 6'17" of him, dressed in jeans and black T shirt with a caption on the chest saying "Your woman whispers my name in her sleep".

He's armed with a 10 gauge BPS with a stick on side saddle on EACH side of the receiver, giving the approximate width of a 63 Bonneville. Belt of ammo around his waist.That BPS has been done in flat black with a small but visible skull and crossbones in white on the flat of the stock. The ammo is all brass cased 0000 loaded to Mach 1.7. When he shoots, it registers on the Seismograph in Palo Alto.

That 10 gauge has been bobbed to a 20" barrel and sports the 17" Enfield bayone from WWI. As he spikes it into the ground in lieu of racking it with those wussy little 12 gauges, we note the grip has been modified to include a set of brass knuckles, the kind with spikes.

He glances around the group gaping at him and growls in Darth Vader like tones...

" I'm here for the shotgun segment and I hate to lose".....

Do you think the other competitors may have trouble concentrating?....

I have been thinking the same thing. I think that there has to be a IC slug barrel out there for them somewhere. I will agree that Correia is right about them always being twice as much as an 870 or Mossberg. The thing is that I really like them. I handled one the other day for the first time and I was sort of in awe. It just feels so solid and stout. I definitely have one on my wish list and I plan to buy one and start making it into an HD gun as soon as possible.
All I really want to get for the one I am working on is a IC or no choke barrel with rifle sights but if I have to I can have the existing barrel chopped to 18" and left at that.
While we are at it, does anyone know where I could find a barrel like that?
18" - 20"?

If you are interested in a tactical BPS, look no further than super-gunsmith Ned Christiansen over at Michiguns (www.m-guns.com). Ned likes the BPS as a "tactical" shotgun, too, and has done some extensive modifying to his. It's been a while since I looked, but I believe that he has some discussion about it on his site. Give him a call and he'd probably be glad to talk to you about what he's done and why.

I'm picturing it having a 12ga 870 mounted underneath the barrel in lieu of a bayonet. He would refer to the 870 as his BU "mouse gun".

Why not just build or buy an Ithaca? Same basic design, with more options, and less cost.
