Hello, it's me again, and I'm entertaining the idea of building a tactical bolt-action rifle that I could risk my life on even though I don't have to:)

So, I'm kinds new to this, my tactical rifle right now is a Remington 700 SPS-V in .308 with an HS Precision thumbhole stock on the way:banghead::banghead: I'm still waiting.

I want to build a rifle built off a Remington 700 clone, and there are a few but I'm not sure as to which one I want (that is if I go through with this). I'm thinking Surgeon would be a very good choice.

I'm also not sure which barrel or stock either.

I'm thinking Surgeon action, Bartelien 20" barrel, Jewell triger, and an HS precision of some kind (probaly like the M24).

I'm not to sure about the Surgeon action because I want to the back up sights like the M24, so as you might can tell, I'm trying to build an M24 but with a 20" barrel.

Oh and I cant desire between Leupold or Nightforce either.

One thing is for certain, it will be chambered in the wonderful and my all time favorite the great .308 Winchester.

This rifle will most likely always shhot the Federal GMM 175 grain bullets.

Or should I just buy a rifle from a custom shop like GA Precision, Tactical Operations, or some other company.

It must (a big preference) have a 20" barrel.

Please give me any suggestions or thoughts, i'm trying to stay within $3000 or less for the rifle only.

Thanks

Yep. Give George Gardner a call. He has some standard type builds in stock, and even if he doesn't have what you want already built, he can build it for you quicker than anyone else because he carries many of the parts in stock that other smiths have to wait months to get, such as McMillan stocks.

Does he use HS stocks, ive just heard that you have to maintain the glass beding, and a bedding block you don't have to, is this true?

GA George is out of commision on any new builds till August of this year, but you could call and see exactly when the will open up to new builds. They have a huge backlog of customer projects and are getting caught up.

Oh, I'm definately not ordering this year, just getting an idea of what's good out there, mabey in 2011, or in August in God blesses me with a large sum of $$$$:)

Has anyone bought a complete rifle from Surgeon Rifles?

Thanks

Sounds like a good build, but remember, you will still have to get a gunsmith to build it.

I don't own a surgeon rifle, but i know someone who does, and he loves it. Super accurate, amazing quality. (i still have never fired it, so i can't directly comment on that:()

I had George glass bed a McMillan A5 stock for my FN SPR about 6 years ago, and it's holding up just fine. However, I'm sure he would use a HS stock if you wanted to go that route.

I would easily bet my life on a bolt rifle, unequalled dependability, more than even an AK and WAY more accurate. My second pick for survival would either be an M14, G3, or an AK47/AK74.

I'm just wanting to buy an excellent Remington 700 that is one, if not the best for about $3000 or less.

Please keep up the comments:)

Ok to settle the whole semi vs. bolt, I prefer bolts, just to settle that, aulthogh the AR10 from GAP is supposed to be super accurate, and it's cheaper that their "Rock", I just love the simplicity of a bolt action rifle.
