You have $150 to spend on sights for a semi auto rifle/carbine in 5.56. Shots will be at 300 yrds or less, most under 100yrds. If you were in this situation and already had BUIS what would you buy? I am looking at Vortex, Barska and NcStar. Any ideas, experience, or suggestions?

If I were you I would take that $150 to the bank and save for an Aimpoint, EOTech, or Trijicon sight. It'll be worth it in the long run. In the mean time get good with those irons! :D

Keep saving for an Aimpoint, EOTech, or Bushnell Holosight. $50 more will also get you a Millet DMS-1, which is a much better option than those you listed.

Of the ones you list, Barska and NcStar are pretty much the same sights, with NcStar being cheaper since they import direct. The little NcStar holographic sights hold up well under recoil, but they don't like getting wet. You should be able to get the little NcStar D4B for under $60.

I second the Millet DMS-1, 1-4X - 24mm as a good starter. In 1X it's a pretty good CQB fast acquisition sight. Has a lighted donut-dot reticle, donut for close range & fast acquisiton. Dot is 1 MOA dia. for precision aiming at higher magnification. Millet, while a USA company, has this scope built in China. There are more expensive versions of this basic set-up by bigger-name companies, probably mfgd in the USA.

I have ordered the Millet DMS for my FNAR. Are these others really x8 to 10x better than the cheap ones. I use Bushnell Elite 3200/4200 on bolt rifles and get excellent quality. Do I really have to spend twice that to get a good sight for an AR/Sig556?

Bushnell Trophy MP

Got mine for about 160. Its been absolutely great.

Jaws,
Thanks for the link to m4carbine.net forum. Good summary.

Eventually I'll save enough pennies and spring for one of the modern holographic/reflex/whatever sights. Some have said that the companies that have the miltary contracts can charge two or three prices for their optics, and I could get the equivalent technology in an off brand for much less money if I knew what I was doing. Dang, I hate it when that happens....
