I've just had an idea. I work in a "disarmed-victim" zone. I carry my Spyderco and my wits, but I would like a discrete weapon with more reach.

Enter the tactical umbrella. I am going to set my mind and hands to making one. My idea is this:

A 45-50" tempered steel rod, 1/2 - 3/4"" in diameter with a brass or steel pommel on the handle end.

The handle will be wood with the "gladius" finger groove grip. The pommel should merge with the wood so as not to look "knobby" and the rod will pass all the way through the wood handle to maximize strength.

The tip will be rounded, not sharpened.

Add the "umbrella" part and you have a discrete, stout bludgeon or staff weapon.

The only problem so far is figuring a way to put the little spring hooks in the rod without weakening the rod.

Oh yhea, the umbrella part will be "tactical Black" of course. :neener:

Thoughts?

I think it is actually a good idea. Ive seen many umbrella swords and even some already made like you describe, have you done a search online for one? I think it would be cool to have a more compact umbrella that is also an ASP type baton.

Well, if you made it like an ASP, you could have the umbrella actuator be a set of cables that run the length of the inside of the shaft, so that when you deploy it, the cables get taut and pull the bottom collar upwards, deploying the umbrella.

The fabric part of course has to be made of a couple of layers of Kevlar.

An umbrella is already a weapon. Not modifications required.

To a point, but the only thing most are good for is a thrust with the tip or warding an attack away. Being that most are made of hollow aluminum tubing, this can be a one shot deal.

I'm thinking that if the rod is solid and strong, a thrust with the tip could be devistating and repeatable. Also, the pommel end could be used for good solid strikes. Most umbrellas I gave seen would not wok at all for this.

The fabric part of course has to be made of a couple of layers of Kevlar.

Of course! That way I can provide cover for my partner while he assembles the take down counter-sniper rifle! :D

Wouldn't you be better off duct-taping a trauma plate to your back?

We already have a superhero that does that. My trademark could be the bulletproof umbrella! :what: I will need to pick up a bowler hat to finish the ensemble though...

You aren't the first to think of this. There was a mob enforcer in Pittsburgh years ago who went by "Umbrella Jake." He used an umbella "loaded" with sheet lead as a persuader. Pretty unpleasant guy by all accounts.
