So, as the title reads, I shot my first buck yesterday at around 5:09 PM in Southern Oklahoma. He weighed out at 160 lbs undressed and was 6x5. I'm going to go with a European mount and have Skulls Unlimited out of Oklahoma City mount it. I'm pretty proud of this guy and hopefully I can get the bigger one that I was after with a bow before Jan 15th. I decided to donate the meat from this one to a family or families in the county I live in that are in need. When I fill my doe tag I will take her meat for myself. fullsizeoutput_3ea.jpeg

Good looking deer, and a good thing your doing by donating the meat. Does OK have a program where the processing is paid for, or do you have to pay for processing and then donate it?

Congratulations on your first buck. Just a suggestion. Even though you are donating the meat to some needy families, if it were I, I'd cut off a nice venison steak from the backstrap and cook it. A small celebratory gesture, so to speak. After all, it is your first buck. :D

The processing and meat are both bought by people in this area, so I had to pay literally nothing to the butcher.

Thank you everybody for the congratulations! I can't wait to get a bow so that I can step it up a notch and try my hand at bringing them in closer for a more difficult shot.

Also, I forgot to mention that I took this guy with my SigSauer 516 Carbon TS shooting 64gr Winchester power point soft tip ammo. While he literally dropped where he stood, I was not satisfied with the accuracy of this round. It got the job done, but I'm going to look for a different round to hunt with in the future.

Nice looking first buck . Around here most would do a shoulder mount on him .

If I had killed a buck like that my first time out, I would've quit deer hunting thinking it was too easy. Fortunately, my first deer was a button buck in 1968 and after ~ 175 deer I still haven't taken one as big as yours.
Congrats!

Really good buck. I think you should have done a shoulder mount because it may be 5 years before you get another one that pretty. Young hunters always look at the antlers to decide whether to mount the deer but that deer has a really pretty cape and he would have made a great mount. The size, color and condition of the cape is at least 50 percent of what makes a good deer to put on the wall. Good job with many more hunts in the future. You're hooked for sure!

I agree, but financially it wasn't really feasible for me at this time. If I had known that I could sell his cape before I donated him I would have skinned him before taking him to the butcher. Thank goodness for healthy Oklahoma deer!

A good lookin' deer and a nice trophy ! I did a European mount for my first as well. I saw a thing that I liked for the mount that allows a normal angle...more like a deer holds his head. I think it called a Skull Hook or maybe Bone hook...not sure. It mounts to a plaque or wall and to the underside of the skull and is adjustable. Before you finish everything see if you can find it...to consider.

Good hunting and great trophy!

11 point buck first time. He's ruined!

My friends son killed his first buck in the woods behind his house in the neighborhood with a muzzleloader . This neighborhood is not rural , my neighborhood connects to it . His first buck won him first place in the youth division of Va. I was told .

The ironic thing was , his daddy just quite our hunting club the previous year . He stopped hunting there in the middle of that season after his 12 year old boy shot a little doe and a couple of people said something about him shooting such a small doe .

I think it takes a POS to ruin what should be a prideful moment in a kids life like that..
