Back in the Spring, I bought 2 pounds of IMR 4955....one of the new Enduron powders. It is said to be a close match to 4831, and that fits at least 3 calibers I'm loading for. At the time, it was available and nothing else was. But after testing some loads with it, nothing has panned out. Since then, actual 4831 has shown up and tests with it have done well. Bottom line is I've given up on the 4955, yet I've still got about 3/4 pound opened, and full pound unopened. Question is....what to do with it.

Will gun shops take it in on trade? Can they legally take it in on trade?

If not, am I relegated to working a trade with another loader? What about gun shows?

The laws in your state dealing with 1.4 will have your answer. We trade a lot of things to skirt the rules, and may be your best option. That is realistically a low volume of powder you may just put aside for another rainy day.

I don't know of any gun shop around me that will take any reloading components on trade. Most will not even take back components that are unopened and were bought by mistake. This includes bullets. Many will state this when purchasing. I would put it on here or your local buy and sell.

Figured I was stuck with it. Not ideal, but even worst loads have all gone BANG and would have killed a deer at 100 yards.....so far better than nothing.

Also a good reminder to go slow on those bulk buys until you know. Midway had an 8 pound jug of VV N560 the other day.....never used it but like the 4955.....would fit a lot of slots if it worked. But that was going to cost about $350 to find out. Good news is somebodies else snapped it all up and removed the temptation.

Yes. One of the first things I tell those new to reloading is to hold off buying anything in bulk until you know for sure it is what works for you. Folks jump on the first good deal they find on 1000 bullets or a 8# jug of powder and then realize it is not optimal for their purpose. Ain't no deal if you end up tryin' to use up those components by just making noise and throwing lead downrange.

You could try a local auction house that does estate auctions. We have one that does a gun auction every couple months. Reloading stuff is selling high right now.

Here in Texas, it's against the law to return ammunition (that actually may be a Federal thing... I don't remember, exactly.) I don't know about powder, specifically, but I would think not.

If I was an LGS, I wouldn't take powder back, either.... there is NO WAY to tell if it's truly unopened and/or been tampered with. It would be too much of a liability.

In this current day, you could likely sell or trade it locally... I've done so with powder, myself, right here off THR and another forum.

Down in Plano, there is an LGS that is selling either consignment or 'used' reloading components (bullets, brass, etc) given the current demand, so that might also be an avenue. Again, powder would be a pretty subjective thing...

FWIW, I bought some IMR4451 Enduron as an alternate to IMR4350... and I didn't care for it, either. I don't think you are alone.
