Just happend last night in my area:

Man fatally shot in Botetourt County during apparent break-in

A man was fatally shot in Botetourt County Friday night after apparently trying to break into a house, authorities said.

According to a release from Botetourt County Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle, a family living in the Nace area heard someone yelling, cursing and pounding on their house at about 10:40 p.m. A man living there called 911 and secured his family members in a locked bedroom, then loaded a double-barreled, 12-gauge shotgun.

The intruder used a wrought iron patio chair to break a glass sliding door and come into the house, and the resident shot him, the release said.

Deputies arrived as the shots were fired, Sprinkle said. The wounded man was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the dead man has not been clearly established, Sprinkle said. The sheriff’s office is not identifying the resident because the incident is still being investigated. He said there is no indication of any connection between the intruder and the man who shot him.

“It appears to be a justifiable homicide, but it is still under review pending completion of the investigation,” Botetourt County Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom said in the release.

Wow. Sounds like everything right.

Call 911, secure family in locked room, guard with shotgun.

Hats off to him...

The headline alone to this thread is a good belly-laugh and worth more consideration than the hour-long ABC presentation last night. Well done, 98C5. :)

You think ABC will run stories like this?

No, nearly every week a story or 2 like this surfaces and it's never reported in anything except the local media.

If I didn't see the links here at THR I'd never hear about 99% of them, they never get past the local TV or newspapers.

Bad for business you know, reporting good news.

I wonder what would happen if sufficient numbers of gun owners got together and BOUGHT ABC and disposed of them as a liability.

We could buy a controlling interest and then make them tell the truth, but they'd probably sue as telling the truth to them would definitely be torture.

Let me play devil's advocate and show there is always an anti spin.

A man living there called 911 and secured his family members in a locked bedroom, then loaded a double-barreled, 12-gauge shotgun.

See nobody needs an assault weapon (which I will redefine every year to include more weapon types.) Everyone would be just fine limited to single shot or double barreled shotguns, no centerfire rifles and no handguns, like in many jolly nations! (Nevermind that the intent of the 2nd is to resist well armed and organized agents of tyranny.)

This also shows that any and all storage requirements make sense. Requiring storage in locked annualy inspected government approved and inspected safes, ammo stored seperately, and even the firearm disassembled still allows it to be used for self defense. There is no reason anyone needs to store a loaded and assembled weapon. This story clearly demonstrates it is unnecessary for self-defense.

Further if the guy had invested in a more solid door instead of a gun then all the time he spent moving his family into a room would have prevented the need for anyone to be shot as they safely sat on the other side and called the police from a safe room (you know the criminal wouldn't get in, or start a fire and the family can always be relocated before the situation.)

The intruder used a wrought iron patio chair to break a glass sliding door and come into the house, and the resident shot him, the release said.
If only the resident had thought more about leaving potentialy burglar friendly items outside. He practicly invited the break in. The victim is actualy at fault.
The problem was not the criminal, but the home owner's decision not to bolt down outdoor furniture and prevent such a disaster.

Deputies arrived as the shots were fired, Sprinkle said.
Clearly an unnecessary act, the deputies had arrived and if the home owner had showed just a little less callous disregard for human life the man could have been arrested peacefuly and taken to recieve the help he needed.

but it is still under review pending completion of the investigation,”
This is not even a completed investigation and verified self defense. As a result this is not even worthy of an example, and is not a valid statistic. It is all hearsay.

Zoogster,

Glad I went back and reread your Devil's Advocate scenario, I missed the Devil's Advocate on the first read through.

Good, for a Devil's Advocate position, but CR_P overall.

wait wait wait

you mean the armed maniac (the home owner) DIDN'T kill or injure his own family?

But... this goes against everything ABC has taught me.

What kind of world do we live in when an armed maniac (homeowner) starts killing those (intruders) trying to simply redistribute and consolidate the armed maniacs worldly possessions or possibly show the armed maniacs family that they're safer under his custody (hostages) than the armed maniacs?

:(:(:(:(

Maybe someone here with good intarweb skilz can find out if Ms Sawyer has a blog and forward to her blog links and articles of good shoots by normal citizens defending themselves and family. She might get tired of hearing the truth about how guns can be so useful day after day. Couldn't hurt.
