Ok, I see a lot fo guys on here showing off their duty pieces and their ccw and I'm amazed at how little wear the firearms have. I carry every day and I have to say, I'm rough on my mouse gun... The finish is wearing fast, and I want to take care of my fullsize when it returns. Anybody got any ideas or suggestions for every day carry to protect finish? handguns I plan on carrying are 1911's, 92fs, and a pt145 millenium pro

How are you carrying it? You say "mouse gun;" are you pocket carrying? If so get a quality pocket holster. IWB and OWB holsters generally work pretty good. Your going to get some wear over time. That's just part of carrying. Kind of adds character.

Polymer guns generally hold up well. Stainless guns can be polished or touched up. Blue and nickel, are just going to show use. Personally, I like a blued gun with a little wear.

I agree with PRM. A little honestly earned holster wear adds character. If a gun is carried it's going to show some wear eventually. My everyday carry is well worn and shiny on most of the high spots and corners. It is an all steel gun and I have yet to find any rust on these spots. I'm not fanatical about cleaning it, just normal upkeep. If it gets to where I have to work hard to keep it up I'll get it refinished.

A lot of the pictures posted were taken when the handguns were new. I'm sure if a current picture was posted of those same guns after being carried for a while they would look totally different. I know my revolver does...

Holsters don't cause wear on gun finishes. Dirt and grit in the holster's lining are what wears on the gun's finish. Some lining materials used in some holsters seem to attract and hold more grit than others. A brand new soft leather lined holster will appear to be gentler to finishes but once it gets some dust and grit in it, it will. Ever notice how much grit and dust ends up on your black shoes? The guys that are showing you duty guns with the finish intact have either not been in a gritty environment or don't draw and reholster very much. You want to see worn finishes look at an IDPA or IPSC competition shooter. Keeping the inside of the holster clean (use a shop vac) will help but ultimately if it goes in and out enough times it's going to start showing wear. Don't worry about it. It is a rite of passage and says that your gun ain't no safe queen.

As others have said, use leather. My holster is far from brand new and it's still not marking up the finish.

You could get it hard chromed which doesn't wear very fast.

Overall though, for a working gun, it's a tool. Do you worry about the finish on your screwdrivers or wrenches, or do you worry about them working right? A gun that's carried daily WILL get some holster wear. That's irrelevant as long as it remains in good working order though.

As to the leather suggestion, you can use it, but I haven't noticed an appreciable difference on wear levels vs kydex. I wear leather for concealed carry because its more comfortable. I use kydex in competition because it's more secure and faster on the draw. Guns carried in both types show relatively similar wear levels.

Precisely why I buy stainless it shows no holster eear from everyday carry in a leather holster. At least the stainless ones I have don't. Of course i keep em so clean youbcould eat ooff of them and wipe em down with a silicone cloth after a day of carrying so.

The next time you're watching Guns n Ammo or one of the other similar shows that feature the Gunsite Academy, look at the finish (or lack thereof) of their handguns! Some of the 1911's are worn down to metal!

I used to find holster wear abhorrent. Now I just think it gives my carry gun character and looks kind of cool. Sort of like well trimmed beard. ;)

I do use remington dry lube on the inside of my kydex holsters, or I could just use leather holsters. Get stainless guns if it's that big of a deal. Refinishing is not that expensive either.

Leather wears the finish slower, but longer. Due to the accumulation of dirt/grit as was mentioned.

A well made kydex holster may wear the contact points faster, but if kept clean, the wear stops.

This is also finish dependent, as some finishes can take it better than others.

It's also "use" dependent. The more you use it, the more it'll wear. If you're worried about acquiring honest wear on your gun, keep it in a box and never shoot it.

One thing I find helps is treating your holster with Sno Seal. This prevents sweat and body acids from penetrating the leather, and also makes for a smoother draw. I work wax (Sno Seal) inside the holster. If a little wax gets on the gun, so much the better.
