Talk me out of a Galil

Guntech, glad to hear you got yours back and it's working fine now. I've been reluctant to send mine back until I've heard what they're doing. A hebrew marked receiver, you say?

Did they put a new bolt in it? I wonder if its up to the same quality as the IMI type (or if its soft)? I'm concerned about long term, post 2k rounds type of thing.

Anyhow, galils are freaking nice...if heavy.

CAI actually sent me an new rifle. They didn't fix my old one.

Apparently ORF has a run of Henrew marked receivers that CAI grabbed to replace unfixable guns. I am told there are about 300 so marked, with the rest of CAI's guns being plain.

Mine does have the 'new' bolt, which looks Milsurp. I have about 1500 rounds through it so far with zero jams.

I haven't done a detailed accuracy tests yet, but based on some preliminary shooting, I'd say the Golani is not quite as accurate as the typical AR-15, and far more accurate than the AK. The trigger, like most AK designs, sucks. I want to try the Red Star trigger.

Comparing to an M1A is another matter. My M1A shoots around 1 MOA reliably. But I have a highly modified 'Loaded'.

Andrewsky...

Did you ever get a Golani???? I've got the itch now that prices are down to $599 from several dealers. Should I scratch it? It would be my one and only evil rifle.

Thanks, Jason

Talk you out of it?

Ok. Galils are dumb and only dummies buy them.

Did that work? Now where is this galil for sale, I wan't to buy it.

Is the OP dead? I'm confused? Can you explain? I'm sorry if he passed.

"Thread necromancer" - one who raises a dead thread.

talk you out of buying one? buy your wife something nice. start a saving account for the kids. hoard cash while the stock market goes down the tubes. new tires for your car so you don't crash and die. give to the church or the united way. feed the homeless.

I bought 4 guns this year so far. :/

No, I didn't get one. My friend had some issues with his Galil so I got an M1A instead.

let me give it a try:

who wants a gun like that in 223? I sure as hell don't. Get a gun like a tantal or an ak or as such, that uses 7.62x39 or 5.45x39. Both are MUCH cheaper than 223. My first gun was 223, but every gun since then has been something else, because I'm not all that impressed with that cartridge.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the boards, but want to comment about the Galil.

I am originally from South Africa and used the South African version of the Galil called the R-4. It is identical to the Galil, except that the stock is longer and comes with a bi-pod, which incorporates a wirecutter.

The design of the weapon is based on the AK-47 and is very reliable and is able to fire in very rugged, dirty conditions as it is able to clear dirt and grit out of the receiver.

"thebaldguy:" the .223 round is the same as the 5.56mm

On a side note: this is probably a good time to get an assault style rifle before we are subjected to another assault rifle ban!!

Bye for now,
Rev G

"the .223 round is the same as the 5.56mm"

Actually they're not the same. One is made to SAAMI specs (.223), and the other (5.56 aka 5.56 NATO) to slightly different military specs (there's actually more than one, to make life even a little more complicated).

A 5.56 NATO chambered weapon will fire .223 rem fine, but one chambered for .223 rem could have issues with 5.56 NATO (there's a slight different in length or length tolerance, and the NATO specs are hotter and could wear out the weapons faster). :uhoh:

more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.56_NATO

BTW I have a Golani built from the Hebrew marked receiver, and haven't had too many issues with it (save for ammo feeding issues with some imported ammo made to milspec, hence my knowledge of the above info :banghead:

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm new to black rifles, so please bear with me. J&G Sales has Golani rifles for $600. They come with 1 35 round mag. $30 extra gets you a bayonette lug. Apparently they're milsurp. Is this any kind of deal, good, bad, indifferent? How does it compare to the OP's item? I've never dealt with J&G, but they advertise what seems like good stuff.

capttom, they're not milspec, but remanufactured from cut up military rifles and roulette receivers.

I bought one about 6 months ago it has a serial # just above the recall number. A local shop had about 10 of them on display and I picked mine out from them. I did not do my homework before buying and if I did I may have passed on the Golani. Luckily mine has worked perfect since day one:D
I deserve a bit of luck now and then!
