Title says it all. He's set on an Enfield Jungle Carbine for a fun gun. Thing is, I think he'd enjoy a Mosin Nagant M44 a lot better. The gun is half the cost, and so is the ammo. Also I know a decent bit about M44's but nothing about the Enfield Jungle Carbines. Are they even any good? Should I keep trying to talk him out of it or just let him get what he wants?

The only major thing I can think of is that the M44's ammo will be cheaper and easier to find (Mil Surp that is)....if that's not a concern to him, let him get what he wants. It's a gun for FUN, that means he should enjoy picking it out too :p

Well, mention the wandering zero problem that those "jungle" carbines have, it soposedly has to do with the amount of metal removed from the front of the reciever and the barrel letting the barrel flex when it gets hot. Try to get that SVT, the price isn't EVER going to go down.

If you can't find a SVT, then get a Finn, spend the money to get a good quality Finn and he will never look back. Oh and a recoil pad :)

I agree with Snowdog. The man has decided what he wants.

You could buy an M44 the same time he buys his Enfield. Then you could each have fun with both.

Depending on your Dad's age and mindset, he may prefer an English made rifle to a communist design. My Pop certainly fell into that group of folks. Actually, so do I.

It's his gun
Shut up!!

Absolutely. Don't get up in the man's business, is what I say; he's a grown man and knows what he wants. There are precious few historical guns so troublesome I'd try to talk someone out of one that they had their heart set on it, and the Enfield isn't even close to one of them.

I agree, leave your Dad be and let him buy what he likes. I can imagine what my father (71 and retired military) would tell me if I got on him about a gun he wanted to get because I didn't like it. The conversation would be brief and I'd end up helping him find a nice Enfield.

you can always introduce the idea of the m44, incase he is not aware of them. but i wouldn't force it :neener:

the jungle carbines with still be fun as well, and you possibly could still find some surplus ammo at a gun show, or private sale for a decent price. :D

You might want to do a little research on the jungle carbine to be able to tell the real ones from the fakes. A fair number of the full-size rifles were converted after the war by american companies into jungle carbine lookalikes. The markings on the receiver are different.

The Enfields are great guns. The bolt is easier to operate than the Mosin-Nagant, and the Enfield has twice the magazine capacity. For a fun gun, the Enfield is probably a more pleasant gun to operate. The Mosin's main advantage is price. I own two Mosins, but would love to have a jungle carbine.

My opinion is that if he wants an Enfield jungle carbine, he wants an Enfield jungle carbine, not just any WW2-era bolt-action from any country. I say let him get what he wants (and I second the suggestion that you buy an M44 at the same time so you can shoot them together).

It's his money...
And from my experience with Mosins and Enfields, I think the Enfield design is vastly superior. Of the two, even with the costs associated with buying an Enfield and keeping it fed, I would still much prefer the Enfield.
Also, if he wants a shooter, look for one of the knock-off Jungle Carbines instead. It's just gonna get shot anyway and IIRC, the lightening cuts on the recievers of original jungle carbines were to blame for the wandering zero. "Replicas" made from full sized rifles don't have the lightening cuts so they shouldn't have that problem.

how much is an SVT in decent to good condition going for nowadays? where do you begin looking for one?

The mosin is cheap and er cheap it goes bang and is better than nothing.
The jungle carbine was the last development of a general issue bolt action rifle. It was actually popular when issued. Thats why they cost more they are a much better rifle

Go for the Enfield. But, understand that I am very biased. I have 2 #5's and would never let them go. Nothing against the M44 though. I just like the Enfields better myself.

The wandering zero is more of a myth to push for cash for a semi auto rifle.

Well, that 'myth' made my JC so unshootable that I wound up hacksawing it into 3 pieces and pitching it into the garbage! My Mosin-Nagants have always shot consistently.

Clipper: You said it, your JC. Not a real life No. 5. It might have looked like one, but I suspect it was not up to the same standards as a British No. 5.

My No. 5 shoots just as well as my No. 4s and No. 1 MKIII's.

As for which to get: His gun, his money. My dad doesn't tell me what to buy and I don't tell him. I might say "This is a little nicer, this has a better price" etc, but other than that, to each is own.
