Talk My Dad Out?

I would never take an M44 over a No5 Enfield. The Enfield just does everything better - better sights, much smoother bolt operation, bigger magazine, you name it.

shadow is right here; wandering zero, from too much metal taken out of the receiver. Get a Mosin. But get a m38, not a 44. 38's are getting hard to find, but the are super awesome; same as the 44, but no pig sticker on the end.
therefore more accurate, as you do not have a lead weight hanging onto your bbl, and the 762.54 round, in the 205 weight, has excellent accuracy, and he wil be able to bring down anything he wants, with that bullet. Plus it will be 7 to 9 dollars a box, for new made stuff, wolf, brown bear, silver bear.

You buy him the MN 44.Let him buy the jungle carbine.By the way,I almost
bought one of those in .45-70.Just enjoy and get him out there shooting.I
did with my dad sometime before he passed on.I will always remember him lighting up while shooting the 300 yd. targets with my heavy barreled .308.

All good fun and excellent memories.

THERE...IS...NO...WANDERING...ZERO.

Man. I swear. If it had one, why would I use it a military surplus 3 position shoot at a local range? And, also, one of the best guys there rotates between an 03A3, M1, M1 Carbine, K31, and, you guessed it, a No. 5. Also, I have a friend that has a No. 5 that has been used since his Grandfather as a deer rifle. Its scoped and performs as well as anything else.

I now lay down a standing offer to anyone that wants to come to my range and shoot my No. 5. Bring the ammo and have at it. I would not suggest the 180 grain Remington Core-Lokts, because thats just self abuse. Also, POF surplus tends to suck.

oaksalad: Good idea with buying the M44 as a gift. That might actually be the way to go.

Fox, just because you have one that shoots doesn't make me a liar, or the rifle I had a fake. I had that rifle authenticated before I bought it (1980). It was just a POS, and I have recommended against having one ever since. Glad yours worked out for you, but give me a M-N any day...

I've got both

Heck, don't be a cheapskate. You can still pick up really cheap M-44s. Buy him one for Christmas and let him buy the Enfield.

The M44 is fun, a blast (literally) to shoot, with cheap ammo.

I got a No. 5 Enfield years ago (1965 in an hardware store in Iowa for $30. - he had a barrel of them in back) and when a bunch of us go shooting at a local range, it's always a crowd favorite. I think its a combination of that super slick and fast Enfield action, the micrometer sight and that original "tacticool" cone shaped flash hider.

As for the wandering zero, most of us are never going to try and shoot the "mad minute" or get the barrel nearly hot enough for it to matter.

.303 is harder to find than 7.64 x 54R but with reloading it's not that big of an issue.

The again, I've never had to carry a rubber mallet to the range to use on the bolt on the Enfield to get a cartridge out - the way I have numerous times on the M-44.

Remember when you were A teenager and did not listen to your Dad? Why should he listen to you now?
Of the two I would much prefer the Jungle Carbine.

I didnt' have a mallet with me when I took my M44 to the range...so I used a rock instead. And the rock broke before the bolt opened. :uhoh:

#5mk1's are as accurate as you can shoot it. 100 yards from the bench with sand bags, 8/45 Fazakerley.
