For some reason I just got the urge to paint my Glock 17 frame desert tan. What kind of paint would work best? What potential problems could i run into? What is the best way to go about painting a frame like this?

thanks

Probably, but I already have a standard black Gen III G17. Im probably going to get a G23 for carrying pretty soon too.

You're probably going to have to blast the finish down to bare metal and use a "spray & bake" finish like duracote or gunkote. Or you could pay a pro.

ping - thanks, that cracked me up.

Is there anything besides duracote that i can use?

You can also use Krylon Fusion. They have a camo line that has a good flat tan color in it. It is all in the prep. I have seen it fail, and I have seen it work great on polymer frames.

I've done a buddy's G34 in Woodland tan. We used Duracoat, and it does NOT require baking, blasting, or any "wierd" prep steps.

For the frame, disassemble and thoroughly clean using non-residual brake cleaner. Wipe it down with 90% isopropyl alcohol and let dry. Apply any mask at this time and limit handling.

The slide--same steps, but once done, I'd throw it in an oven set at 170 degrees for about 15 minutes. This will eek the oil out of the parkerizing. Duracoat will go directly over the parkerizing of the GLOCK slide with no other prep.

Once coated, you can put it back in the oven (110 degrees for 15 minutes) to accelerate the cure, or you can set it out and let it cure for 3 weeks without the oven.

You'll be stunned at the results. It's very thin--all factory marks are crisp and readable. It's durable. We did Jim's GLOCK 34 a year ago, and after running 2 USPSA and 2 IDPA matches a month, there is not 1 shred of holster wear.

I'd post pics if I knew how! <g>
