I was just wondering if anyone off hand knew what size taps were used to thread 12 and 20 ga shotgun barrels for screw-in chokes. I realize that there are different sizes used according to the wall thickness of the barrel. I checked the barrel of the 12 ga. I'd like to install chokes in and the O.D is .855 and the I.D is .728. I have access to a metal lathe and a large collection of taps and was wondering if one of the taps in my collection would be suitable.

Thanks

I would assume they are special sizes.Putting in chokes, if the barrel is suitable, should be left tothose with experience like Briley.

I'm no gunsmith, but I've had chokes installed in several shotguns by a local gunsmith (who installs Hastings chokes). His taps for the job were all special-purpose ones, because the thread on the chokes was rather different from the standard taps. Don't know if this helps...

Thanks all for answers, I was able to locate reamers and taps for doing chokes at Brownell's . Unfortunately it would cost as much as a new shotgun ($300+) to purchase the tooling. The companies recommended probably do an excellent job,but their price exceeds that of a new barrel, it seems an economic catch-22. I suppose if I owned a high-dollar shotgun or was a involved in competition it would be a more reasonable expenditure. For now I will make do with what I have.
