Tapco Retaining Plate

There's no functional benefit other than they are a bit easier to reinstall than the wire spring. I've used both types and have no preference; it will only come into play if you're removing the trigger group.

With some guns you will need to slightly modify the safety lever for the Tapco retainer to fit properly.

Tapco had some promotion when I bought my G2 group and gave me the retaining plate for free. It made the installation of the pins much easier once all was said and done in my RPK. If you plan on putting a new trigger group in this is definately worth it so you don't have to mess with that wire.

I ordered one when I built my AK-12, but it was backordered and the company that I ordered it from (Mississippi Auto Arms, whose service disgusts me) cancelled that part of my order (without consulting or notifying me), so I never received it. I considered the "shepherds crook" (which seem to work fine), but I was halfway through the build and I would have to wait for delivery, so I decided to come up with my own solution with what I had at hand. I ended up using a couple E-clips (0.25" IIRC, pictured below), which work fine, but would be a PITA to remove (something that you probably won't ever need to do).

I've had e-clips work off while firing, with 'interesting' results. I would suggest that you not use them.

Thanks for the heads-up, but please tell me more, mine have endured hundreds of 12Ga. rounds, without any trouble.

:)

Installed e-clips from Ace Hardware. I had taken a axis pin in with me to fit it and had a good fit to the groove of the pin.

Mine lasted while I was practicing but came loose during a rifle match, naturally. The trigger pin worked loose and jammed the rifle resulting in a DNF for that stage. I've used both the wire retainers and plates without any problems. BSW

Wire is just as functional as a plate, but the plate is easier to install if you're going to be removing the trigger group often. I like to remove my trigger group and blast the inside of the gun and pieces with brake cleaner, wipe dry and then blast with break free CLP and reassemble. the plate is invaluable to someone like me as the wire can be a pain to install sometimes!

That little shepherds hook seems to be the bane of AK owners across the western world. :)

Funny thing is, its so simple, its amazing it causes so much trouble. All you do, is push down on it, just ahead of the pin and out of the retaining notch on the pin, and pop the pin out. Just reverse it to get t back in.

I recently tried to put one of those you linked to on a Saiga 308 It would not work and had to be relieved to fit. My recomendation is to go with the old style Tapco retaining plate not this new one. I have the old one in several rifles and it has never given me any trouble.

briansmithwins, thank you for the additional information. Since it didn't cause any major issue (like damage to the firearm), and I don't see how it could, I think I will leave it alone at least for now, though I can see your distaste for the clips given your particular situation (mine were just ones that I had laying around in the shop, origin unknown...perhaps better quality?).

:)
