I got a Tasco Red Dot from a friend, and have a problem with it. Between us we've mounted it on a .30 carbine, a .357 Rossi pistol, and a pellet gun. In each case, we shot tighter groups with the iron sights the guns came with. This suggests to me that something is adrift within the red dot. Anyone else have a problem like this?

Depends on the dot size of the model you have. Mine has a 5MOA dot, so at 100 yards, around a 5" group is the best I can expect under perfect conditions. If your groups are significantly larger than the MOA of the dot, then perhaps the scope has failed.

Inexpensive red dots are very prone to parallax issues, due to the design of their optical system. Adjust your eye position to keep the red dot perfectly centered in the tube when shooting, and as consistent as possible from shot to shot, and see if that helps any. The difference in point of impact between the center and the edge of a 42mm red dot tube can be two or three inches at 50 yards, IIRC.

If consistent eye position doesn't help, the problem may be that the sight just isn't holding zero, or has something loose inside.
