Red dot for 10/22 around $50

So I got a Ruger 10/22 this summer and really like it. I'd like to put a red dot on it that's not going to cost a bunch (~$50). I was in Meijer (Wal-mart, target kinda place) today and saw a Tasco red dot with a 30mm lens and 5MOA dot. It was listed at $40, but I was recently given a $25 gift card there, so we'll call it $15. I'm reading the Dick's SG flyer right now and see a similar sight made by TruGlo on sale for $30. Are these two sites different really? What are your experiences/opinions on the Tasco as that's the one I'll probably be getting? Thanks.
 
I have a $30 leapers/nc star from midwayusa and it works good. Im sure its about the same quality as the tasco.
 
I looked at the ncstar stuff online and there were many negative reviews about not holding zero... dunno if that's typical.

It's typical in that if you focus on the dot instead of the target when using a red dot you will get poor results and it'll be easy to blame "cheap red dot don't hold zero". You have to focus on the target and look through the dot. That said, NcStar stuff is hit and miss so I'd only buy it from a place that will take it back if what you get is crap.

I've had very good results with the cheap tube type red dot sights, in fact the only one that failed was a BEC that came apart internally. But I've had universally poor results with the cheap reflex type red dots.

I've got that Walmart Tasco red dot on one of my 10/22s and its been great fun for many years.
 
What type of shooting are you going to enjoy with that setup?

A 5MOA dot subtends 5"@100yds., hardly conductive to precise shooting.

plinking rapidly with even a 5MOA dot is alot of fun... im pretty sure thats the idea given the gun its going on is a 10/22
 
It's a little more than $50 but look at the Primary Arms red dots. I've had on eon the Uzi and AK, and some of my shooting buddies have had them on AK rifles for near 1k rounds w/o problems.

I had a problem with the mount on mine loosening up. They had the replacement part in my hands 2 days after I called them.

I've put the cheap truglo on 2 AR's and an sks without issue. My brother has the tasco red dot on a 10/22 and the dot drifts occasionally and needs adjustment. My current truglo "red dot" is more of an irregular red blob with fuzzy edges. maybe 6MOA. And the flip up lens covers are junk.

Academy occasionally runs a millet multidot for around 50 bucks that is so much better it's not even funny.
 
That Tasco is a solid red dot for a rimfire. Millett also makes a quality red dot in their SP1 and SP2 models. They're just a bit more than $50.

At closer ranges, yes, a red dot would be fun, but at 100yds., the 5" dot would cover any plinking target I've used, let alone a precision target.

in my experience cheap ammo's not accurate at 100 yds anyway. I was shooting federal bulk ammo through my 10/22 a few years back with a 9x scope and getting about 14" 10 shot groups. now it was a little windy. I gave up on the high power scope and long range 22's pretty quick.
 
considering that most red dots are designed for fast up close stuff 100yd precision shooting is asking way too much of any of them short of a high end model such as an aimpoint or eotech (and even thats a stretch given the average target is centermass for those sights)

a red dot is made for speed not pinpoint accuracy so even at 100 yards plinking shouldnt be an issue for a normal sized target
 
I don't know how old you are or whether you ever shot an open class handgun matches, but there was a time, long ago, when having a Tasco Pro Point on top of your super was the way to go. These Tascos survived thousands upond thousands of rounds. This was at a time when the power factor (bulletweight X velocity/ 1000) to make major was 170, rather than the 165 it is now. A .38 super loaded to a 170 power factor will pound the heck out of a scope. I'd go with the Tasco.

As far as the size of the dot goes, I really don't see why everyone makes such a big deal of it. I zero at 100 yards (or 50 yards in the case of a .22) using the very top of the dot. At 25, the center should be close to being right on. You can get pretty precise doing this, provided that your eyes are up to the task. I can't see crap unless it's the size of a quart sized oil can at 50 yards.
 
Bought the Tasco today. Mounted it and it looks great, sight picture was good. I'll sight it in this weekend and report back.
 
Don't bother with the CenterPoint!!!

IMO & experience ANY of the CenterPoint stuff is JUNK!! Two red-dot scopes & a bore site. The "Dot" is more of a fuzzy star & the the laser bore site is made of plastic & isn't straight. You don't get an acturate bore everytime cause it "Wabbles". If I were you, go Tasco for a cheap scope or have fun shooting irons & save some more for a nicer high end.
 
Shop around and get the smallest red dot reticle available. The smallest I've seen on most is 3 MOA. I use a Eotech on my Mini14 Tactical .223 and a Bushnell Holosight(C ivilian Eotech) on a Ket-Tec SU-16C .223. The reticle is a 1 MOA dot in a 65 MOA Circle, which gives it some "in reticle ranging ability" on human targets. Learning your gun equates to "deer ranging" ability-3 in the freezer! I have a Ruger 10-22 in a Hogue Overmould Rubber stock and a Green Mountain .920 heavy barrel. It has a Tasco Pro-Point so old I have to go Speciallty Battery places or order from RAdio Shack. THey look like 2-3 batts in one case. Don't know the MOA size, but it shoots .50 MOA 10-shot groups all day long with Fed 550 rds Bulk 22 LR ammo. BYW, a box of $5+ Target ammo shot pooer groups-It's the gun's choice, I have access to 10K+ rds of multiple brand 22Lr, what can I say? To: Greyling22- I had the same issue with my 10-22. I left it with a family member for years, it was neglected. Got it back, took it apart to clen it. Once back together it wouldn't hit a cow @ 25 yds let alone a squirrel! When you take the barrel off the action you must pay very close attention to remounting it evenly. I found mine was not right, I redid it, taking care to insure the action>dovetail fit was even and tight and with the OEM barrel I was back to 1"-1.5 groups. The .920 HB upgrade from WWW.Cheaperthandirt.com carefully seated as mentioned put my groups of5 shots in .5 " with the old Red Dot Tasco.
 
Shot with the Tasco on my 10/22 yesterday. It was a lot of fun! I didn't really sight it in because it was windy/raining/sleeting/cold out on the uncovered range. It was shooting pretty close anyhow. Also, I was using setting 6 and it worked fine. Thanks for the help.
