Crane Standoff Over
ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities say a homicide suspect who spent 56 hours perched on an 18-story construction crane was in custody early today after police climbed the structure and used a Taser gun
to arrest him.
Atlanta Assistant Police Chief Alan Dreher said later that police got him in a position to "effectively use the Taser." The man, identified as Carl Edward Roland, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, and police expect to charge him with crimes in Atlanta in addition to homicide charges in Florida.
Atlanta police Sergeant John Quigley said the 41-year-old man got onto the crane around 5 p-m Wednesday and told police he was thinking of killing himself by jumping.
Roland is wanted by the Pinellas County, Florida, sheriff's
department in the death of ex-girlfriend 36-year-old Jennifer L- Gonzalez, whose body was found Tuesday.
An arrest warrant affidavit accuses Roland of strangling Gonzalez and dumping her body in a pond behind the apartment complex where she lived.
