Does anyone own a Taurus 1911? Have you had good experiences with it or has it been a problem? I'm thinking of buying a 1911SS but can't get past the bad reviews.

I have the blued PT1911. I don't doubt that SOME people have had issues, not unlike any other gun, but I think the majority of the noise is due to 2 things. First, those that are unhappy tend to make quite a bit more noise that those that are perfectly content. Secondly, I am convinced that many folks are just brand snobs and hate on the PT1911 because of the fact that it runs as well and has all of the features as thier $1k+ "name" gun.
My PT1911 has been utterly flawless. Not a hiccup, stutter, pause or hesitation. Absolutely perfect.

Mine too. I'll add that as my CCW piece, favorite range pistol, and my match gun, it often goes 300 or more rounds between cleanings.

I'm considering a stainless if and when Taurus offers it in commander version and preferably with single side safety...
I have a blued PT1911 that has run flawlessly since i got it over a year ago. It has fed anything I give it and has never malfunctioned. Mine shoots 2-3 inches at 25 yards which is more accuracy tahn you need for a target gun.
I want to get a stainless too but I'm only waiting for some of the other models to come out (compact, light rail, etc).

+1 for me as well, my PT1911 is a sweet shooter. No complaints at all.

I had a great experience with my blue model so far. The sight lock screws initially turned out to be slightly loose, but they tightened up with the proper allen wrenches and the gun has been flawless since. I saw a couple of the SS models at the gun show last week and it was hard to pass them by, especially since they were selling at barely over half of what the Kimbers they were next to were priced at!
I'm quite fond of my blued PT - shouldn't expect much difference in the stainless.
I am amazed at how much the price went up. I got one the first ones off the boat and dropped all of $425 on it. I have also noticed that quality seems to have dropped a little bit since the first run, mainly in the area of internals (feed ramp, trigger etc).
Mine has never failed, is accurate and runs like Gump.
I have done everything I can to make it fail and it won't. One thing I did early on was run some old Silver Bear JHP crap (100 rounds of it) that had a thin layer of rust on the cartridges - the only thing that happened was I tore the heart out of a bullseye.
Only problems I had with mine was slightly out of spec grip screws (heads too big) and my weak side safety lever was slightly lower than standard so I had to remove a little off the aluma-grips I installed and replace the screws. My friend had neither of these problems and his came from the second batch that came in.

I recently picked up a railed version; the PT1911 AR (blued).
After putting 300 rounds through it, my impressions:
Good: It shoots sweet. The initially gritty trigger cleaned up nicely and it hit exactly to point of aim. Not a single failure to feed or extract. This thing made me look good. The Heine sights are great, but tritium inserts would have been even better.
Bad: First, a couple minor things: the grip screws have oversized heads and the grip panels are horrible, so for the inevitable replacement you'll want different screws too. Then, the big bad thing: I was getting frequent light primer strikes. As in every other round early on, and as it broke in, it dropped off but was still going on (tried multiple kinds of ammo). It's probably something in the series 80 safety that is out of adjustment. The shop is having a smith look at it, and I expect to get it back in great condition, but I have to admit that this is not making me look kindly upon the series 80 FPS. While I won't give up this gun for having it, I doubt I'll be buying another 1911 with it.

Good: Extremely accurate, felt great in my hand. Ate my 230gr RN lead reloads just fine.
Bad: does NOT like the federal 230gr HST +p jhp's at all. Tried 2 mags of it, and had repeated jams and failure to feeds.
I'm going to shoot the gun a whole lot more, then try the HST's again.

Bought a blue 1911 a couple of months ago. It has been back at Taurus for several weeks now. It shot fine, fed, fired, ejected perfectly even with the safety on. I'm sure it will come back to me, some day. When it does it is for sale, cheap! I bought a Rock Island 1911 tactical. It is the one I should have bought in the first place. :banghead:

I have been very happy with mine. Zero problems. But in all fairness, still under 1K rounds through it.

Marty, why didn't you just swap out the safety? A decent smith could have done it for about what you have in shipping if you didn't want to do it yourself.
I'm not a Taurus fan, (or a 1911 fan) but I figured since it's a 1911 I would just upgrade any weak parts that may fail down the road. All reports seems to indicate that std 1911 parts fit the gun fine.

Thought about replacing the safety even before the discovery that it only locked the slide and didn't stop the sear or hammer. I'm not partial to ambi safeties on a carry piece. After the discovery I did a bit of measuring and found the geometry of the hole in the frame was off by nearly fifty thousandths of an inch and that seems to be the reason it fires with the safety on. I decided to let the maker worry about figuring out what to do with it.

Well, it's just one data point, but here goes:
So far (250 rds) my blue PT1911 has functioned perfectly, and today I put 46/50 in the 10 ring of a B8 target from 10 yards - the X was entirely blown out. (FWIW, the "fliers" were 3 9s and an 8.) That would not be a big deal for lots of you, I'm sure, but it's the only pistol I have tried that *I* can do that with... including the Springfield V10 and Colt Gov't Model 70 I also fired today.
The trigger pull is 4# 4oz +/- 2oz, which has a lot to do with it, I'm sure.
On the down side, the comments about the blue wearing off unreasonably quickly do seem to have some merit. At some point I may need to have this one refinished, but for the price and quality of this specific pistol, I won't mind too much. Also, I replaced the grip panels, as the stock ones were uncomfortable.
My $0.02 is that I wouldn't buy a Taurus (or any 1911) mail order - check the actual sale item for function, fit, & finish. As always, YMMV.

My brother an I both have the stainless and the blue. No problems with either and over 1K through the blue ones only about 500 through the ss but they are going strong. Always a good idea to check out any new gun before purchase as a booger can get by any manufacture occassionaly.

+1 for the pt1911. I have had no problems with mine but I still have less than 1000 round through it. I'm going with if it does break I will just upgrade it with better parts.
