So I bought a copy of the '2006 Complete Book of Autopistols' last night. In there was an article about the 24/7 Compact vs. the full-size 24/7. I went to the Taurus website but could find no listing yet for the 24/7 Compact. So what exactly is the difference between the 24/7 compact and the Millennium Pro 745? They are both single-stack .45s on what looks to be the same frame. Is there really a difference between them? According to the article, both are DAO.

I have been shopping the 24/7 .45ACP so I will try to answer.

The new 24/7 Pro is SA/DA. It does have second strike capability, but normally fires with striker already retracted....similiar to XD.

The PT745 Pro is still DAO to my knowledge. Must use full trigger pull like revolver.

There are differences in the internals, but I am not expert enough to describe. They really are different pistols. There is no 24/7 compact.

I like the 24/7 Pro much better for trigger. I have learned that you can carry larger pistols with proper holster as well as small.....so I go with the 24/7.

The 745 is DAO only, yes, plus it has a mechanical safety. Not a good shooting-practice gun, but excellent for concealed carry, because it won't fire unless you pull the trigger allllll the way back, and you can have the safety on, too. It's one you can carry IWB with less fear that you could destroy your ability to reproduce. :D

There is no 24/7 compact.

Hmm, well according to the article in this magazine, which is on newstands now, there is a 24/7 compact. And both it and the 745 are DAO. So again I wonder what the difference is. I recall earlier threads in which a couple of people examined stripped 24/7 and Millennium Pros, and reported that the innards appeared virtually identical except for size.

Not sure either. But that is curious. Also, only the older 24/7 is DAO (to my knowledge) the new 24/7 Pro is SA/DA. I have shot the 745, but only dry fired the 24/7. But to me they are different guns. I am going to look at the Taurus site again...maybe a new model I am not aware of.

Also, good point someone else made about safety. There is a difference in the XD and Taurus. The XD has grip safety (what I call passive) that is activated by just gripping. The Taurus has a full mechanical safety. You push it down to fire...up for safe....similiar to 1911. I feel OK with my XD safety and 1911 safety....so OK with both.

Maybe this answers some things. On the Taurus site they show a new long slide. Now it does not say the words compact for the non-long slide. But maybe that is what is being call compact....not sure.

One thing. I don't see how the SA/DA insides are exactly the same as the 745 that is DOA..since different actions.

Manedwolf, I am over 65 so not worried about reproduction anymore. I can carry old single action with pin on primer....no worries...well except for my toes!

As far as I know they are all 24/7 Pro SA/DA now. But I am sure there are still some new DAO left in stores. For me, I would not consider the DAO after you use the SA/DA. The new action is more like XD/Glock.

Not saying the 745 is not good for close work and fast shooting. But at any distance the SA is better. Like most here I shoot a lot, and the only time in recent years I could not hit a target reasonably well was with a 745. I was forced to shoot 25 yards because range would not allow closer.

Unfortunately, it seems Taurus hasn't updated their site for 2006 yet so you won't find the 24/7 Compact there.

The 745 is still the DAO Milennium Pro series, only it is the single stack version. The PT145 is the double stack version.

The old 24/7s were basically full-size versions of the Milennium Pros. For whatever reason Taurus decided to discontinue the DAO 24/7s and replace them with a SA/DA (SA but with a DA double strike potential on a bad primer) 24/7 Pro. Apparently, they are coming out (or have come out) with a compact Milennium Pro sized version of the 24/7 Pro. So, the 24/7 Pro should be double stack like the PT111/140/145 and proportioned similarly. It will have the SA/DA trigger like the 24/7 Pro. So basically, it will be a SA/DA version of the Milennium Pro for people who don't like that gun's long DAO trigger. I haven't heard of the 24/7 Compact coming in a single stack version like the PT745 though.

I am still hoping that Taurus comes out with a single-stack version of the 9 mm Millennium Pro. I have a Pro PT-111 stainless that I am fond of. I think a single stack, to compete with Kahr, would be quite interesting. If it was in titanium, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Yes, there are a couple of compact 24/7s coming out, there were photos taken at the SHOT show this year and here are a couple more I found yesterday.

Ane one listed as 17 rd in 9mm

As you can see it is now a real 24/7 pro in compact form and not a Mil Pro, looks very nice and I will likly get a 10rd version in 9mm unless 40 or 45 holds close to 10 also. Not sure when these will offically be out though.

I called Taurus Tech support and sales. BOTH confirmed there IS a Taurus 24/7 .45 cal. compact. It has a 12 round magazine (2) height is 5.5" and length is 6.38". It is for sale now. Apparently the web site needs a new admin. Heck, even the Millenium Pros all lack the rail!

There are a few mistakes in this thread.

The 24/7 Pro is SA/DA and holds 10+1 or 12+1 rounds of .45 ACP.

The PT745 is DAO and holds 6+1 rounds of .45 ACP.

The PT145 is a DA/SA pistol which holds 10+1 rounds of .45 ACP.

The first 2 pistols are the ones you asked about. I don't know why you asked about those 2 only since the the PT145 is much more like the 24/7 than the PT745 is. Both the PT745 and PT145 are the same size and weight so it's only the features which make them different. With the PT145 you get 4 more rounds without having to carry a larger package. I'm not trying to go OT by adding a different pistol to the mix but was curious as to why you left it out. (and others have already mentioned it too)

I have a PT145 Mil Pro manufactured in January of 2007...bought it in March of 2007. I have several hundred (400-500) rnds through it with out a single malfunction.

Heck, even the Millenium Pros all lack the rail!

I beg to differ...mine does have a rail! I think older manufacturing runs did not have a rail.

The PT145 Mil Pro is DAO. Great for concealed carry. Not the best for the range.

I must also differ on this...my pt145 mil pro is sa/da with the same interal mechanics as the 24/7. Again...this might be because of how recently mine was manufactured. Also...my 13 yr old son puts 100 down range in the mil pro before his wrist begins to hurt...I have never had issues with my wrist at all when shooting for long periods...but then agian I don't do a lot of +p.

Tx_Jim,
The PT145 was always a DA/SA pistol, the above posts were incorrect. The PT745 is a fairly new release and is DAO.

Buds has the compact 24/7. It has a 3.3" barrel.

9mm for $354.79 blued, $365.43 stainless - 17+1

40S&W for $354.79 blued, $365.43 stainless - 15+1

no .45's listed.

it looks like this (9mm)

I'll throw my hat in the ring here, having owned several Milleniums and Mil Pro's.

All newly manufactured Millenium Pro's (after June-July '06 or thereabouts) including the PT-145s and PT-745s are SA/DA (once the slide has been racked it is SA, otherwise DA). All previous Millenium Pro's and the older Millenium's were DAO.

They will say Millenium on the left side of the frame and will say PT-145 Pro, or PT-745 Pro, or PT-111 Pro, etc. on the right side.

I compared a new SA/DA PT-745 to my older DAO PT-745 and although the SA trigger is very nice, I was shooting essentially the same at 7yds with either, no better, no worse with the SA/DA trigger, at least in my hands.

A detailed description of Millenium generations can be found here:

The actual owners here at this forum know of what they speak. This has to do with 24/7 compacts or the 745.

At the Taurus Armed.net there are many old and new threads on the compact guns, as well as a inhouse factory rep, who just joined recently at that forum.
