Which one to buy for ccw. The 44 has a 3in barrel. Both are new. This will be a primary carry weapon. Either one will be used with an OWB holster. The 44 will be loaded with Blazer Gold Dots 200 grain. The Shield will be loaded with HST 124 standard pressure rounds.

Which one to choose?

One is a whole lot bigger than the other. You gonna open carry?

How is a 431 new??

If it's your only handgun then the .44 special wins hands down since it's able to handle more scenarios, everything from hunting and woods protection to urban defense.... I have both a 329 nightguard with a 2.75" barrel and a 9mm shield. When I carry the nightguard there isn't really much a 200gr swc moving at 1000fps can't handle..

Which do you shoot better?

You state that you will be carrying OWB. I find it curious that your two finalists are two so very different handguns.

If you are able/willing to carry a 3" steel 431, and you are considering a 9mm as the other option, you could just as easily carry any number of high-cap 9mms.

I would go with the Shield if you are pocket carrying, or maybe IWB.

I had a 431 for a while and liked it. But it is quite large and heavy considering its five-round capacity. Since I have never lived in an OC state, I carried it in a Smart Carry. It was do-able, but just barely.

So, displaying my usual Solomonic wisdom :) I offer the following:
Get one of each. It's nice to have options. And the ability to pocket carry opens up new doors. Figuratively and literally.

My choice....

A new S&W 9x19mm Shield no thumb safety format with Trijicon HD night sights(green-orange).
Id consider adding Metalife to the entire upper(barrel, slide, parts) or maybe Cerakote with the extra Armor Clear(low gloss). www.blowndeadline.net

For deep carry, Id think of Hornady Critical Duty +P 135gr, the DPX or PowRball.

I prefer to carry my .44 snub, but my smallest 9mm is much easier to conceal.

They are two totally different guns. There is really no way to fairly compare the two.

Would love to have the Taurus Model 431 as I'm a big fan of the .44 Special but between the two I would probably go with the S&W Shield. To me it has the edge in terms of capacity, faster reloads, size, and ease and comfort for concealed carry.

I'm a revolver guy so I would choose the 44 Special.

Which do you shoot better? Are you more accurate with a revolver or a semi-auto pistol? Choose the one you shoot best and the one you are most confident with.

Given my last experience with Taurus and 44, I would suggest anything else.

With that said, you are comparing apples to bazookas- and thats a hard comparison to make.

You can search it...easy to find.

Nostalgic appeal of the venerable .44 Spl is something with which I'm familiar. ;) I was an avid reloader of .44 Mag/Spl as a younger man.

That said, I haven't carried a 5-shot .44 Spl snub since I owned a pair of early production Charter Arms 3" Bulldogs many years ago. (Less-than-satisfactory experience, which is another story.)

While I wouldn't be particularly averse to having a good quality, short-barreled .44 Spl again for occasional field/backwoods carry, I'd much sooner carry one of my compact/subcompact 9's, .40's or .45's for a personal defensive role when I felt like carrying a pistol.

I much prefer to carry one of my assorted 7 S&W 5-shot snubs, but then I usually carry them in pocket holsters instead of belt-carry.

I've found it's usually easier to find some of the better modern defensive hollowpoints in 9mm than in .44 Spl, and on more store shelves.

Your call. I could see eventually owning whatever interested me in both calibers (as I have in the past).

I'm not particularly interested in own a Taurus revolver, myself.

Now, if Ruger decided to offer their SP101 in a 5-shot .44 Spl version? (Or make a thinned-out version of the chunky GP?) That might be enough inducement to make me consider indulging my nostalgic appreciation of the caliber, and add one to my collection.

I'd probably add it to my list of documented weapons with which I've qualified, too.

I'd have to live with the dearth of modern hollowpoint loads and sporadic availability, though. (Compared to the relative ease of finding 9mm defensive loads.)

Just depends what you want.

How well can you handle and shoot either choice, though?

I sold the Taurus 431. It was as new as new could be. The gun will be OWB but concealed. KS is ccw. I like the shield. Feels great. All I have read is positive. I have a 44 Special I use as a ccw. It is a Rossi 720 covert gun. I didn't need two 44's. I will rotate the Shield in with the Rossi.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Wait & see....

Id suggest you wait, then see if Glock USA brings out the new sub compact 9x19mm(9mm Luger). :D
The smart move would be to wait a few months so if the new Glock 9mm has problems or flaws, the R&D guys can resolve it.

Id heard the Glock 42 had some minor problems but newer models work very well.

You could buy the .44spl revolver now & buy the Glock single stack 9mm in 2015. ;)

44 spl. It just works. Wet, dirty, craptastic load made it to the gun, your limp writing due to injury... 44 may hold fewer but they will work when they connect. It's a no-brainer to me that you go revolver...but I work in a factory so I know that if it makes sense your supposed to run the other way.

I use the Taurus 431 and 441 for winter carry in a Bianchi 100 IWB holster.

Tuff products offers speed strips of a sort for back up ammo.

For summer carry the Taurus 709, in the Shield ballpark in size, is my summer carry. Carrying a spare magazine for it is easy. Single stacks have their place in the grand scheme of things.

Get the one that fits you and your needs the best. What fits you better?

Or get both. The .44 Special for main carry and the Shield for a backup or as part of your CCW carry rotation.

Yes, those are two different gun types but they can be integrated together or compliment each other.

431 wins in my opinion I have a 9mm but never carry it for SD Chances are If I need to defend myself or others it will be from someone either jacked up on drugs or just plane whacked out nut job .. I want the heavy knock em down slug of the 44.

Wow what a set of complete opposites you have to pick from personally if it were going to be my only CC gun and I were for sure going to carry OWB, I would go with the 9mm shield for now. And that is coming from a guy that carries a revolver 99% of the time.

The 44 would be great but you really need something that will be easy to conceal in most settings if it will be your only one. Add the. 44 later.
