Anyone out there shoot the 44 Special for ccw? I do. And I was wondering what velocity's my fellow Special shooters are getting out of there smoke wagons? I am shooting the Blazer Gold Dots in 200 grain out of a Taurus 431 with a 3in barrel and a Rossi 720 with a 3in tube.
I am getting 890 to 910 for velocity. When I load my own for target I am at the 800 to 850 range. Please share if you are a "Big Bore" 44 Special shooter :)

Wow!!!!!!!!!!
A 140 views. And 2 comments. Must not be to many 44 Special shooters out there. That is sad. The Specials just that Special. Skeeter would role in his grave I believe :)

I just got an old 3" Bulldog a few weeks ago. I did a little binge loading/shooting/chronographing when I got home with it.

I started with 5.0 gr. of HP-38 and one of my cast 260 gr. SWC's. They ran a little under 700 fps but leaded badly and some hit the target sideways. Switch to a cast RCBS 44-250KT @ 258 grs. with the same load, MUCH better. They only ran 669 fps, but were quite accurate.

Next I loaded some cast 247 gr. SWCHP's over 6.5 grs. of AL20/28. This load is my "standard" practice load for all my .44 Specials. This load averaged 835 fps and was accurate but holy sheeeit, talk about recoil!!!!! Since it weighs but 21 oz. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.

I'm trying to find some 200 +/- gr. full wadcutters to load for self defense. I'll likely run them in the 800 - 850 fps range.

I've since switched to smaller Pachmayr grips and it conceals quite well.

Over the years I have found that a 200 - 215 gr. bullet @ 850 - 900 fps. is an excellent all around problem solver. That load is pretty easy to achieve if you handload or the Speer Gold Dot 200 gr. in the Blazer line is an extremely good carry load in .44 Spl. snub. They will do about 875 fps out of most 2 1/2 and 3 in barrels and will actually open up fully at that speed. A full wadcutter is pretty amazing from a Charter Bulldog.

I, just started playing with the .44 Special.

The only load so far is:
240 Speer JHP
10 grains of Blue Dot
CCI LPP

According to the Alliant web sight it should be at 871 FPS.

I'm shooting a six inch 29.

Sorry I can't contribute but when I was looking for a big 40 I went with the 45 Colt over the 44. I'm sure the 44 is a good gun but I shoot the 45 Colt instead...

Forgot to mention....during that first session I had a handful of the Speer factory 200 gr. HP's and chronographed them @ 733 fps. I was not impressed, plus I have zero use, personally, for jacketed bullets in revolvers.

I missed out on a good deal for a new model Bisley flat top in 44sp the other day, but I made up for it with a good deal on a new model 44 mag stainless. I shoot specials through my magnums but don't have a revolver specifically chambered for the special.

When I carry my M-19 44spl.,

I load it with factory silvertips... When I run out of them, I may switch to some "other" factory defense load??

I have a Charter SS Bulldog that is a "truck gun". I load a Federal 200 grain lead SWC-HP for defense and some kind of 200 grain RNFP (Ultramax were the last ones I bought) for practice.

I use AA#7 @ 10gr. with a 200gr XTP for about 930.....that's with the 5.5 inch Blackhawk.....which I do carry about 70 percent of the time.

That's whats in my cold charter bulldog I got some silver tips. But I have never cared for silvertips . Much prefer the gold dots.

Bob Wright, from what little we can see of your sixgun it looks to be gorgeous. Got a pic of the whole thing you'd care to share?

Out of my Bulldog I use a 255 grain Keith over 7.5 grains of Universal Clays. Does about 830 fps. Kick? Sure it does, but you get what you pay for and recoil is part of the price.

44 Special is one of my favorite cartridges. I carry them a fair amount, but it has been a long time since I put any of my loads through a chronograph. Mostly I carry three to five and a half inch barrels under a jacket or a long shirt in public. Special occasions, though call for special guns(and I mean 44 not 38) such as when I took my girlfriend to see the last Indiana Jones movie. I carried a six and a half inch barrel 2nd model target hand ejector, not the most comfortable thing under the waistband on a warm summer day, but it seemed to be the thing to have on that day. the long barrel jabbed me so hard a few times when I shifted in my seat that I made a concerted effort to find another 2nd Model Hand ejector with the rare five-inch barrel.

Why, bless you Sir for asking:

It's a ex-.357 Magnum Ruger Three Screw Blackhawk converted by Dave Clements, case colored by Doug Turnbull, and walnut stocks by CaryC.

I can't believe how the marketing weenies have brainwashed so many shooters that unless their SD round is traveling the speed of light it's useless. Large and slow has worked very well for over 100 years so why reinvent everything now?

They have added a +P to everything, changed the packaging and put the words "self defense" on the box, made the boxes 20 rounds instead of 50 rounds and in the end raised the prices extremely high without actually delivering anything better than we had before.

A 405gr flat nose bullet fired from a 45-70 at only 1400 fps will go clean through a buffalo. Smaller handgun cartridges have done the same to man size targets for a very long time too so what change things now?
