I have a Taurus 85 which is my 1st revolver. I clean it after shooting as you're supposed to, but I heard it's a lot easier to clean out the cylinder if you take it off the frame. I don't see a way of doing that. Does anyone know?

It was new when I bought it. After the first trip to the range there were rings of residue towards the front of the chambers, which I can't seem to remove -- is that pretty normal?

Thanks.

Don't do it mon! You will be opening up a can of worms. If your gun is stainless and you talking about those "dirty rings" on the front of the cylinder, get a Kleen Bore lead-away cloth and rub them off. If your gun is blued, do not use this cloth, it will ruin the finish.
One of the nice things about shooting revolvers is not having to "tear it down" everytime you clean it. Just take your time. It'll all work out. ;)

Yeah exactly if I can't easily figure out how to get it off I guess it's more trouble than it's worth....I would like to know if it's possible about of curiosity.

My gun is blued. What can I use on that or are the stain rings really a problem? These aren't the ones on the front of the cylinder but inside the individual chambers.

Patrick, It is a very simple operation and even though I only remove my cylinder about every 4 or 5 hundred rounds, it is something you need to know and be comfortable with.

Make sure your Taurus is unloaded. With the proper sized scredriver, remove the screw on the right side just forward and above the trigger guard. Open the cylinder and slide it forward and out. It is that simple.

As far as cleaning inside the cylinder holes, try a good bore cleaner and give it time to work and scrub it with a good bore brush. For carbon and lead build up buy a pure copper Chore Boy scrub pad at the grocery store. Pull off a long strand and wrap it around a new bore brush and scrub the bore and the cylinders. That will remove everything and not damage anything.

Good Luck and enjoy your 85.

It looks like removing that screw removes the whole cylinder and crane assembly, is that the case?
Also is reassembly as simple as reversing that process and are there any loose parts or springs to worry about?

Thanks!

Yes, that is the easiest way to get the cylinder out and should give you all the access you need for cleaning. There are no parts to fall out at this point and the crane slides right back in after cleaning and all that remains is to close the cylinder and reinstall the screw.

The cylinder may be completely disassembled but should not be necessary for just cleaning. Here is a link to a schematic.

If you need ideas on how to clean the 85 come on over to the new www.taurusarmed.net forum. There are a lot of 85 owners there as well as here. Great advice posted so far here on this subjsect. The old Taurusforum.com is history, dysfunctional and abandoned. When the sister forum moves in a month or two the old Taurus forum.com ceases to exist totally. It seems there was no domain name and such for the Taurus site and the sister site had the domain name. There is also a section for Rossi owners that was just added at the new place. Have 4 Taurus revolvers in the guise of models 66,65,85CH, and 94. Many members here who own Taurus products are also members there. Just another source for gun owners.
