Taurus 856 Followed Me Home

If my math is right, that's about 3 Smiths worth of Taurus there.
I like me some Smiths but they are waaaaaaay out of my price range. I did mention on the S&W forum I was starting a home for orphaned and wayward S&W revolvers so send them my way along with large donations so we can feed and house them properly.

Used ones with worn or messed up finish, incorrect grips, etc. can be had for the price of a new Taurus, if you keep your eyes open and are patient.

Here's an example. It will never be beautiful again, but it's a very good shooter.

"Before" and "work in progress".

I dunno, looks pretty good to me. I wouldn't kick it out of bed to use an old parlance......... ;)

You don't care for Taurus much, do you? 😄
Actually, I went kicking and screaming into the Taurus camp. I do have other revolvers made by Colt, Kimber, Ruger, and S&W. I really like 3” barrel revolvers in any caliber. Due to aging hands I shoot mainly 38 Special out of my 357’s. When the 856’s got such good reviews and were at such a reasonable price, I jumped in. Then my interest in 22lr revived and I’ve been in the 327-32 camp for a number of years. True confession from a former Taurus hater…..

my new taurus 856 is a reliable and decent handgun that came at an attractive price. i think that it’s a better choice as a sole centerfire handgun for protection for normal, civilian, suburban, firearms non-enthusiasts than a plastic, semiautomatic, wonder blaster. what i don’t like is mine’s dull black finish and the oem grips that require a hole punch to remove.

30 minutes, wet sandpaper, Mothers Mag & Aluminum, and you'll have a S&W style brushed stainless finish without have to pay the S&W price for it.

Every gun owner should have a punch set (which cost about $5 at Walmart for the most common punches) as it's needed to take apart most rifles and semiauto handguns. You'll need a punch to change the pinned front sight too. The good news is that the grip pin knocks out rather easily.

[EDIT] I just noticed you purchased the black version, so that won't be an option.

Forgot to post this, I found square butt wood grips on the Taurus website a while ago. Better than the oem grips but still pretty small for me. I can get a good grip with them but I have to bend my wrist down to line up the sights.

Grip material, size, and shape are personal choice. I like the beauty of wood but the older I become the more I appreciate the comfort and easy of gripping that butt ugly rubber grips offer. I don't care what they are made of, I have come to detest two finger sized grips.
