Taurus 905

denfoote,

I bought one and traded it. About a month later, I bought it back without loosing any money. I have the stainless model with a concealed hammer. I have not found any holsters made for this gun although it does fit nicely in my Kramer IWB#2 made for my S&W 60. The reason for trading it in the first place was Taurus customer service advised me against shooting +p ammo in it.

I have put about 2,000 rounds of Winchester white box (115g) and 100 rounds of standard pressure Speer Gold Dot (115g) through it with absolutely no problems. Accuracy is acceptable for a snubby and the recoil, though more noticeable than .38s, is more controllable that my J frame smith with .357s. I think I will probably try some of the Corbon Pow’R Ball during my next range trip. I’m sure a few +p rounds will be ok. Overall, I think it is a good gun for the price (I paid $295 + tax).

I picked up a SS with the hammer about a week ago.I've put 100 rounds of WWB and 50 AE 124gr fmj thru it.I was able to get 1 to 1.5" groups at 30 ft firing SA with both types of ammo,DA groups opened up to 2-3" at the same range.A taurus rep told me to go by the manual that came with it as far as with ammo to use.I'ld be using black hills 115 +P gold dots as a carry load if it proves accurate and works well. The biggest problem is finding a holster,a uncle mikes paddle made for the M-60 357 doesn't fit very well and a fobus made for the same model 357 doesn't even come close. The problem is in the top strap It's wider or thicker,i'am not sure with yet.Overall i'am happy with it,i think it's a keeper

I just picked up the 905SS and shot it last weekend. Very accurate gun and shot great too. The kick was not bad at all just a little snap.. Love this gun and can't believe the trigger very smooth. Just like my old S&W.

I've found that some holsters made for the older .38 Special size J-frames may be too tight for the Taurus. On the other hand leather made for the Colt Detective Special work fine. I suspect that holsters made for the new .357 Magnum J-frame will fit the Taurus, but I haven't tried this to see.

I just bought a new Taurus 905, stainless steel. The gun is exceptionally well made. Fit and finish is superior to a famous domestic gun maker. The cylinder lock up is positive with no slack at all. The trigger is smooth in D/A and crisp in S/A. Exterior finish is flawless, can't say that about a couple of my domestic revos.
Now for what I could find wrong. Obviously Taurus took the easy way out and simply used a .38spl cylinder with forcing cones ( I think that's the correct term) starting about midway into each chamber in the cylinder. Consequently there is almost a half inch from the tip of the bullet to the end of the cylinder. I guess that's not a bad thing, I just didn't like it. If they had redesigned the gun with a true 9mm cylinder, the gun would have been much more compact.
Second thing is the OEM moon clips that come with the gun. They really are a POS. Of the five that came with the gun, only three would hold my Speer GD's the other two are useless. The material will rust quickly and they bend very easily. There are some brands of ammo that the case is about .0001 smaller and they fall out of the clips. Taurus sells moon clips for $9.00 for five and they really are of poor quality. I have inquiries out to several moon clip makers asking if they make clips for the 905, no answers yet. If anyone knows where I can get moon clips for this gun please let me know. It is really a shame that the gun itself is one of the best Taurus revos I have seen and owned, the component needed to make the gun work, the moon clips, really are poor.

Gunmeister:

Taurus has just introduced a new revolver called the "Instant Backup" (IB) - that is due out toward the end of the year - which is identical to the one you have except both the frame and cylinder have been shortened about one-quarter inch.

At least one after-market moon clip maker is working on the clip problem. I expect that by late summer/early fall some other options will be available.

Thanks OLD FUFF that's good news about the moon clips, I don't know if you've seen any of the OEM clips Taurus puts out but They are poor.
The gun itself is of very high quality, IMO one of Taurus' best yet. The added weight of the long cylinder could work out to be a good thing because balance is good, it's of a proven design and the little extra weight could help reduce perceived recoil.
PHOENIX, go to www.galleryofguns.com click on gun locator you can usually find a 905 on the Taurus page.
Thanks again.

So, the moon clips suck, eh.
I'm glad the gun is of high quality, though. I have a 605 that is thoroughly decent. It's my only revolver. I was looking to add to the stable. But, if the moon clips are no good, I might have to wait until Taurus solves that little problem!!

The one thing I hate about Taurus is that they use the gun buying public to beta test their designs instead of doing it in-house like everybody else!! :(

Hey DENFOOTE, your right about Taurus using the public as their test facility but hell we both know that Kel-Tec does the same thing.
I was totally amazed at the workmanship in the Taurus 905, Taurus has come a long way recently. Too bad the moon clips weren't on par with the gun, dam shame, hopefully like Old Fuff says some aftermarket clips will become available soon.
I had an older pre-keylock 605 with the 2.25" barrel a few years ago, I traded a guy for a domestic Walther PPK/S which was a mistake. The Taurus 605 was great, the PPK/S was a jam-o-matic, wish I'd kept the 605, I liked that 2.25" barrel. John

I think that the problems related to the OEM moon clips may be caused by a combination of material and heat-treating (or lack of it). The basic design apears to be O.K. and if a solution hasn't been found already I'm sure it won't be long before it is. In the meantime other clip makers are in the process of developing their own products. I see light at the end of the tunnel. If Taurus wasn't pretty sure they had the answers I don't think they would have introduced the forthcoming I.B. frame guns chambered in 9mm. They, after all, will be using the same clips.

I've got about 25 of Taurus's clips I load em up with Wally World White Box Ammo the night before a trip to the range. I bought a cheap plastic pistol box with a foam rubber liner for $8.75. I stand 20 clips of 5 rounds standing primer side down in the pistol box, close the lid and everything stays put. When I get to the range I open the box and there's 100 rounds ready to go, I love it. Taurus sells their clips five for $9.00 they are terrible but are the only act in town. I made a little plastic jig and with a tiny screwdriver to close up the gap and a pair of needle nosed pliers to help straighten bent clips, I'm doing OK. But as soon as someone like Beckham's comes up with an aftermarket clip, I'll be all over them.

Gunmeister:

You aren't too far from Taurus, who are located in Miami. I'd give them a call and have a friendly exchange of views about the clips. Maybe they might have some later editions. If not, nothing gained, nothing lost.

Gunmeister,
This too is my second 605. I also had a prelock 605 that I got rid of to finance another gun that I had the hot's for!! Very soon, regret set in real bad!! Only very recently, was I able to afford to replace it!! I'm not crazy about that stupid lock, but what the :cuss: !!!!

Read somewhere that Taurus was also going to put out a 5 shot in 40 S&W
along the same lines as the 905. Anyone else hear of the this or is it just wishful thinking?

Given the dimensions of their small-frame cylinder, I don't think it would be possible to accommodate five of the .40 chambers. Pity, though... it would be a GREAT carry gun!

I think they may have been working on a 5-shot/40 S&W on their next-larger medimm frame. Don't know what happened to it.

I'm interested in this gun...but how much does it weigh??? No info on the Taurus website...methinks this is important info for a snub. Anybody got weight info on the lightweight and steel versions? Thanks.

Thanks Denfoote, I thought it would be pretty close to the -85, but didn't know it was the same frame, I thought it might be smaller.

Check out the Davidson's web site. Their gun locator gives the weight information. Use it to look up the 905. All they have in stock is the stainless, which leads me to believe that is all that is being imported right now. :(
I too would like to possess the Ultra-Lite version!!! ;)

A quick check reveals that they have only five in stock, so you had better hurry!! They are running in the $331 range here in AZ, :)
