I had a 38/357 SAA Gaucho I was selling to my friend today. I informed him the Cylinder Bushing was missing, as I checked it just before he came over and it was gone. It seems these are designed to fall out and get lost on cleaning.

I saw in the archives that some here had fired "full load" 357 without it, but I seem caution on that. Seems to me at least a washer should be put in there to take-up the slack. It does not seem to have a load bearing point however.

Yes I called the factory and they said the bushing was a "regulated" item. Really a washer is regulated I ask them? Yes they said so. Send the gun in to get the bushing.

Seems the bushing could even be made out of resin like Delrin to me.

Anyone recently have the issue of loosing this bushing? Can a Colt bushing work? I am still searching for parts shops that might have a colt part.

I have no idea if a colt base pin bushing will work or not.

However, don't even consider replacing it with a washer, or shooting it without the base pin bushing!

It controls end-shake of the cylinder.
It is not a drop-in part they can just mail you.
The base pin bushing has to be fitted to the frame.

But how hard could it be to find the original one on the floor you lost while cleaning it??

Hi RCMODEL,

It would have been lost on the range bench where I cleaned it last many weeks ago. Not rolled under the couch like most will do ;)

My friend makes all kinds of metal and other bushing for non-gun items, what makes this "fitting" of this part so Special?

What tolerance is needed between the cylinder and frame?

I've had 4 Gauchos, and 1 had an issue where the bushing came off in cleaning. Either I cleaned it too much, or the others not enough. Didn't lose it though, and I keep an eye on it from now on.

I think I found something here.

A Gun Smithin' book on Google Books discussing SAA as something old new again talks about base pin bushings, how to fit them, and that they are small coin on Brownells. I see Brownells has them for several SAA models.

I pulled an 45LC U-bird out and compared to yet anther 357 Gaucho (this one seems to have the bushing pressed or glued in) and yes they are the same base pin.

So getting this base pin and following the fitting instructions I think could do the job.

Anyone else fit a base pin on an SAA before?

Well, I'm getting confused now.

First, you said you lost the base pin bushing.
Now you are talking about fitting a new base pin itself?

Look here at #6 Base Pin Bushing, and #5 Base Pin.

http://www.peacemakerspecialists.com/parts.html

The base pin bushing fits inside the cylinder and it is fitted to the gun by faceing off the front until it fits in the frame with no end shake.

This is a Colt base pin bushing:

The Base Pin is what goes in the frame that the cyinder base pin bushing rotates on.

Sorry, I am confusing you. We lost the base pin bushing.

I read about how to fit it. I found ones that would need turned down to fit and then need fitted.

Looks like a trip to the factory for that gun, as I would rather they do all of that and Taurus does not sell parts to the gun smiths.

Seem like these need that special fitting for Head Space and End-Lash. Looks like that is why you need to send your Ruger Single Six back to Ruger to get a new cylinder.

What seemed simple to my eye turned out later to be more complex once I got good advise here and also researched some myself.

Thanks Guys.

PS, RCmodel; have you ever been to Argonia for the Rocket Launches?
