I picked up a Taurus 85 about a year ago. Had never seen one but got it for $125.00 in perfect condition with a set of Houge mono grips in Goncalo Alves (nib) and a set of newer Pacmyers on it. I shot it and love the thing! 4 in .357 mag and shoots great. But, in trying to find anything like carry solutions for it onliune I see nothing! I can't even find IT on the net....why? What's the deal? Was this a very limited or unpopular handgun? It looks like a model 29 in nickel but is a .357

Shoot yeah, those grips are from like 1970 and probably worth about $250.00! Beautiful light blonde with very dark red lines running thru them.

Are you sure it's a model 85? I believe all the 85's were .38 spl.

+1 on that for current production models anyway .The model 85 is a snub small frame in .38 Spl.

N-frame size in .357 would be something akin to the M608 ?

It's probobly a mdl. 65 4" 357 fixed sights. Page 36 in the 2006 Taurus Catalog.

The only 5 shot .357 magnum that Taurus put out at one time was the 605,but that was long after the 85 came out. Know the 650 and 651 are out. Have the 65,66, and 85CH. All Taurus 85s are and have been .38 Special and are 5 shooters.

Nope, it is an 85 and has a 4in barrel, adjustable rear sight, front ramp and is .357mag....if you open the cylender on a Tarus it says the model number i=on the frame where the gate contacts tha frame. I opened it and double checked it...85 and it is nickel brushed finish. I should I may be mistaken or remembering incorrectly because this was about three months ago when I looked. Ill look again tonite when I get home and take some pics....you guys may be right about it not being an 85 but Im sure it is an 8something....I swear it is an 86...like I said though, may be mistaken....

That.. is certainly strange. The above posters are all correct , and the taurus model 85 is to the best of my knowledge exclusively in .38.. not only that, they never came with a 4in. barrel , AND never came with an adjustable rear sight. That certainly sounds FAR more like a model 65 or 66 to me.

Sniper X , this thread certainly warrants some pictures.

Edit: The 65 by the way would have come with fixed sights, unless an adjustable was later added.

Ok, I feel dumb!

I think it is hammer block but Ill look tonite...BTW, what does it look like a copy of to you guys, I have my idea, but what do you think?

It looks like my M66 Tauri which are M19/66 Smith clones. The blued 3" is an older hammer block action, the nickel 4" is a transfer bar action. Perhaps the 88 is a pre M66???? I do like the stocks on that gun. Man, you scored on the wood if nothing else. LOL! My two guns are quite accurate, super shooters, though. I like 'em a lot. I've owned a M19 as well as a Security Six and both these guns are more accurate with .38 ammo. They're just AS accurate with .357. the nicked 4 inch one is the jewel of the pair, but I like the 3" gun for carry.

I'll bet if you look under the cylender gate on that nickel one it says 88...it loks exactly like my 88. Check it ad see if it says 66 or 88 I'm curious. Thanks and I love the grips to. The ones I took off are real pacyederms and are OK but butt ugly. I like th wood ones better for both appearence and feel.

I don't understand those markings. All of the 80s numbered guns (80,82,83,84and86) in my books are .38Sps as is the snub 85.. That one sure looks like a model 66. The stamping inside mine's crane is kinda blurred but that one is sharp.
Here's an older blued 66 with the old lock work and a newer steel frame 85 made sometime in the 90s that has the newer and the cute little keyed lock also
