Guys,

I came across a stainless Taurus 4 inch bbl revolver with the words "Mountain Revolver" on it. It's ported and the ports are made with a chamber for the gas so the 4 inch barrel really is maybe 3 1/2 (at least effective barrel length.)

Looks tight enough but I have no idea as to any complaints about them.

The gun even looks alot like a S&W Mountain gun but with regular wood grips. It has thinner barrel and 1/2 underlug (again like a S&W).

They want $398 for the gun and might go lower.

I have several S&W N frames, including S&W Mountain Revolver but I hate shooting them alot due to their value.

So, is this Taurus a good gun?

Thanks,

Deaf

I saw an amazing S&W Taurus clone this week, hammerless. I don't see how you could go wrong for that price if you like the gun.

Taurus is really hit or miss. I sold a lot of them when I was working in a gun shop. We quit carrying them after awhile because too many were coming back for repair. In all fairness to Taurus, they fixed them and got them back to us with some degree of regularity, but customers tend to take out the failure of the weapon on the shop. It was just too much of a headache. I am not trying to be rude, but for that price I would guess it is one of the misses.

I'd be willing to bite at that price (though, yeah, negotiate as much down as you can). Remember, the warrenty is still there though it may take a coon's age to get the bugs out if it's a bad one. OTOH, every Taurus _I've_ owned was well worth the money. The 650 CIA I had was a very good snubby, I just can't shoot for [BLEEP] with a less than 4" barrel so I sold it towards a Model 64.

Uh, what???

+1. They aren't really big collector guns like Pythons or really worthy of being safe queens. They are utility guns, meant to be packed, get holster wear, scratches, sweated on, dirty, and most of all....shot.

I dunno what it auctioned for.

That pic is still hanging around on one of the auction sites, after the auction having ended years ago.

If it fascinates you, and you feel like spending a day or two of your life on it, the price that store is asking seems reasonable enough that you can probably unload it for about what you paid for it if you get tired of it.

(Assuming that specimen does not have mechanical issues that will turn into a time and money pit.)

I have fired "full-house" loads in four-inch .44 Magnum revolvers.
I get enough of that real fast.

By the time I "down-load" the .44 to the point where I can actually enjoy shooting it, I'm at .40 S&W velocities, and I begin to wonder what is the point. Especially if its a gun that doesn't move me. I might as well just shoot my Glock 22 at that point.

But I digress.

Every Taurus revolver I've ever bought, I later wished I'd put that money towards a S&W........and later I sold them and did.

I might as well just shoot my Glock 22 at that point.
A downloaded .44Mag quickly becomes a .44Spl and if you'd rather shoot a Glock .40 than a S&W N-frame .44Spl then I don't even know what to tell you. :barf:

By the time I "down-load" the .44 to the point where I can actually enjoy shooting it, I'm at .40 S&W velocities

A 240gr projectile at .40S&W velocity is still substantially more powerful than a typical ~165gr .40 S&W.

My favorite load in my REAL S&W Mountain Gun is a 240 LSW hard cast at 1000 fps.

Yes that is more than a .40 S&W gets but way less than a full .44 mag load.

I'll just have to wait a few weeks and go back to that guy. Offer $300.

Thing is I have no way of knowing if it shoots off or keyholes or whatever. And pawn shops have a 'as-is' policy with no returns.

Still I'd like to have an inexpensive .44 for field use.

Thanks,

Of course that Taurus looks like a S&W revolver, they steal a lot of companies designs and make them cheaper in South America.

I'm not a big fan of Taurus products and would much rather spend my money on an American product.

As for not shooting your S&W revolvers, unless it's brand new and never shot in the box, I for one would be shooting and enjoying those revolvers if I owned them and not thinking about spending money for no reason on an inferior product.
