Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Taurus 605/85 Polymer framed 357 mag or 38sp? I believe they are called the polymer protectors

I have only ever fondled one. the trigger pull is actually pretty decent (kinda like an LCR) and something about the flat top is appealing, but man ... It looks odd even for my tastes.

I have a .38 Special Polymer Protector that I really like. I purchased it as a carry gun to have while I was recovering from some strong-side elbow surgery that prevented me from racking the slide on my sem-auto EDC. The local pawn/gun shop had this pistol on the shelf and I liked the feel of it and the fiber optic front sight.

My shooting experience has been very positive. The pistol has been perfectly reliable and is fairly soft shooting with regular ammo. With +P ammo, there is more recoil, as expected from a lightweight gun. My criteria for a trigger is that it should not be a distraction, and the Poly meets that standard -- it is short and light in single action and smooth in double action. Accuracy is good, and by far the best characteristic is the fiber optic front sight. I have had trouble with other snubbies, including M85's and S&W Airweights, because of the short sight radius and the lack of contrast with the sights. The red fiber optic sight solves those problems and makes the gun very easy for me to shoot decently. On my pistol, the sights are on target with a six-o"clock hold at 10 yards. I can definitely recommend the Poly Protector as a shooter.

The overall size is comparable to a M85, but the wide polymer frame does make it more difficult to find holsters to fit. I found a left-handed Galco IWB with the markings STO159 and H109L that has worked perfectly while I have needed off-hand carry. I think I will have one of the local guys build me a custom carry holster now that my strong side arm has healed.

I think the Polymer Protector is a good value. Mine is definitely a keeper. I hope this little review is helpful.

End of Quote.
