Little help I was in gun store today with my 15 yr old daugther He has a new Taurus PT 22 in case with God awful pink grips. Well my daugther went bonkers over it. Wants for her FIRST I OWN PISTOL We shoot hand guns from 22's to 45 auto so she knows how to shoot. I was 12 when I got my first rifle She got a BB gun at 8 and started 22 rifle at 12. Wife and I have really no problem with her having. She's a honor roll student Beta club ect..We of course will keep it with our other pistols.
My Question is are they worth a darn. I hear good and bad about Taurus . By the way she checked out a KT in 32 said really lite but plastic and handed back.

I did not have a problem with jamming with the PT22 I had. If you can get one for a good price, I'd say go for it.

jmm

I had one that was very reliable. It shot about 4 inches high at 10 yards though. Mark

.22 automatics handguns, especially the type that might be useful for defense tend to be picky on ammo, you'll have to run CCI Mini Mag or some other quality hi-velocity ammo (especially since rimfire has it's occasional failures to fire). The Beretta 21 and Taurus PT-22 both rely on the blowback only for extraction (no extractor) so if the round doesn't go off you have to operate the tip up barrel to get things going again.

An extractor even on a gun that ideally doesn't need it, is a nice thing, the Beretta 87 or Bersa .22LR comes to mind. Better yet, tell her to research it herself and kindly suggest she do what her parents did and get a job, adding "the bums lost, the bums will always lose!"

I mean, is it even a special occasion? Give me free gun day? if she's getting honor roll raise the bar to straight "A"s

Your Mileage May Vary. My brother's jams a lot, with any ammo it's tried with.

I'm sure you could get pink grips for a Ruger Mk I-II-III.

A buddy has one, and I enjoy the opportunity to shoot it. It has quite a nice DAO trigger(as such can be), and has no feeding issues. The one thing that concerns me is with misfires, and the lack of an extractor as has been mentioned. Even if it had an extractor, I'd defy the average female to have the strength and/or dexterity to operate the slide. There's a reason they have tip-up barrels, LOL!:)

I bought one in '95 or so and rarely shot it until this past year. At first, the thing would jam and fail to feed just about every round. I eventually messed with it and found out that if the cartridges aren't in the magazine..."just right", it won't feed correctly. I can now get it to fire 100% reliably for 100+ rounds. To get the rounds lined up just right, I load the magazine, turn it upside down, pull the follower a little bit to loosen up the ammo in it, and it will eventually get all the noses lined up in an upward position (downward with it upside down, of course). If they are put in wrong, you can actually get a round jammed in the middle of the magazine and it won't feed anything..........two pluses for the gun......you can double strike the round if you need to (some 22LR ammo is known to fail to detonate - Remington Thunderbolts, for one).....I also like the tip-up barrel to chamber the first round..........additional tid-bit.....the gun is not very accurate. It's pretty decent up to 10 yards......the sight radius is probably the main issue with accuracy.......or maybe just with me.

I have had one for a few years now. It has always been very reliable. It is really too big for pocket carry and too small in caliber anyway. And, it is rather small for a target gun. But, I just enjoy playing with it. It does have a decent trigger and with a little practice, I can bounce cans and pine cones around with it. My wife saw one with the pink grips at the gun show we went to a few weeks back. She liked it too!

My pt-22 goes bang every time I pull the trigger. It is in my front pocket right now. I don't feel like carrying my 442 today. I have heard a mix of reviews on them but I got a good one. I run CCI standard vel. out of it.

My PT-22 was one of the lemons. It jammed with every type of ammo from the cheap stuff on up to CCI Stingers and everything in between. I sent back to Taurus no less than 3 times and they still couldn't or wouldn't fix it. It soured me on Taurus customer service and helped to sour me on their guns. Some of their other guns made me think that Taurus is not a good choice.

The PT-22 is a copy of the Beretta 21-A. I have one of those and it has been a real winner. Much more accurate than the PT-22 and has been as reliable as any .22lr I have ever owned.

I would see if you could find a Bersa in .22lr. I have two of them and they are great. They are far more accurate than either the Beretta or the Taurus and have better sights and triggers. If you could find one in nickel, I think she would like the looks of that just as much as the PT-22.

Good luck. It is nice to see that you are bringing your kids up right.;)

I had a PT-22 and it was a terrible jammer. I shot a friend's similar Beretta and it was a jammer.

Maybe she would like a SW 431 or 432, if you like a 32 HR Mag.

Also, the Ruger SS Bearcats are nice, similar 22.

Jams, doesn't jam seems luck of draw We have a MKII to play with and I have a Beretta 950 in 25 auto . I have 4 380's 3 38'/357,44 mag and 45 autos We have lots of pistols for me to carry and my girls to shoot. I always use CCI mini mag in all my 22's. I'going to think some more on it . But Keep the replies coming.

Taurus PT-22

For once I got lucky based on what I have read. I am the guy who usually has problems with any gun I buy, but my PT-22 has been flawless. No jams what so ever. It is fairly accurate to 10 yards, but again this is a plinker not a defense gun for me.

Bought one right when they first came out in the 1990s. It jammed on the first trip to the range - sent it to Taurus and got it back a couple of weeks later - Not a single jam since - Had it for many years - Always works - no problems at all. No misfires.

Sold it to my mom a few months ago because I wanted the $ to buy a Glocklight. Anyway, since it's just a couple of miles up the street, I can shoot it whenever I want.

With its DOA trigger, it's not really a super target caliber gun.

For a pocket gun, it is decent, if you don't mind a 22. For a girl that age to have fun at the range, I would buy something else.

Sorry to hear about all the problems everyone else is listing above. Mine worked great.

I got a used one for 60 bucks. rosewood grips and gold accents.

mine is ammo finicky. with the right stuff its great. with the wrong it sucks.
fun little gun just for the glam factor.

I had lots of problems with mine. Get it for her anyway. If it helps instill a life-long interest in firearms, $168 is a small price to pay, even if it jams a lot and has to go back to the factory a few times. By the time she is old enough to legally carry, she will be ready for something better anyway.

Well we picked it up for her today. Works fine as far as feeding and ejecting both Federal and CCI stingers. Just had 2 or 3 failed to fire on first hit. Required 2nd hit to fire. This was every mag. I was useing same ammo in the Ruger MKII target I also picked up and it never missed a beat So I guess I will be going to shop in AM. Its only a backyard play pistol but I want it to work It is her first gun. This is first Taurus Could be my last one .

"This is first Taurus Could be my last one ."

Some of us tried to warn you. I can forgive you because I think I know why you really bought it. I think it was because your daughter had her heart set on it and you wanted to give her something she would like. I think that is a really nice thing you did. It is too bad that it is not working 100%. I hope she doesn't lose interest in guns just because of this.

Maybe you can find her something she would like just as much but made by a better company. Check out the Beretta line of .22lrs. I know I would love a Cheetah in .22lr!:D
