Anyone have any experience with Taurus PT 911?

I'm thinking about adding it to the herd and wondering if anyone has shot or carried it. (It will go in carry rotation with my S&W 908 and a Smith model 60,.38 special).

Please don't turn this into a "I hate Taurus because...." as I have two others (PT99 and 917cs) and my son has my .44 special and I've not had any problems with any of them, they shoot just fine. Just trying to determine whether its a decent buy if I can find one at a decent price.

Thanks in advance.....

I've carried 1911s for decades on and off duty and for concealed carry, . I've also owned several Taurus handguns. Based on my experience with both, I wouldn't choose a Taurus 1911 for a carry gun. That said, I personally would not choose any low buck 1911 for a carry gun.

1911s that are being sold for $450 +/- are able to be offered at that price point because the companies that make them are using cheap components and/or cheap labor. Either way, you're getting what you pay for - a gun built to sell for the least amount of money possible and still make a profit while attracting a market segment that wants a 1911 but can't afford/won't pay for better quality. Certainly they're not the equals of your S&Ws.

If you want a gun to trust your life to and have Taurus 1911 money to spend go buy a S&W M&P, a Springfield XD, Beretta PX4, or a Glock. They're all excellent quality guns, head and shoulders above any 1911s available in the same price range. If you want a 1911 to carry save your money until you can afford to buy a better quality gun.

Had the PBL version of the PT-1911. As good a 1911 as I've had or seen. I have several sub 500.00 1911 and the parts are just fine. Cheap, non-union labor encourages me to buy more of them. Compare them to my Colt any time. But let;s not turn this into a .......

Guys, the PT-911 isn't a 1911 model. It's a hybrid of the PT-92 and uses the lugless Browning breech lock. Think of a Sig 226 slide that's been put onto a Beretta 92 frame with the frame mounted safety.

I've handled one but haven't fired any of that series. If you like the 92 grip but don't like the open slide it might be a good choice.

Guess I made the same mistake on the model number, sorry about that.
Still, given my previous experience with Taurus products, I'd have a hard time trusting one for carry, the quality is just too hit and miss. I've had decent ones and others that just didn't work. They're like the little girl with the curl - when they're good they're very good, when they're bad, they're horrid.

Three things:

Much appreciate the responses.

I stay off of Taurusarmed as every time I log on my malware virus software goes nutso and I get out quick.

I was in my LGS and they had a Star A-70 in the case. Traded for a Browning FN 1922 that someone chromed and I really didn't like shooting and had been sitting in the safe gathering dust.

And yes, I don't suppose there are many who are enamored with all-steel, single action, 8 round pistols from a company that's out of business. But they get great reviews, it's in near new shape, it ate everything I put down the pipe and I've got four absolute winners I regularly carry (S&W 908, S&W m60, S&W 990L and Sig P6, all quality pistols which, yes, I trust with my life.)

I have a PT911 (not a 1911....a 911). I like it. I think I'd prefer the 909 with the curved backstrap rather than the straight backstrap of the 911 but that's just a guess.

Palmetto State Armory had a batch of these not long ago and I got one of those. I would have gotten the 909 but they only had blued and I wanted the stainless.

It shot left but I drifted the sights in. The sights look like they are polymer. The DA pull is pretty nice, the single action feels like about 6 or 7 pounds...kind of heavy. Shoots a bit high with heavier bullets but more on target with lighter bullets.

Shoots well enough. Not super thrilled about it but it's a good gun. I like it as much as I like any double stack DA/SA auto. Not my favorite format and none of them have ever excited me, yet I buy one every once in a while just to see if maybe I was wrong.

Mags are hard to find, as with many Taurus guns. I bought it because I like stainless and PSA was selling them for $310 ($299 for the blue). Don't know where they got a batch of these new in current Taurus "Carry On" packaging with late 2013 date codes on a gun that was discontinued in 2010. Taurus USA has the release date as 2015 from their facility in Miami. They must be cleaning out the warehouse in Brazil.

So a lot of the reason I bought it was that price, and it's pretty in stainless. Other people seem to like it more than I do.
