I just got a Taurus PT-99 (PT-92 with adjustable sights). Are there any brands of magazines to look for or to avoid? Also, does anyone have links to sights that sell decent magazines for a good price?

Thanks,
PAC

MecGars are the gold standard. No sense in getting ten-rounders if you live in a free state.

I have bought my MecGars from Arizona Gun Runners, Copes Distributing, CDNN, and others without concern.

Thanks guys. I've had very good experience dealing with copes, so I'd like to buy there. They list both 15 and 17 rd mags as "flush fit". Is there any reason to go with a 15 rd mag rather than a 17 rounder? I'm guessing the 15 rd mags are for NJ residents... but maybe I'm missing something.

Avoid anthing that's not factory OEM or MecGar. The OEMs are probably made by MecGar anyway.

If you're tempted by those $10 Eagle mags, don't be. They wouldn't even lock in the gun (they mag release cut was in the wrong place and the top of the mag was impacting the ejector. I was able to get a couple USA mags to work........for a few rounds with lots of dremel tool work. ProMags went in the gun but didn't function reliably (great if you want to practice malfunction drills). I have a few "Asian contract mags" that I got from CDNN that are basically Beretta "Asian contract mags" with a slightly relocated mag release cutout. These worked ok.

Don't waste the money. Mags are just about the most important part of your gun.

Standard capacity was 15rd, but somewhere along the way Mecgar figured out that they could easily get 17rds inside the mag body without spring bind if they designed things properly. So the 15rd mags are for NJ and those who like things 'stock', and the 17rd mags are for those of us who believe that a large grip frame should give as much capacity as can be made reliable. :D

I have a PT-99AF I bought about 1985. Never had a problem with it. I use Ram-Line mags that hold 18 rounds. They have worked great. My only complaint is that the rounds rattle in them, but not in the factory mag.

Oh, I forgot, I do have one Ramline 18 rounder. It has functioned reliably. Downsides are: the aforementioned rattle and they cannot be rebuilt. The spring is riveted on the inside body of the magazine and once something happens to it, there's no recourse. I haven't seen these since before the ban (that's when I got mine). I doubt they make them anymore. They were pretty decent, just sounded like a baby rattle when fully loaded.:uhoh:

MecGar gets the 17 rounds in by putting in a ittybitty follower without a stabilizing tab. I have both 15 and 17 rounders and trust the 15 rounders more, I seem to get less jams and they do not rattle as much as the 17s.

I would go with MecGar, they are cheaper than the oem (and by now, they probably make the factory mags anyway). ProMags are so-so. Do not get USA mags if anyone offers them.

Did any other companies make 18 rd mags?

Centerfire has 18 rd mags on sale for $10, but they don't say what brand they are. If ram-line was the only company that made 18 rounders, I'll snatch some up.
