Normally I don't have very much good to say about Taurus guns, but recently I obtained a PT-92 that has impressed me. It's far removed from the old Taurus PT-92s I had in the early 90s, plus it's stainless steel. From a fit and finish standpoint, it seems to rival the Berettas and even the safety seems to be of much better quality than the early PT-92s.

Additionally, I recall that the early PT-92s weren't quite up to Beretta standards when it came to accuracy. How do the newer models fare?

I'm also interested in hearing peoples' comments on the new PT-92s. Do they take +P rounds okay? I have a Beretta magazine that fits but doesn't lock; also some early PT-92 mags that were designed for the magazine releases at the bottom. Can I use a Dremel to make my own detente?

Finally, I've ordered a few Mecgar 20-rounders, but am wondering about the Pro-Mag 30-rounders. Some people say they work flawlessly, but I want to get more opinions. The PT-92 I have sports the rail at the bottom. Do the M92 military holsters take these guns okay?

I was never a big fan of the "T-word" guns either, but back in the beginning of this year I bought a PT709 Slim, which has turned out to be a really solid pistol and is my EDC. I've been on the hunt for a full size 9mm, as usual money is tight and I wanted something different than a Glock or the clones. That's when I ran into the Taurus PT92 AFS Combat. I fell hard for its looks, after some research I knew I'd have to have one
It is hard to find a bad word about the PT, owners love them and reviewers give the pistols high marks for everything. I start a thread at Taurusarmed.net to get more info on the PT and by the next day I had ordered one. :) It should be in my hands by the end of the week.
From what I've read the Mec-Gar 18 and 20 rounders work great, although I have no info. on the 30 round mags.. I have a couple 18's sitting in my order cart I just don't to buy anything extra until I know the gun is in hand and I know its functional.

The PT-92 is the best gun Taurus makes -- all the Beretta 92 goodness with SA cocked and locked option.

Yes you can re-cut the mag catch notch, but the major issue is getting the proper location. I do it using a drill first and then finish off the final shape and top edge location with a Dremel and some small files.

As to Pro-Mag, I've had far more that didn't work than did, so I'd advise saving your money and sticking with the Meg-Gars. Frankly I can't understand how Pro-Mag stays in the magazine business, do people buy them and never actually try to use them?

I got one just like yours a few years ago. Just wanted a decent knock around 9mm. that offered the option of a Condition One safety (and wasn't as expensive as a Hi-Power or a M1911). I was also looking for an FEG or an older Star but couldn't find any at the time. The PT-92 impressed me with the quality of the materials used and with the overall fit and finish. I have used both factory mags and a couple of Mec-Gars. The only problem I have had with the Mec-Gars is sometimes they fail to lock the slide back after the last round. The DA trigger is a little heavy but since I got it for its Condition One option, the SA has been just fine. Accuracy is also acceptable for a service grade semi-auto with fixed sights. I tried a couple of different holsters (designed for the Beretta 92/Taurus PT-92), but couldn't find any that fit properly with that accessory rail. Finally I went with a generic nylon slide type holster and it has been good enough for a utility type set-up.
 
Thanks for the info. I've heard nothing but good things about the Taurus. It's certainly a beautiful pistol. I've missed having my Beretta and this is the next best thing. Why is mine all shiny and MikePaiN's isn't?

The version I bought is called "PT92 AFS Combat"..I guess "Combat" denotes the matte stainless slide and gunmetal frame with stainless accents.
I don't know what it is about this model(I usually don't care for anything but black and no bling what-so-ever) but the damn thing caught my attention and wouldn't let go until I broke down and bought it... I can't wait to put eyeballs on the real gun later this week, maybe I'll even shoot it at some point ;)

I have a 92FS and it's a pretty good gun. I did when I first got it have major ftf problems and sent it back to Taurus and they replaced the barrel and a few other s parts. They did "lose" the gun for a week or two but its back in hand now and been running the last two years without hiccup. My kid starting shooting USPSA and glommed my M&P9 so I'll be shooting this in matches until I decide what I'm going to do.
 
This is my new favorite gun. I got a used stainless pt-92 and was pretty skeptical. However, this gun has returned my love for shooting, which had waned a bit over the years.

It is ACCURATE! Chew out the center bullseye accurate at 7 yards. That is good enough for me, and I'm grouping good at 27 yards too (max at my range).

Not one jam yet, and I've done some torture type tests (shooting without cleaning, no oil). These tests would make my Beretta inox stumble.

What else can I say...I have a physical impairment in my shooting hand, and the light to no recoil is very nice.

I also love that for 30 bucks, I have plenty of range ammo, hearing protection and targets. Makes shooting fun and affordable again. PT 92s are awesome. I've owned colts, baby eagles, xds, glocks, sigs, berettas, springfield, you name it. This one runs with the best of those.
 
I have a 1993 model PT92. Great pistol and eats anything thrown at it. I was going to get a new one too but cannot get past that hideous rail.

I feel your pain, fortunately I got most of my handguns before they started putting the goofy rails on everything -- for me, I knew it was getting out of hand when the small Kel-Tec single stack 9mm came out with a rail :(
 
I have the older model 92F series. I bought it when the Army switched from the 1911 to the berretta. I was disgusted with the performance of the berreta with fixed sights. I had to aim lower left hand corner to hit the X on a silhouette target. My 92F is the satin nickel version with an adjustable rear sight. Plainly put it is a tack driver.
 
Can someone tell me what the various Taurus designations are?

What's the difference between a Taurus PT-92 AR and a PT-92 AFS? Are there any more designations?

Thanks, Mike. So are all the ARs stainless steel? Also, where's the best place to get some white grips (not pearl)? I wish Taurus had sold the gun with white grips.

I'm gonna toss this question out there again -- has anyone tried the 30-round Pro-Mag magazines for this gun? I know the Pro-Mags aren't much good, but they're the only ones offering the 30-rounders. Now you're probably going to say, well, there's a good reason no one else is making them...but some people have said they work. I just would like to hear from some.
 
I plan on keeping mine pretty much stock so I haven't looked around for accessories, outside of mags.
All I can say on the 30r Pro-mags is...if you must have it, you're going to have to take your chances....some work, most don't.
 
I had an early T-92, and I had problems with it. Particularly that the DA kept slipping, the hammer would drop before it was all the way back. I took it to a smith, he said to just clean it and not worry about it. (I got rid of it.) Never seen that problem before or since on a Beretta or a Taurus, but it's still in the beck of my head every time I use one, I guess because I never solved the mystery.

I brought home a double handful of Beretta mags from the army, and I was advised not to try to modify them to fit the Taurus. Look at it this way. What is the cause of most pistol malfunctions? The magazine. What is a great way to ensure that your gun won't run well? Buy cheap magazines. Grinding a hole in a magazine that was intended to fit something else is a step below THAT. Bit the bullet, buy a few more real ones. It could be worse, look at the list price for Para-Ordnance hi-caps.

And that was just as the '94 AWB went into effect, so I made a few bucks selling the Beretta mags anyway. They were the original ones with the floorplate that fits flush with your fingers.

No I have seen PT-92 AR's that are blue; usually cost a little less than the polished stainless steel models. HandgunGrips.com shows grips for the PT-99 (adjustable sight version of the PT-92), and PT-100 (.40 cal.), in something called bonded ivory. Should fit your PT-92 as well.
 
Currently I have 2 Taurus autoloaders. PT 92 AFS (no rail) and a PT 845 Stainless. Having fired Berettas in the past, I'll take the Taurus any day for accuracy and reliability.
 
I just finished a pretty big job on my dads PT92-AFS that my brother who died a few years back left him. I guess while i was showing off my trigger jobs i do to my guns my dad wanted his fluffed and buffed also.
I dont think ive even shot this gun before, So i went in knowing very little about it.

Work done:
Full detail strip and cleaning with grease and lube applied on assembly.
Sear and hammer both has the black coating removed in the right spots and then 1500 grit sanded and Dremel buffed with rubbing compound.
Grip screws and nuts locktited.

The gun is alot more simple to work on than a 1911 thats for sure. Taurus internals on the gun i did were very nice and showing little wear. Frame was rough with tool marks internally but who cares. Over all i was very impressed with the gun itself and also how it turned out.

All i done is what i call a "fluff and buff" that only affects smoothness of the trigger. Which is good seeing how heavy the DA pull is. The SA pull really improved with the work also.

Imo that gun will be around alot longer than i will and im only 39.
A few months back i added a rear adjustable target sight from Brownells that raised the POA 6"-8" at 25 yards. The factory sights left alot to be desired.

Personally i wouldn't CCW with it, But for HD and range duty you would be hard pressed to do better for the same money.
I carry a PT1911 btw :)
 
I had the shiny one. Very nice gun. Never had one problem with it. I finally traded it for something I wanted more. :D You know how it goes. Sometimes you just have to have something different for no good reason.

I lost a few GREAT guns that way and i regret it alot.

Luckily i sold the PPS to my mom so i may be able to buy that one back one day.
