This may have already been hashed out but I was thinking the Taurus pt-92 might not be a bad choice for a versatile competition gun. I can use it for IDPA in SSP or "cocked and locked" for ESP. Jarvis custom makes nice custom barrels for it and I've seen them set up with a compensator for a fraction of what other custom guns cost. The new ones come with the accessory rail so I could use (or fabricate) a scope mount for those competitions that allow it. I know it won't be a tuned 1911 but for the money it seems like a good place to start. Whats your opinion?
Note: No "get a glock" please. I'm not asking about Glocks, as fine as they are, I'm asking about a Taurus PT-92. If someone wants to talk me into a CZ75 for the role I descibed I can certainly understand that argument though.
