Has anyone had any experience with this new pistol? It appears to be a good looking pistol with clean lines, but I've not had the opportunity to see one up close, just from what I've seen on the Taurus website. Also, does anyone have an idea of its cost? There doesn't seem to be any pricing on the Taurus website.

Thanks

Taurus 709

Took mine out for a second time yesterday and literally had a blast:D tried Wal-Mart 115 Fed fmj and some 115 jhp reloads and still no jams whatsoever. Accuracy was around 2.5 in @ 10 yards for most loads when I really did my part but firing as soon as I had a sight picture I got about 5 in. I have a PF9 also and trigger is better, IMHO, on the 'Slim' than the PF9, Here's some pics comparing a few different pistols I have for CCW.

Do you happen to have a holster currently for you 709? I am trying to find something that is going to fit nice. I'm thinking about getting a couple of kydex sheets and start molding my own IWB rig w/ mag attachment.

Found nothing yet in the way of a holster specifically for the 709. There's a fairly large fun-show at Tulsa on the 22nd and I'll probably try to see whats available there. I'd be interested to to see what you come up with on the Kydex.

pktrkt- Thanks for the pics! Ive been searching high and low for a small pocket sized 9mm with a manual saftey. My search has been pretty much futile, only the Rohrborough 9mm and the SCCY have them.I cant afford one and the other doesnt impress me.
Ive seen the 709 in person but i always thought the PF9 was alot smaller, but the pics prove that wrong.
Im a Taurus guy anyhow so i may as well buy another one and have 3 total.

http://www.kholster.com/ is making a IWB tuckable holster for the 709.
I use one for my PT745 and it works great.

Holster blanks would ahve just gone out to the holster makers and then production has to get going.

The PT709 is that new so there may be a holster shortage for a while.

Production of such things never moves at light speed.

Taurus is not making them like they used to. They are having some serious quality problems with their newer models.

My son just bought a small PT 145 Pro in .45 acp. Second trip to the range at 50 rounds, striker stopped working and small broken pieces fell out when he dropped the mag.

I had had a PT92 9mm for years and loved it. Kind of skttish now though.

I have a PT-709 and noticed a quality issue with the magazines. My two magazines are clearly different and not manufactured using the same manufacturing line, as the cutout that connects to the magazine release button is slightly different on each. When I manually lock back the slide, and look down at the follower of the magazine, the one that malfunctions the most is not even centered, so the rounds jam on the way to the chamber. The bad magazine also causes the slide not to lock back on the last shot. The other magazine is better, although not high quality. I would guess that the guns with the most issues, have bad magazines. And, I would guess that the magazines with followers centered behind the chamber would properly feed a round into the chamber. I sent the worst magazine back to Taurus and will report what they return to me.

taurus PT709

I did not know about this model until today while visiting my local range and shop. I held it and checked it over briefly and it seemed to be nice. I recently purchased a Taurus 24/7 and have put several hundred rounds through it, without a single problem. Based on my personal experience with Taurus, while it is limited, I would definitely be interested in the 709. However, since I am seeing some negative reviews from actual owners, I will hold off buying one for myself until I have done some research. The prices I saw were $423.95 for Black and $433.95 for Stainless slide. I will be looking at a local show this month to see if I can find one there.

I fired my friend's 709 to try out, and it convinced me to purchase one of my own. Taurus has become very good at making guns that consumers want to purchase in terms of features, function and price point. The 709 is a matter of setting your expectations to meet your necessity. That means if you are looking for a relatively cheap, functional pistol that is easy to conceal and carry, then the PT709 is for you. It combines a lot of features of a Glock with the addition of a manual safety. It beats most pocket pistols in that it can fire +P 9mm rounds, and chambers about anything without many misfires.

The problems that I have found include:
1. Difficult recoil due to the light weight and corresponding follow up shots
2. Difficulty in weapon take down and assembly (this would like be fixed with more practice)
3. Lack of capability to purchase additional magazines. I like to have more mags for the range whether I would ever carry them or not
4. Lack of choice in weapon specific holsters; be patient, and they will appear

What I like:
1. Price: I picked mine up for $350 (which is the standard Academy price), but expect to pay more in the $370-$440 at most private guns shops.
2. Function: I am familiar with Taurus products and service, and they are hard to beat since Taurus is a responsive manufacturer.
3. Ability to Carry: I usually carry a Ruger LCP in the summer. The PT709 give me an option for when I wear shorts and a tshirt in something larger than a .380. It doesn't print due to its 'slim' size.
4. Function: The PT709 can hold 7+1 rounds, and cycles about anything I have put through it (including Winchester FMJ & JHP, Golden Sabers, Hydrashock HST JHP, and Remington UMC FMJ).

I will admit that accuracy is not match grade, but once again I am not taking it to a match. I have found that it fits well in a Uncle Mikes pocket holster size 16.

I just picked one up about two weeks ago. I have already placed about a 150 rounds down range with no FTF or anyother issues. The only thing I would change if I could would be the trigger pull lenth. I am sure it has to do with the fact I have really big hands, but it is not 100 percent comfortable. Anyways, it has replaced my Glock 19 as my primary CCW. I paid 379.99 for the SS model.

#1 is unavoidable with the light weight. It's much much much much better than the Kel-tec in this regard and the Kel-tec tears you hand up in the process.

#2 My complaint too.

#3 and #4 should work themselves out as the 709 is brand new. Build it and they will come.

"1. Difficult recoil due to the light weight and corresponding follow up shots"

.... I find the recoil very manageable and quite entertaining. It doesn't hurt and my particular hand likes it. Totally a different feel than the recoil from my 642 for example. You'll shoot it a few more times and won't think twice about it.

Not sure I'd describe it as 'entertaining', but the felt recoil isn't much of an issue for me either. The take-down issue is resolved with practice. The lack of magazines, etc. is something we 'early subscribers' will have to deal with for a while. Overall, I'm quite happy with my 709.

I like the gun... the size it good... the trigger is better than comparable guns, and with the new Glock style take down, one can no longer complain about their older more 1911 style take down... I am pretty impressed with the gun overall.... it is definitely on my maybe list... I could use a good compact carry gun.

Mine blew up!

I bought mine in late august for under $400, took it to the department range and loaded up the magazine w/ our duty 9mm Winchester 115gr +P+ LE only.

On the 6th round I felt my hand sting tried pullin the trigger again, got nothing brought the gun up for tap/rack/bang and what do I see, but the frame exploded on both sides right below where it meets the slide.

I or no one else at the range were injured thats the good news.

Taurus sent Fed Ex to the PD to pick up the gun, I was told the repair/replacement would be expidited because I am LEO intending on using the gun as a BUG.

I shipped it out near the end of august, they received it on 09/01/09, I finally called them on 10/01/09 and was told the gun was "under review" I calmly voiced my irritations at the lack of communication and got the requisite "Im sorry sir".

I received a call back two hours later and was told I would be receiving a brand new gun.

I liked the feel of the gun and the 1st 5 rounds felt good, but I dont know whether to shoot the new gun and risk it blowing up again, or sell it right away as "never been fired".

I have no choice in the type of ammo I can use as dept policy dictates what we shoot. Nothing in Taurus's literature prohibits the use of +p+ rated ammo

What do I do, try again and maybe I just got a bad one, or start looking at a Kahr?

Taurus customer service told me point blank that the 709 is NOT rated for even +P ammunition. The owners manual says 'Always use ammunition that complies with the industry performance standards established by SAAMI...'. As far as I know, there is no SAAMI standard for +P+ 9mm. If I was REQUIRED to use only +P+ in a duty pistol, I would not have a 709. YMMV.

Regarding PT709

As I wrote in another thread / post, I traded a Taurus Mill-Pro 9mm for a PT709. The Mill-Pro was a good pistol - and (as I understand) rated for most of the plus-ammo. Possibly due to the heavier machining.
However, the magazine release was scary-sensitive, with no spring-push-eject; and the magazine had a bad habit of just dropping out while shooting!
I traded it at a GS for the 709. Since then, my wife and I have put over a couple-hundred rounds of Winchester, Federal, Monarch 115gr fmj through it, mixed with a box of Win. 147gr JHP-PP. No problems. Wife liked it well enough to take it for her own.
Point is, I think the 709 is an ample carry weapon for regulars; maybe not hardy enough for LE.
IMHO: You might consider the Walther PPS; I now carry the .40cal daily. Excellent as a CCW.
Best to all...

I guess Im sellin it then, too bad it seems like a good design, just not "patrolman proof"...its hard these days to find slim single stack autos. does anyone know if Kahr's can handle the hot stuff.

My PD allows 9mm, 40, 357sig, 45 & 10mm as well as 357mag (only 1 guy left usin a wheel gun) all of our ammo is the hottest Winchester Ranger stuff except for the 10mm, there we use the full power 175gr silvertips

looking for lightweight, and slim...

Oh yea BTW anyone want a brand new unfired PT709? Il make u a sweet deal

I've had 2 Kel-tecs and a Kahr. Got rid of all 3 of those cause they just were not dependable. The Kahr and 1 kel-tec went back to factory. The Kahr with some improvement and the Kel-tec with none. Last week I bought a PT709 @ academy for $349. First time at the range yesterday, fired 100 rounds of American Eagle FMJ. Brought it home, cleaned it. Took it back today for another 100 rds. of Remington FMJ. No problems at all. I can attest I never ran more than 50 rds thru the Kel-tecs or the Kahr without feeding problems or misfires. The Taurus is very easy Breakdown for cleaning pretty much like a Glock. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the adj. sights zeroed in but that's probably more my fault than the guns. The recoil doesn't bother me. So far I'm thinking I've finally found a concealable gun, that's dependable and for a great price. I have paid much more for guns that I don't have this much confidence in.

I love my 709. I love the recoil and it's pretty accurate. its very fun to shoot. Mine had to go back to service, but it's 100 percent now. Probably 500 perfect rounds since i got it back. It's a great pistol, perfect size and very easy to shoot and hold.

ahpd1992. I believe that Taurus literature does mention that +p+ would not be supported as it's not a standard load and they really don't want you shooting a lot of +p in the little thing. I've shot some in mine, and it went well. You should not should not shoot +P+ in your 709 by any means. I have a Kahr E9 and PM9 and would only shoot one or two of those in those pistols. A few extra pounds of pressure and work miracles of destruction on probably 80 percent of the barrels and other internals of most guns out there especially if you shoot them exclusively.
