A neighbor really wants a Taurus tracker in 44 magnum. I've looked at one in a local store and they appear to be well made and have a nice feel to the trigger. Does anyone know if these guns are reliable? Do they experience any more or less problems than other 44 mag revolvers?

I have the Taurus M-44, 6-inch barrel. It isn't a Tracker, but it is a Taurus. I absolutely love it. Trigger-wise, it is comparable to my S&W 629. Reliability? 100%. Blued finish? 100%. Well-made, well-fitted? 100% satisfaction.

Thanks! In looking at the Taurus site, I think that's the one he wants in a 4 inch. The Tracker only hold 5 rounds and it's got those ports - which I'm not a fan of for low light/darkness use.

Taurus has had reliability / QC issues in the past. You will hear complaints about them from some people who were burned by them. You'll also hear complaints from people parroting what they've read / heard. Me, I own 3 Taurus revolvers and have no problems with them. The oldest of them does have a pretty rough DA trigger. The newer ones are quite good.

I am running 50/50 on the Taurus revos. My 650 CIA needs to go back for warranty work and my old, now my brothers, 85 is %100.

I would buy one again just to see if the 85 or the 650 is a fluke.

I handle Taurus, S&W, and Ruger revolvers everyday at work, I also own a couple of each. I feel Taurus has come along way in the past 10 years and they are very worthy guns.
All manufaturers go through QC problems at times. I have heard the horror stories about Taurus revolvers but have yet to see any, in fact we get more warranty returns on S&W than any other brand, yet we sell far more Taurus.

Owned two of 'em....no problems

I've owned a Taurus M85 ultralite .38spcl and a mod 605 in .357 mag. The fit and finish on each was superb. Both had good triggers, good accuracy, and 100% reliable. Couldn't ask for more.

Availability of rare Taurus M85 total titanium ??

Taurus used to make their M85 .38 spcl in total titanium. This particular model weighed in at a scant 13.5 oz and had a flush bobbed hammer. (not an enclosed hammer) The finish was natural aluminum and titanium. I believe it could be ordered with a ported barrel.

Looking at the current Taurus USA site does not show this lightweight model anymore. Wish I could find the actual model number. Most of their .38 spcls are quite a bit heavier than the one in question.

Anyone have one or remember this type?

Thanks.....

Gambling

Depends on whether you want to gamble on QC and Taurus' ability to fix what goes wrong. I don't.

Another consideration: The Taurus guns may not hold their value if you want to resell them.

Five to six years ago I really questioned owning a Taurus but I find myself looking upon them favorably today. Tough to beat they're value. I still like Ruger most for 44Mag revolvers.

I have to say that I like my Taurus 450. I've carried it every day for 3-4 years now and while the trigger still feels just a bit 'gritty', I haven't put that many rounds through it. 100% realiable....

22luvr: Yup, just sold an 85 ultre lite titanium to a buddy for what I had in it ($200). Did you have a particular question about it that you wanted answered?

I like the innovation Taurus is doing. I just purchased a snubby 45 ACP. It had an 80% failure to fire rate. The dealer got a new one from the distributor. It shoots fine- good accuracy – but < 50 % of JHP’s will fully enter the chambers. The throats are too tight.

I’m still debating what to do with it. Taurus still has quality problems. When I called Taurus customer service the line picked up and I could hear people talking. The heavily accented guy that eventually acknowledged my presence was busy complaining to his co-worker about Millenniums.
