This is part 3 of my experiences with Taurus and their Model 941 22 Magnum revolver. To briefly summarize my previous posts briefly in April, 2013 I purchased a Taurus Model 941 8 shot 22 Magnum revolver for my wife as a birthday present (RELAX everyone. I paid for it myself and she is most definitely NOT a prohibited person). The gun would not group Speer Gold Dot 40 GR. GDHP-SB’s, throwing them all over the target with many keyholing. I returned the gun to Taurus which they promptly replaced with a new one.

Now to the replacement gun. When I got the replacement gun in May, 2013 the Banic of 2013 was in full swing and Speer and Hornady ammunition designed especially for use in short barrel revolvers were unavailable. All I was able to buy was CCI Maxi-Max 40 gr. TMJ and Winchester Dynapoint 45 gr. Hollow Point Copper Plated. The gun is very accurate with CCI Maxi-Max and dislikes Winchester Dynapoints. The main drawback is fired CCI Maxi-Maxs are hard to eject. This isn’t an issue for me as this type of gun isn’t going to be speed loaded and the Maxi-Max is a rifle round rated at 1,875 fps. (Sticking pressure is usually a sign of too high of pressure). For more information click on the link at the bottom of the post.

Taurus poor quality control showed it’s ugly head when I took the sideplate off to clean and inspect the internals. There was a 1/2” long burr of metal on the inside edge of the bottom of the sideplate rubbing against the trigger. Two file strokes and I removed the entire piece with the blade of my pocket knife. Very easy, quick fix but come on, there isn’t any excuse for this type of problem.

Also in my previous post I commented on the lack of oil inside the action which caused problems until I oiled with a few drops of Breakfree.

The other day a LGS finally got Speer Gold Dot 40 GR. GDHP-SB in and I brought two boxes for $19.00 each (CHOKE!). But I finally had the right ammunition for my little revolver. Today we took advantage of the weather and I tested the gun with the Speer Gold Dots. All I can say is the gun and ammunition shoot GREAT together. The fired brass ejected easily and fired the first time.

I have photos of the test target but I can no longer download pictures onto Photobucket. All the shooting was done free-standing two hand hold at seven long paces (7 yards +). I shot the first 8 rounds single action to get a feel of the gun. I then fired the second cylinder double action. All eight rounds hit the middle of the target in a 1 1/4" group. This group is smaller than the factory test target group of 1 3/4". This gun loves Speer Gold Dots. Altogether I shot a total of 42 rounds saving 8 for S.D.

OK, final judgement. It’s a keeper. Initial problems with the gun were a lack of oil in the action and the internal burr rubbing on the trigger. Borh minor issues for me but they should not have slipped by the inspectors. None the less the over quality is very high. Overall fit and finish are excellent. The bluing on the front of the muzzle was thin and uneven. Maybe the barrel was crowned after the gun was blued and then poorly cold blued? I removed the bluing with a lead away cloth and reblued it with Oxpho-Blue. Sights are easy for my old eyes to pick up. Recoil…what recoil? Trigger pull is heavy but is about the same as my 20 year old Taurus M-85. I am going to try a Wolff spring kit and /or clipping a coil or two off of the factory mainspring. Hoster(s) are a bit of added expense as the ones I have for the M-85 won’t work because of the tall front sight on the 941. I am going to check out a paddle holster the LGS has in stock as a paddle holster makes it easy to slip on and off.

As the Banic recedes I plan on getting some Hornady ammo for testing also and stockpile some Speer Gold Dots when the price get more reasonable (I have a 1,000 rounds on backorder. Like I said this gun loves Speer Gold Dots). This gun is going to see a lot of use here on the farm.

Thank you for the update. Your review of your experience seems to contain no bashing, nor any undue praise. As one of the major news networks likes to say, "fair and balanced".

I have to say, your experience coincides with mine. Overall, very nice guns and pretty decent customer service. Factory quality control could maybe use some attention. I suppose the bottom line is that I would buy another Taurus.
