I need help deciding: I read good and bad about Taurus guns, it runs about half & half. I'm going to narrow it down to a specific revolver - any one here owns an "ultra lite" 2", .22 Magnum 941SS2UL? I'm thinking about buying one. I normally go the S&W way, but their new .22 Magnum, 351PD will cost nearly $200 more than the Taurus. Any information/advice is appreciated. Thanks, Pete (The Oldfella)

I don't own a Taurus but I have been looking at their line up recently. They are certainly offering a lot of models and a lot of variations. I give them credit for that. Various postings have suggested that their quality has been increasing and maybe customer service also.

I find myself thinking that if they offered a gun that the other manufactures didn't then I would take a chance. I don't think I would go with Taurus if I could buy a similar S&W or Ruger.

My experience is that guns need service from time to time and many times the service is needed right out of the box. That has happened to me with S&W's and Rugers. The benefit of these two brands is that you deal with very decent people when it comes to customer service. They don't always get it right the first time but they try and satisfy the customer and usually they do it quickly. That is worth the extra price to me. Until Taurus's reputation for customer service improves I will pay the extra for a S&W or Ruger.

I don't have the particular model you are talking about, but I am very happy with my 85CH. I wasn't very happy with .357mag out of a small framed snub but the 605 I used to have was a very good gun. I was also very happy with the 82 I used to have. I was stupid, early on I didn't think I'd have many guns, the 82 was a .38spl, and when I bought my .357mag (a S&W 65LS) I sold the 82 since I didn't think I still needed a .38spl- so I sold it, but not because of any problems, only because I was being an idiot who thought I'd only own 2-4 guns :banghead:

When the first Taurus Trackers came out I bought a 627 SS and had problems with the chambers and the cylinder sticking. Ended up selling it. Recently, I bought another new 627 SS and it has been flawless with none of the issues in the orginal.

I also own S&W 317 Kit gun which went back to S&W because of "balloned" chambers. The cylinder was replaced and it has run fine ever since.

Thanks for the info - I guess there is a lemon in every batch. I too bought a new S&W M640, and went back because the trigger at times hesitated, did not complete the cycle; that's what I'm hearing, some bad, some good. One comment about the .22 Magnum as a self-defense gun brought a chuckle: "...better than a rock" (or better than nothing) - I don't happen to agree; sure, a .357 magnum is better, so is a .45, but if you can't carry them, for whatever reason, sitting at home won't do you any good when you are out and about. Thanks a bunch - stay safe, Pete (The Oldfella)

I've owned a couple of Taurus products over the years. I've noticed from them and what I've seen at the ranges are the steel revolvers seem to give the least troubles. The exotic alloys do ocasionally have problems, but that seems to be not just a Taurus problem.
Just my $0.02 opinion for what it's worth.

I have Two Taurus guns ... an M85 snub (VERY holster worn!!) and this M66 ... not in the category you refer to .... but it has been (so far) quite acceptable ... tho I must say ... inspection of the star machining leaves something to be desired. That said .. it performs well and .. out of the box, has a very ''Smith'' like feel .. smoother than I would have expected.

Just for completeness ... here is the dear ole M85 .. carried to the point of being, externally ... worn out! :p.

I recently purchased a 605. I am very happy with it. It is a great shooter with a nice trigger feel to it. No regrets whatsoever, and the price was right.

I would LOVE to own a 941UL, but alas, am suffering from Californitis. Not allowed here, sigh. I do have a 317 coming though (thanks Mr. Beretta!:D)

I saw pics of the new Smith 351, and was horrified by the fiber optic front sight. I know these work nicely, but to me it just appears to sit poised, ready for breakage.

BTW, did you see that Taurus introduced a fixed sight version of the 941 at this latest Shot Show. It hasn't shown up in their online catalog yet, so I am unsure as to whether or not it is a UL version. I would be very much surprised if it isn't UL.

I can only hope Taurus submits it for testing here in California :(

Well Pete...

I own three Tauri. Two .38 Specials and one .32 Mag. One .38 is a Total Ti and the other two are UL's. No malfunctions, no muss..no fuss. I like the triggers too. Really smooth. Taurus revolvers are getting better.

I own 5 Taurus wheel guns. All of them look, and have performed perfectly. No problems whatsoever. Next Taurus wheel gun is a 905 for me... :)

Top to bottom:
M85 Total Titanium
M85 Stainless, M85 Stainless
605 Stainless, M85 Ultralte Aluminum

Thanks for your comments, nice pictures too.
I am disappointed with Taurus- I called twice, left messages, no response, and the customer care people doesn't seem to care - not polite, not courteous... no email address, and no 800 number; and to top it all, they want you to pay for returning the gun if defective - and to get it back they will return it to an ffl, not directly to you. My dealings with S&W are quite different. Taurus lost a potential customer.

I've got a 627 Tracker, SS, 4". I thought I had a problem with cylinder lock ups and I sent it back after downloading their form. Received it back home within 3 weeks after they polished the trigger. No complaints with their warranty.

The actual problem turned out to be dirt getting between the ejector and cylinder. It was causing the ejector to lift off and interfere with the cycling. I've heard this is a common complaint with this model. As long as I keep it clean there it works fine.

It was their warranty and price that made me their customer. Next I'm looking at their PT92 0.40.

and to get it back they will return it to an ffl, not directly to you

The one time I sent a gun to Taurus to be repaired, they sent the gun directly back to me. Have they changed their process?

Chris

i have one!!!!!

well, its the stainless steel version.

snubbie .22magnum. its a nice little gun, though in the ultra lite configuration id would be even nicer im sure.

The only time that Taurus returns a gun to an FFL holder is if the gun was replaced and not repaired. The FFL then must go through the process of registering the new gun's serial number and etc.

I called Taurus yesterday in reference to my 970 Tracker breaking. Told them the firing pin spring is broke, the girl there said they would put one in the mail to me. I'm mostly bent that a little used gun broke to begin with and all the service in the world won't change that!
