Wanted to let everyone know that Taurus is selling the TCP 738 at a lower price right now.

I just picked up a Taurus 738 TCP 380 acp pocket pistol for $199 new from Sportsmans Wharehouse. Taurus is selling them with 1 mag and no zipper case at a lower price.

$213 OTD.

Already have a kel tec P3AT in 380 and did not really need this one, but for that price I figured I would pick it up. And I do have more than 1 pocket :lol4:

I really like reloading for 380s. It is very cheap with cast lead and is fairly quick to load on my turret press. Now adding this to my Kel Tec and my Makarov, I got 3 pistols in 380. Each one cost me $199 each.

Anyone got any experience on the Taurus TCP 738?

Sorry I meant to put this in the autoloader forum. Mods could you move it. Sorry about being a pain

As much as I despise the Taurus brand, I have to admit the price on one of these is too low to ignore. I've looked this gun over a few times and there are some things that I like about it:
1. Ergonomics. The gun fits well in the hand, better than the Ruger LCP and Kel-Tec P3AT (both guns that I have owned and carried).

2. Rounded edges. I like how Taurus actually got rid of any of the sharp edges you would normally find on these.

Here are some things that I dislike about it:

1. Reliability: the LGS near me had 10 of these, 5 were returned for shipment back to Taurus for a variety of problems. If I remember the breakout right, 2 had cracked slides and 3 had firing pin issues either due to light primer strikes or a broken firing pin.

2. The double strike "capability". I think this is more of a gripe about their advertising. If I get a misfire, the FIRST thing I am doing is the Tap Rack Bang Drill. Odds are if I pull the trigger again, I'll get the same "click".

However, for $191, this is DEFINITELY a gun to consider as a BUG, or something for the car / truck. You're also going to be covered under the Taurus Lifetime warranty too.

So why bother to put something out there?

Claiming that gun shop guns were all good or bad is irrelvant.

I can claim that I have gone to all the area gun shops around here and all the 738s are fine. I've actually done that up to a point , but not seen all the 738s. The ones I did see were fine and the store personnel at the gun shows had no reports of bad 738s they had seen themselves.

The data cannot be verified. Yours or mine.

ANYTHING can be claimed.
The purchaser can inpsect the gun closely inside or out before purchase.

Gun stores around here in the Milwaukee metro area actually rent the 738 for try out. It's sold a goodly number of them that way.

Give the OP and others actual owner experience. Anything else is just hearsay.

With that said I have heard good thing about this little gun "internet reviews", it would make a cheap leave in the truck/house and forget it gun for the price.

Thanks or all the comments guys, I am dying to get out and try it. I must admit it feels really good in the hand. Fits like a glove :)

Re: Taurus Vs. S&W

You'll note that tinygnat219 had a little bit of "trouble" remembering me there. Even though I had mentioned the forum I had dealt with him before on, RimFireCentral.com. Worse, in February, 2008, he hadn't owned any Taurus products before, and acted like he knew nothing about guns. Now, he's an expert. Seven bad guns in eight months. Amazing. Even the story has improved. THAT never was answered, either.

Over on 1911.com, JD8 is an expert drive-by commenter. I always respond, and, now, so are others. Telling him that his comments are wrong, insulting, and have no basis in fact. It seems that, after a few times, they no longer hold their "expert" status.

It is amazing the status given to some as "Taurus experts". They stop in at most if not all the Taurus threads and expound their mantra. Facts do not matter. There are some in the actual report for a change.

Why even give a report on a brand that they cannot stand?

I'm no expert and do not claim to be. I do know where the info on certain Taurus guns are and provide it. While I do not have extensive 738 experience I would rather give factual data on the actual model. I do have limited experience with this model and am trying to give the OP data right from the actual sources.

No more or less.

No. No one is in a snit.

Just pointing out there are also items that are irrelevant in the report and are.

That was explained and is fact.

Got a friend who just bought one and he paid more than $199 for his. :banghead:

We had it out to the range and he let me shoot it. I liked it. It is a smaller, easily concealable gun. I was surprised at how thin it was- perfect pocket gun for me. He carries it in a pocket holster.

We did have some feeding issues. He was just on his first 100 rounds so, we allowed that it might need some time to polish up some areas inside. It seemed to be getting better and, I noted that how I pulled the trigger seemed to help. If I deliberately pulled verrrrryyy slowly, it seemed to hang up more than if I pulled the trigger with a purpose. That's not particularly scientific, but ...

All in all, it was a snappy little thing. Not uncomfortable, just let's you know that there should be a hole in paper (or something VERY soon). :D

It always amazed me that if you need to tune-up a $200 gun, it's a piece of junk. If you need to do that to a $2000 dollar gun, it's a custom!

My .02, change given back only if accompanied by the rebate coupon and original purchase receipt.

I bought one a while back and it is easily concealed, reasonably accurate at close up distances and is kinda fun to shoot. As for rely-ability, I gave it a good fluff and buff before I shot it and have not had many problems. Here is mine....
