I am wanting to get a small carry pistol and was looking at the LCP, but then the Taurus TCP 738 caught my eye and I compared them at the gs. I like how the TCP feels and really noticed a difference in the trigger. The Taurus was smooth and broke cleanly, the LCP just seemed rough.

For those of you who have shot both, how do they compare? Specifically the TCP, I've read a lot about how much people like the LCP.

I am no fan of Taurus by any stretch. However, I have owned most of the little .380s on the market. My two favorite were the Taurus and the Kahr. The Taurus was a bit larger front to back in the grip and just fit my hand better. It was more accurate as well than the Ruger. This was a sided by side comparison, as I owned both at the time. It was a great little gun for the money, and I would do it again.

Give the Taurus a try mine has been great never had any failures of any kind . It has a better trigger than the ruger comes with 2 mags and the slide locks back on empty.

"How about you just skip the two junk guns altogether and get yourself a quality firearm from Glock, S&W, Sig, or CZ...." those are completely different platforms, not to mention the op asked about a taurus tcp or a ruger lcp. quit being ignorant and answer the mans question or dont say anything at all.

To the op, I have shot the lcp, honestly. I hate it. The trigger pull is stupidly long and as a small awkward gun it is pretty hard. Im not sure about the tcp, im looking at getting one next. i love the feel and trigger pull on it. Good luck

i am looking at getting a .380 myself. if it helps i have read alot of good things about the taurus tcp 738 online. i just need to find one and see how it feels in my hand. i have held the ruger and don't like the way it felt. good luck.

denalipark..your comment was no help.

Well in a few weeks, or months, or whenever they are discovered to not work properly, or not at all, I think you'll come to understand just which post in this thread gave you and the op the best advice....

LCP.. :D

I have NOT handled or fired the TCP, I'm sure it's a very good pistol.. But, it's made by TAURUS, that takes it off the table for me.

No offense to Tauri lovers.. We all have opinions, mine is no more valid that that of another person who might prefer Taurus firearms over those of Ruger.

I've owned Rugers of one description or another for over 4 decades, and so far, nary a bad one in the bunch. ;)

At present between my wife and myself we have three LCP's, one LC9, one Security-Six and one Single-Six Convertible in the house...

My wife carries a Taurus TCP and really likes it...

I do not carry the 380 but have shot hers several times and find it to be very reliable. I have been thinking about getting one for pocket backup to my Colt Magnum Carry.

My TCP Is more accurate and has a better trigger than my LCP or my P3AT. BUT it has some sharp edges and corners that make it print worse in some of my pockets.
The LCP was recalled, the TCP went back home for a small issue, the P3AT has never been out of my sight.

I went with the LCP, but both seem like fine guns. To my surprise, I actually shoot my LCP better than my LCR, and I'm generally a revolver guy:confused:

My wife has a LCP and I honestly think it is a very poorly built gun. With that said I'd take it over the TCP all day every day. If I were going to buy one I'd look at the KAHR P380 and the Sig P238. But of the two you asked about, get the LCP.

Deepsouth, what was it about the LCP that gave you the impression that it was poorly built.
Most owner reviews I have read are pretty positive about it.

I have had bad luck with Taurus - two out of three were unreliable. I have an LCP and carry it occasionally when the PM9 won't fit the situation, although I am no fan of the 380 round.

I vote TCP. The trigger and sights are better than my LCP. It locks back after the last round too.

I was in the same situation and I decided on the TCP. I have 100+ trouble-free reloads through mine and am still putting it through the paces. By the time WI has concealed carry in November, mine should be tested.

I got mine in stainless but there's a promo on the standard model at Davidsons for as low at $230 through the 21st. TCP

I love my TCP...

For reference... My primary carry is an XD9.

I have a S&W 442 that usually stays at home because it's my only wheel gun and the only one the misses is 100% confident she can aim and shoot without having to "think" too much.

If I don't carry the XD... I carry the Taurus.

I chose the Taurus over the Ruger primarily because I liked the stainless slide and the "lock back" function after the last round.

I've shot about 250 rounds and had zero failures with HP self defense rounds, and Winchester FMJ.

My XD9, AK, and MkII get most of the range time.

My 442 and TCP usually get 20-40 rounds at the end. I consistently shoot the TCP better than my 442, it's lighter, slimmer, and more accurate (at least in my amateur hands), and each time I shoot it I am more confident in it's reliability. I also take it apart and lube it after every session.

I've got 'em both and find both pistols to be very reliable. I like the TCP's hold back feature but also like the LCP's long pull DAO which obviates the need for a safety. I feel somewhat safer carrying the LCP with one in the spout because it's nearly impossible to inadvertently pull the trigger. The long pull isn't a detriment to accuracy either. I can put all seven rounds into a 9' paper plate at 50' which is plenty good for what this gun is designed to be used for. I can get slightly smaller groups with the TCP but don't feel as comfortable pocket carrying with a round in the chamber. Both pistols work well for me with most varieties of commercial ammo and my handloads. Both pistols have had around 600+ rounds through them at my local gun club indoor range and have been very reliable. I haven't had any problems with the three Taurus pistols (TCP, 740 .40s&w Slim, .45 24/7 PRO DS) I own or the two Rugers (LCP, SR9). I've owned a couple Taurus revolvers in the past and didn't have any problems with them either. I don't think you can go wrong with either of these .380s. They are ideal carry in hot summer weather when wearing shorts. Don't kid yourself a .380+P load ain't a puny round.
