I want to add two more handguns to my collection....a 1911 and a full size 9mm.
I'm not sure excactly what I want but as usual cost is important. Since I've been more than happy with my EDC Taurus PT709 Slim, I satrted looking at and researching the Taurus lineup. They have two pistols that really caught my eye, the PT92 and the PT1911...Both seem like excellent values(especially the 1911) from what I can find are reliable and well built.
Let me have it..What's your opinion?

What's your opinion?

The PT92 is Taurus' oldest model in their line up. Generally reliable but still a Taurus. It's either going to be the best gun you buy or the worst depending on your luck of the draw.

As far as the 1911 goes, unless the Taurus has something you're looking for other than the Taurus name I'd recommend looking at the Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911. I think it's a better value and a better built gun than the Taurus for less money.

I do not own a Taurus but everyone I know that does is very happy with it.

The PT92, In the early 80's Berretta was making the Model 92 in brazil. When they stopped Taurus bought the factory and continued making (licensed to) as the PT92. As time went by they updated it and improved manufacturing. So I am making the assumtion it is a quality gun. And again I know people who own them and love them.

magazines are interchangable, so thats another plus.

I know a couple that own the 1911 and are very happy.

So....speaking with people who shoot them, I have only heard good things.

I own a Ruger SR9, super happy with it, and 2 Springfield 1911's that I have had for 10 years. very happy.
Also look at the XDm, 19+1 just to piss off the anti gun crowd. (carrying 20 rounds in the gun and 1 back up magazine for 39 rounds..mmmmm)

PT92 is probably Taurus' best semi-auto. The 1911 is good if you get current production (i.e. last couple of years) and not used or new-old-stock. BTW, I too would recommend a RIA for a 1911 - not as pretty but consistent quality.

My PT92 is approaching 30 years old. It's a pre-decocker version, and has well over 20k rounds through it. The ONLY replacement parts have been recoil springs.

I have a PT1911, blue, that I bought in 2009. Again, it's proven trouble-free.

I also own a PT101 (40 S&W), a PT58 (.380 ACP), and a PT22. No trouble out of any of them. :)

Careful with anything made by Taurus. Their Q/C is very spotty and their CS, should you need it, terrible.

I speak from personal experience and will never own another Taurus product.

Hope your luck is better.

The Taurus lovers will hate me - as a self avowed Taurus hater... But I wouldn't buy another Taurus again. God help you if you need service.

Anyway - here are some links for you to read before you buy one:

I know more taurus 1911 owners that have less problems than do Kimber owners. Shot a couple. They are GREAT rack grade 1911s. You might get lucky and get a Kimber that runs as good and is twice as accurate, but the Taurus is more likely to run than a Kimber. This is based on what I have seen from people I know that own them both.

If I were to have to pick a Beretta 92 or a Taurus PT92, not having to pay a cent. I would take the PT92.

Just my opinion. Nothing more!!

For the sake of argument the other 1911's I've been considering are: Auto-Ordnance 1911A1, Para GI Expert ESP and RIA 1911 Tactical.
As for a 9mm...Glock 19 gen4 and CZ 75

20 round magazine for the 92

Yes, I have a 20 rounder. But, you can get flush fitting 17 round factory mags too.

I personally don't care for Para 1911s too much. But their new GI model seems to be VERY accurate (especially for such a low end 1911), and I have heard good things about it. I'd personally buy that over the RIA or Auto Ordinance.

I'd say - get a Springfield Mil Spec, though, if you want a 1911.

Um... A Glock 19 and a Taurus PT92 aren't in the same class. The Glock will get picked every time by me, although not necessarily the 4th gen. The RIA 1911 Tactical would also be picked over the Taurus 1911.

If your talking size.....I know its odd but I never liked the feel of standard size Glocks 17/22/20 etc...Stepping down to the compacts is a whole lot better fit for me.
First, I want to concentrate on getting a good 1911 for under $600...

btw: thanks for all the input on this :)

For me a "good" 1911 has night sights and a beavertail grip safety. The 1911 you are considering has one of these options; by the time you buy the sights and have them installed you're going to be over the $700 mark.

I understand cost being a consideration, but looks like you are trying to get two pistols in a short period of time. Why not spring a little extra on whatever you get first and get something that has a reputation for trouble free ownership and doesn't need any additions? Another $150 can make a "step up" and may not require after the purchase service. Save up a little then get pistol #2.

I know from experience, if I purchase something and am not subsequently satisfied the loss I take selling / trading the now used pistol would have allowed me to get something a little better in the first place.

I recently bought a new Kimber Ultra Carry for $820 + tax and it had factory night sights, beavertail grip safety. May not be the model you would want, but gives you an idea of what you might find for a little more than your initial price point.

Good luck.

RIA Tactical is a much better gun than the PT1911. I'd go with a Springfrield Mil-spec, used Kimber, used STI, etc. before the Taurus also.
The PT92 is a great great gun IMO. Over 10000 rounds in mine without a single problem.

I can not speak for the models you are looking at. However, I have owned a taurus .38spl and it served me trouble free for over 500 rounds. I had to sell it to cover some bills. Now I wish I had let the bills go late.

In American Rifleman they tested a whole group of compact .380s. They had the LCP, Walther PK380, Magnum Research, Kel Tec and several others. The only one that malfunctioned less than the Taurus TCP was a Rohrbaugh that cost around $1,000. Even the Kahr (a gun everybody swears is perfectly reliable) malfunctioned.
There were several malfunctions—usually failures to chamber.

My point is that Taurus is not the horrible gun or company that so many people paint it to be. I've known people that had to send back their Rugers, Walthers, and Springfields. All companys let a bad one slide through from time to time. Sometimes it isn't even the company's fault. Sometimes a part supplier makes a mistake.

I would buy a Taurus in complete confidence.

I would go with the RIA Tactical 1911 or a Springfield Mil-Spec or even the Springfield G.I. if your really wanting to save a few extra $$. I have had a few Taurus handguns and they were all trouble free, but I have a few friends who have not been so fortunate.

i have an auto-ordnance ww2 model, great shooter, auto-ord takes a beating online, but really this piece is one of my best

If youre open to other manufacturers big on value, you may want to look at the Ruger P89 and P90. Tank-like construction that will provide years of reliable service without breaking the bank.

I would also go with the RIA M1911 Tactical over the Taurus M1911. I've worked on a friends RIA M1911 and was very impressed with the overall build quality, fit and finish, and materials used in its construction.

The PT-92 I had was a very dependable and consistent performer. Accuracy was decent enough with fixed sights. Fit and finish were also very good.

Really....I started looking at these after how impressed I am with the AO M1 Carbine I recently bought and that I like too match ;) .
What I read up on the AO 1911 all seemed good(or great)...My only problem is, it is a very basic 1911, for the same price the other 1911s, especially Taurus offer a lot more.
