With all the talk about non lethal methods of protection from bears, Pepper spray, etc.. How long before PETA starts telling hikers to carry tazers?

I personally prefer my tazer in 12 gauge.

DM

By the way, will it work on zombies as well?

Yeah, it's a holiday, my grandkids left and I am a little burned out from their visit and a little down at their absence.

I work at a zoo and we keep an 870 loaded with slugs in the staff building for emergencies. After working with both grizz and black bears, I wouldn't feel safe with anything less than my ol' M79 bloop gun. No feces....

Rodney King was tasered twice and pulled the darts out before continuing his attack.

Course that's not in the video.

Bottom line is... don't think I'd want to be anywhere near a tasered bear!

Using a tazer on a bear may be one of the absolute worst ideas I've ever heard. The mind boggles... Why not just poke it in the eye with a sharp stick?

They do make a Taser for large animals. However, I get the idea it is for temporarily incapacitating animals that are either in captivity or about to be captured. This implies that there are additional resources in place to restrain the animal while it is stunned. You don't have that in the wild.

Every video I have seen of this involves the animal getting up immediately and being exceedingly angry. Yeah. I'm not using that option. If he wasn't trying to kill you before, he is now.

There's an old saying: "when grabbing the bull by the horns, have a plan for letting go." Well, the Taser only cycles for a few seconds. "Letting go" is going to happen in a few seconds. How much of a head start can you possibly get? Not nearly enough.

I suppose a mad-scientist-researching-things-man-was-not-meant-to-know quality Tesla coil could count as a taser, but that sort of toy isn't exactly portable. Bears have so much greater mass, and respond to stimuli so differently than do Homo Sapien that you'd need to hit the bear with so much oomf that you run the risk (if that's a concern) of electrocuting the bear.

Personally, I prefer .50 BMG but it's all a matter of taste.

PS, bears do not make good attack animals. I tried training 'em to eat officers. All they tended to do was lick hands and mildly headbutt the legs in hopes of being petted. Sigh.

Tazering a bear sounds like an expensive and painful way to commit suicide.

Wow! I wonder if the bear would get that nasty coppery taste in it's mouth like we get from putting a transistor battery on the tounge our would the taste of the Taser weilder cover it up? :what:

Hey guys, knock it off!

I'm pretty sure tasering would work on bears, I seen it used in Jurassic Park! :neener:

Not to long ago, probably in Florida, a zoo tiger was tazered.
I think the effects lasted about 6 seconds

Just for the record, that was with an earlier form of the Tazer. The M-26 and X-26 models are much more effective.

Not that I'd consider using one on a Griz in the wild. That has to rank right up there with the all-time bad ideas of history! :what:

True, but Taser still has failures in the field, on much smaller, thinner skinned targets....

:cuss: peta wom't aprove of tazering bears or any other animal(except humans). It might hurt the animal! :barf: :cuss:

Knowing PETA,

I'd be willing to bet that they suggest that you coat yourself with some Insanity sauce or something equal (or higher,) on the scoville scale, in the hopes that you'd smell too spicy for the bear.

Tasering a bear is like tapdancing on a minefield.

Kingpin...

That bull got up way, way too fast for my taste.

When I'm in the woods, I carry a large, raw salmon and a atlatl. If Mr. Bear shows up, I put the salmon in the atlatl, and throw it way on the other side of Mr. Bear.

I then move very, very quickly away from Mr. Bear.

For those who do not share my sense of humor, that was a joke. Just stay away from Mr. Bear. Stay away from Mrs. Bear, too.

LOL Kingpin

Thanks for the video Kingpin. Tazer does work in that case, but I guess suggested improvements would include a BIGGER battery, and a lockdown position for the trigger that would not require the shooter to be there to keep the current flowing. Then you send some Peta people over to release the bear or other large animal.
