I wanted to give a review of my new TC Compass rifle made by Smith and Wesson. I had been eyeing budget rifles for a while. I had looked at the Ruger American, Rem 783, and the Compass. Although the overall lines of the stock, and execution of the mag were in favor of the American, I decided to try the Compass. The comb of the stock is just a little fatter and felt better to me. The one I have is in .243 Win and cost $387 OTD locally.
It is pillar bed, free floated, and has 5R rifling. The muzzle comes threaded with a knurled thread protector. 4 rounds fit in the box mag.
It comes with bases installed and steel swivel studs. The stock has a nice 1" recoil pad.
The barreled action has laser etched markings, which add class. I had first seen these on Walther pistols, years ago.
It states that the trigger is adjustable, and while this is somewhat true, dont expect to get it down to 2lb without disassembly and spring work. However after following supplied i structions, and tinkering, I was able to achieve an acceptably, creep free trigger.
I mounted a VX3i 3-10X scope in Weaver Grand Slam steel rings (keeping with the theme of economy and using what you have).

At the range this rifle strutted its stuff. I only tried one random handload consisting of 90 gr. Nosler BT and Win 760. Sight-in groups were very close to 1" at 100m. I think it shot better at 200 where three shots at a gong just looked like a silver dollar in the scope. Definitely a keeper!

Excellent, I have been looking at these myself. Haven't found too many reviews yet, good to hear yours is a shooter. They are running slightly cheaper than the Ruger Americans here locally.

IME S&W has been putting out some good 5R barrels lately. My MP 10 is also a tack driver.

Noticeably absent are the ubiquitous budget gun barrel nut and accu trig knock off. Kind of refreshing.

If my memory serves me correctly I believe the barrels (S&W) are made by Howa, which also makes the barrels for the Weatherby Vanguard, which is regarded as a very decent rifle.

Had a blast today with the Compass rifle. Took my 9 yr. old to the range and set up some plastic coke bottles at 200 yd. With the VX3i scope set on 8X he really nailed them. Those fizzy pops really explode when when you nail them with a 90 gr. Nosler ballistic tip out of a 243! I think one went a good 12 feet in the air. Fun times and a great shooting gun (and kid).

If that is true.. ok, certain parts of the scope are likely Japanese too, hard to get away from these days.

One thing to keep in mind about the Compass, it is not the lightest rifle out there. Inexpensive, yes. Very good trigger, good to very good shooter, smooth cycling... yeah. But not a lightweight.

My last S&W bolt was a model called the I-bolt. Remember those?

I had to send it back to them due to a chamber issue. In Very short order S&W discontinued the rifle altogether. They never sent me my rifle, but did send me acheck for full retail value of the gun. Amusing the way that all worked out...

Anyway I do like this current Compass model.
