Teach a kid: right-handed, left-eye dominant

I'm left eye dominant right handed. I Didn't know about the left eye thing until my early 20s. But when I got my Red Ryder BB gun at age 8 I just naturally fired it left handed and my dad didn't say anything as I was hitting everything I aimed at. Been shooting lefty ever since.

Biggest problems are having to have those flimsy ambi-safeties fitted to my 1911 and trying to find affordable, short action rifles. If you like Glocks and leveractions, it's not a problem at all.

So naturally, when he grabs a rifle and aims, he puts the stock to his left shoulder, aims with his left eye; but holds his right-hand on the trigger/handle, and the left arm extended. This is his intuitive stance.

I don't think it's a good idea to do that, it can be even dangerous too especially if he's shooting at a moving target.

I too am right handed and left eye dominant. With pistols, I don't have problem shooting right handed since I just lean my head abit more to the right side and aim with my left eye. Ofcourse, I only shoot with both my eyes opened. Now with long guns, I do have problems. I tried left handed but I can't seem to hit anything this way since it felt completely awkward for me. So I forced myself to shoot right handed and with my right eye. After some time at the range, I can say that I'm doing just find shooting right handed with a left eye dominance.

Personally I think it's better to retrain your eye than your body. And since your kid is still young.

Cpileri;

My daughter is naturally right handed & always shot from the right shoulder. Her accuracy was quite good, but not national level. Just for grins, several years ago, we did the eye-dominance test. Whoa!! She's left eye dominant.

So, she switched. Once the initial familiarization period passed, her accuracy improved about a solid 10%. Therefore, from personal experience, I feel that ACP is all wet in his opinion. Shoot the dominant eye. All of us can shoot off either shoulder, but accuracy always follows shooting with the dominant eye.
