Hey everybody. This is something I think everybody should know about it. One small step for man, One giant leap for the 2nd Ammendment!

A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

I think that this is a big step for our country to be able to work towards maintaining a safe school environment not only for our kids but for those of us in colleges and universities. Hopefully this will be the first step of many towards preventing events such as the Virginia Tech massacre.

I myself am a college student AND I have a 6 year old son. I also dont feel comfortable or confident with the minimal security that schools currently have. I have 7 years in the Army as a Ranger and Im confident in my abilities in Self Defense (Armed and Unarmed). I dont think that Concealed Carry should be granted to just ANYONE in schools. But I do think it should be allowed with extensive training before you are granted the "priviledged right". As well, I think that once you are granted such priviledges, you should still be required to perform monthly or quarterly training at a minimum so as to maintain proficiency.

What do you guys/gals think?

Well keep in mind this is just one small school district.

The entire states of Utah and (I believe) California already have unrestricted carry in schools for permit holders. Seems like there was one or two others as well but I can't remember at the moment.

It's not going to rock the world that much, but it's progress.

California allows legal carry on campus? There's a small hope for that state yet.

This is a glass half full / glass half empty thing.

They're allowed to carry there because it has not been brought to the attention of the legislature that there is a hole in their law. If the issue was ever raised, it would be quickly revised "to protect our children".:barf:

The current law should not be mistaken as an example of CA demonstrating any semblance of forward thinking with respect to self defense, but merely a lapse when they codified their carry constraints.

California has fewer restrictions on where you can carry concealed than just about any place I've heard of.
I've seen many California posters on here claim they can CCW in schools though I haven't looked it up myself.

The problem of course is getting a California permit in the first place.

As a future father in a few weeks and a proud member of the state of Texas I would just like to say that I am behind this 100%. I think that once this law happens to other schools in bigger cities like Austin where my child will eventually go to school It will be a vary good thing.

Im currently in Miami. Obviously a BIG city. Im hoping that this idea will soon spread over my way. I dont feel comfortable with the security that my school has. My son lives in Kentucky with his mom, and I would feel way more comfortable if the teachers at his school were allowed to carry.

I don't know about CA, but in UT I believe that only applies to public Universities... not grade schools.

Id like to know how it stands in CA. As far as UT, public universities is a start. Certainly much better than it is here in Florida.

California CCW issue is so pathetically small it's a non issue
I understand what you mean. It may be small but its definitely a start. Hopefully it will grow and spread to not only the rest of the state but also the rest of the country

Technically, the law doesn't prohibit it. But sheriffs can place their own restrictions on a permit, and colleges can have their own no-guns policies, with the threat of expulsion.

And good luck getting a permit.

One Small Step

As my username implies, I am a teacher, a special education teacher to be more precise. I think that this is a very bold move for the TX school district, and I applaud them. That is one of the fine points of having a small school district that can implement programs such as this. I only wish that the ultra liberal school district where I am at would get on this bandwagon. I teach in Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. We are the 5th largest school district in the country with just a smidge over 310,000 students. At the school in which I teach we had, as of count day last year, 3,589 student. Many are gang bangers and other hoodlums that could and would do a great deal of harm. I teach students with profound mental retardation which includes students with Down Syndrome, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Fetal Substance Delay Syndrome(s). I teach the most vulnerable group of students and the two school police that are on campus are not enough to protect anyone, and frequently the are proven to be incapable, as police are not there to stop crime, only find out who committed it. Last year we had several lockdowns due to guns on campus, or shootings that were near enough campus to warrant a lock down. It was routine for the classroom aides to leave during these lockdowns and go get bagels from Einstien's Bagels and return to class. If one of our school aides could figure this out, so could some DB (Dirt Bag) BG (Bad Guy). In some of the many cases in which gang fights happened on campus I was totally defenceless to protect my students. I have been threatened to be killed by students and student's families, which is common. If a cop were threatened it would be taken very seriously, but when a teacher is threatened, the cops don't care, because it is not happening to them. That school district in TX deserves the full support of all freedom loving Americans, they truly get it.

I believe you are mistaken on that point. To the best of my knowledge the following places are where one can not CC in UT.

Airport security areas
Court secure areas
Post offices
National parks and monuments (hopefully this will change)
Federal Buildings
Correctional and Mental Health facilities
House of worship (if posted with BCI)
Private Residence is notice is given
Any area designated secure or prohibited by state of Federal law

California CCW issue is so pathetically small it's a non issue. The vast majority don't know it exists.

Maybe not there in Cupertino but ask that question out in Bakersfield and it's common knowledge. It's also pretty much "shall issue" in that county and many around it.
