do you think it is worth the price to buy a tec 9 (9mm), they look like fun
how much do they usually go for?
are they reliable?
thanks

An ol' pharts slightly (age) biased thinking - IMO folks only buy that stuff because it looks ''cool'' - when in fact IIRC from a practical standpoint, they do not seem overly reliable.

I would if at all possible try and spend a bit more on something better made and more ''serious'' tho not downplaying the fun of (safe) shooting at all! :)

yeah if you want hi cap get a glock 17 w/ one of those monster magazines. would probably be just as fun if not funner because of the reliability.

As to reliability, some are and some aren't... there are all sorts of flavors of Tec 9 and it's knock offs. There was one where the reciever tube was too short for the bolt to reciprocate and eject a casing reliably, which was later changed. Generally the sights are really poor, IIRC the front sight on the original was just a strip of the barrel shroud bent back. On the other hand I remember reading an article in a Shooting Times annual or some such about a college professor who loved hunting squirrels with his. He had a whole method for cooking them in the field, too. I've never owned one, and basically that's because I personally think poorly of them based on limited range loaner experience. Ten or fifteen years ago, they were fairly common and cheap, and age has not made them better guns, just more expensive.

I have shot a few Tec9s. I would have liked to throw them downrange and actually shoot them.

I generally dont like glocks. But I have one, with a few of the monster magazines, and plan on getting more. Its more fun than a Tec9 ever was.

My advice, spend the extra money to get a used G17 and a few 33 round magazines.

If you got to have a ghettoblaster try those Masterpiece Arms MAC clones. Haven't heard too many bad things about them.

I shot one recently at my local shop. They were selling it used for $250.00. It's just a spray gun. It was cool the first few seconds but I don't see a point to it. It's not something that can be used in defense and it's not something that can be used in serious shooting. It's not something where you can take your time, aim and hit dead center. I personally wouldn't own one.

You will have more fun with a good 22 semi-auto (at least I do).

You will spend less $ on a good 22 autoloader.

You will not shoot through your apartment wall with a good 22 (and your stairwell, and your neighbor’s wall, and their ceiling).

You will not get the cool status with your 10/22 or Marlin.(unless you spend more $ on the 10.22 and trick it out with all the cool stuff)

You will not get laughed at with a good 22. (I would, but probably not anyone else)

A Glock 17 with one of those 30-something round mags would be a much more grown up choice, with the added bonus of ghettobalsticality(is that a word?)

That is just one very opinionated mans opinion.

For what you would have to pay for a POS like that you can have your choice of several real guns that you can carry and hit your target with.

There's nothing wrong with having one for fun. :D It is a fun spray gun, not accurate like HK USP or others, but it's fun nonetheless. You will have to put up with some reliability problems, usually due to magazine tolerance, but as long as you do not depend on it as your only pistol, why not have fun with your guns? It's a blast, and it's a nice show piece.

A friend has a Ruger P85 and several 30 round magazines. I keep telling him he needs to put training wheels on it.

No experience with the tec9, never been much into spray and pray.

Is it worth the price? You are the only one who can answer that question.

By the way, welcome to the forums. Judging from the subject of your question you are probably sick enough to fit right in. LOL.

Tec-9

Great IDPA gun, right up there with a Jennings. Alternatively, with a red dot and some custom gunsmithing you're ready for high-level IPSC competition.

Lots of aftermarket options for fine-tuning accuracy and trigger feel; the Volquartsen kit comes recommended. They're also good for taking varmints and small game with carefully tailored handloads.

Heh. Just kidding. ;)

They are both good for holding sideways out your car window while you quickly empty the mag in the general direction of the three guys that just ripped you off on the last drug deal.

Other than that they both don't have much of a purpose in life.

Thanks a lot for the advice it really has helped, i will probably look more into buying a better pistol, unless i find a tec really cheap heh

I'm already irritable enough as it is without having to put up with a firearm that reliably jams.

Besides, magazine changes are a pain, at least on the ones I've handled.

In my experience, few things are as irritating at the range as an autoloader that jams. Save yourself frustration - buy something reliable.

On that note, I once owned an Action Arms/IMI micro uzi, (SA only) complete with DeSantis shoulder rig that was utterly absurd... and the thing shot like you wouldn't believe. Possibly because it hung at the end of your arm like a little brick, the thing would just chew the center out of targets. I'm sorry I ever sold it.
I notice that in the last CDNN flyer I got, they're selling the Claridge Hi-Tec, which is of course (maybe) the official firearm of Arnie in "Total Recall". I have to admit I'm sort of tempted late at night to get one and have "Get your A$$ to Mars!" engraved on it.
Then again, I don't go by Logan5 because I'm immune to the lure of questionable science fiction movies.

TEC-9's (and the more PC-looking DC-9 that succeeded it) are cool-looking but have a reputation for being very unreliable. A Glock 17 will do everything a TEC-9 will, just better. If you like the looks of the TEC-9 type firearm, there are probably higher quality 9mm carbines out there that will function much better.

Why get a tec?

Because the anti's hate 'em. Listed in the '94 ban by name due to it's futuristic appearance.

Personbally, I have a tec22; cheaper to shoot the the tec9, jams far less, and uses 10/22 mags.

Cheaply made, not accurate. No good for competition, no good for self defense. But I shoot it for fun, and it works at at that.

Parts and accessories are impossible to find tho, and the firing pins are known to break.

An MPA30 (mac clone)will set you back a bit more, uses cheap sten mags, very solidly made, almost 10lb (well, no, but feels like it) -- or vector arms sells uzi's for around $600 (out of stock when i last looked).

Sometimes what you want to shoot isn't the "grown up choice". I have the tec, mpa30, and uzi. and drive a sports car. Like I tell my wife, no, I won't grow up.

mpa30 price

Probably expect 300-350 for the stock mpa30, side charger and top rail is a bit more. (but get the side charger..top chargers suck)

Mags were $10 each (30rnd) when I got mine.

I got mine from rpbusa.com, but they don't seem to be around anymore :(

Mine is a pre-94, so it does not have the threaded barrel, I need to get that upgrade...

Any of the mac forums would have more details...

MPA is still around. Ive heard good things about them.

another thing to consider about buying an intra tec.......if it breaks, youre going to pay a real premium for parts. they went out of business many years ago. theres not alot to them, plastic that has a tendancy to crack and a very thin trigger mechanism.

get an early mac made by SWD or the newer version by MPA. the stuff made inbetween doesnt seem as good.

I've got a Tec 9 and its fun to shoot... My son's friends don't care if it shoots or not...they just love the looks of it. I have the screw on barrel extension & fake silencer and they think thats "cool" Its a plinker and thats it... I would not be using it as a defensive firearm.

c'mon, guys aren't you being a little harsh? i mean the tec-9 wasn't intended for accuracy but it's just buttloads of fun. my friend has an ab-10 (same thing, mostly) and it runs great. had a few problems with some mags, but when you find good mags the thing will run all day. more accurate than you'd think, but not exactly in the same league as custom pistols, it's not supposed to be. as far as a defense gun, it's accurate enough for close range work and if they're far enough away that you couldn't hit 'em you can probably run. of course, that's not the point. the gun is definitely worth the couple hundred you'd spend on it for the fun you get out of it. i've even seen one version with a thumb safety.
