Students at a high school in the heart of California's "liberal country" say they've had enough of leftist "brainwashing" by their teachers, so they're joining forces to promote their own ideology.

Along with the Environmental Club, Hate Stops Here, and the Gay-Straight Alliance, the Conservative Club now has a place at Rancho Cotate High in Sonoma County.

"We're being brainwashed by the liberal bias of teachers. It's everywhere," freshman Keith Butler told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

The Conservative Club was founded by Tim Bueler, a 16-year-old junior who reportedly looks up to talk-show hosts Michael Savage and Bill O'Reilly. He says he's using the First Amendment to promote a Christian viewpoint he believes doesn't usually sit well with most teachers and administrators, not to mention his fellow students.

"We obviously believe the liberals are trying to destroy everything in America that our forefathers fought and died for," Bueler, whose late grandfather survived Pearl Harbor, told the paper.

"I was just tired of the one-sided arguments of liberal teachers who mold the curriculum to their point of view. Basically, the Conservative Club was formed to show the other side of the spectrum and another point of view."

As an example, Bueler says one of his professors refers in class to President Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as "idiots," while other teachers slam Republicans and conservatives as greedy capitalists, racists and sexists.

The motto for the club sounds like it could have come straight out of the mouth of Michael Savage: "Protecting our borders, language and culture." The slogan has prompted some students to call the club racist and sexist.

Bueler denies the allegations, as both female students and minorities are members.

Complaints about liberal voices at school have been more frequently associated with college campuses than high school.

As WorldNetDaily reported in September, a report found liberal speakers outnumber conservative voices at the nation's top universities' graduation ceremonies by a wide margin, confirming to campus critics that students are bombarded with one-sided political stances.

The Center for the Study of Popular Culture, which examined the political views of commencement speakers at the nation's elite colleges and universities, found those with liberal ideas outnumbered conservative speakers 226-15 over a 10-year period.

Meanwhile, back at Rancho Cotate, the Conservative Club has fired up controversy by hosting an NRA member who gave a speech titled "We Need More Guns in Schools."

The presentation suggested if more teachers had firearms, there would be fewer tragedies like the slaughter at Columbine High in Littleton, Colo.

Michael Watenpaugh, superintendent of the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District told the Press-Democrat that until the club was formed, there had been no complaints about a liberal bias.

"All of our classroom teachers have a duty and responsibility to present both sides of issues," he said.

The club's adviser, English teacher Bernadette Tucker, said she decided to take part to help the students exercise their First Amendment rights.

"Just because something is not popular it doesn't mean you can't say it," Tucker said, according to the report.

And according to at least one student member, the Conservative Club is having an impact by making teachers more cognizant to present a variety of viewpoints.

"There's been a change," 16-year-old Ryan Riekena said. "One of my teachers is already saying we have to look at both sides on every issue."

"Several teachers were noted to be drooling and turning 3 shades of purple, with eyes bugging out at the mention of "NRA". :neener:

Wow. And in the last place I would have suspected, the occasional person is still born with a spine.

Good on 'em!

I had a VERY liberal teacher for a civics instructor my senior year of high school. She told us that since we were pretty much old enough to vote that we were old enough to voice our opinions in class, provided we were respectful.

She didn't get away with much!

I hope we see more of this at the high school level. I wish it could happen at even younger ages, but I think the kids in junior high and lower levels just aren't ready to make that sort of commitment and then be able to back it up with reasoned arguments like high schoolers.

Gotta start somewhere though!

Good thing to hear, wouldn't surprise me any if I know the area this happened in, but it would be great to see more of it!

That is one darn smart 16 year old.

I wish I was that intelligent when I was 16.

HALLELUIA!

May a bright ray of heaven shine upon those smart conservative kids!

WE NEED MORE GOD AND COUNTRY IN OUR SCHOOLS!
I'm not up for giving the youth in schools guns, because frankly I just dont trust their immaturity, people need to be taught from a young age gun safety and responsibilities that that entails.

Especially God. All the damn school shootings, and they wonder why. In the 50s it was customary for schools to have a rifle range, and there weren't any school shootings. Its the degradation of patriotism and religion in our society and in our schools that has COMPLETELY forked up the youth of America.

and OMG have you watched the news lately?
They never report any stories where firearms have been used in self defense, when it has been researched and proven time and time again that legal guns make up only a small portion of crime, the larger portions being ilegal guns, knives, clubs, hands, etc.
And since gun control only gets rid of LEGAL guns.....

Examples: 1976, Washington DC enacts strict-ars gun control. Crime rises 134%, while violent crime in the country decreases by 2%

Vermont: practically no gun control. "It recognizes the right of any Vermonter who has not otherwise been prohibited from owning a firearm to carry concealed weapons without a permit or license. Yet Vermont has one of the lowest crime rates in America, ranking 49 out of 50 in all crimes and 47th in murders. "

Even in TX, where I live, in 1995 we got concealed carry rights.
Aggravated assault fell from 429 to 370 per 100,000
Robberies fell from 180 to 147 per 100,000
Rape fell from 46 to 38 per 100,000-
Murders fell from 9 to 6 per 100,000- 33%

AND crime remained relatively stable before this was enacted, which eliminated the possibility that this was enacted during a decrease in crime, which is always a sly democratic politician's way out.

And PLEASE don't blame videogames, I HATE it when they try to pull that one off...
sad....

I am only 16 and I have figured out why America is so damn violent.
Whats wrong with the full grown adults who want to ban religion in schools?
IDIOTS
I am an atheist but I realize the role religion plays in teaching kids right from wrong

Kids need religion, they are to stupid to be nice to each other without someone else telling them to do so, and they can't realize that if everyone acted on their own behalf, this world would SUCK!
I HATE ANTI-RELIGIONISTS!!!!
AARRGG!!!!!!!

Feels good to let it out.
Ahh, much better.:)

N3rday

Hey, you are one smart kid for 16!:D

You have the freedom to choose atheism, as others have the freedom to choose religiosity- the two can co-exist if each group would only respect the choices of the other and not try to force their way of life on each other.

Pretty simple huh?;)

Always keep an open mind.

Yeah, its hard to be atheist and be associated with the idiots who want to ban religion...
Now whenever somebody says the word they assume you hate religion.

I hope theres a God...because they need some SMITING!

I wish...

Hey, you are one smart kid for 16!

Huh? I wish some of these way-over-sixteen "kids" were that smart. If they were, we would have never heard of the Klintons nor would we be having the gun-grabbers trying to destroy America.

rr

Well, I don't consider myself too smart...

Just correct:D

I'm from Texas, so I have to be at least a little arrogant!

When I was in high school, students would have their 30-30 in their truck gun rack so they could go deer hunting after school. No one thought twice about it.

After 9-11, the jr high teacher of one of my neighbors children had the class write a paper. The subject was "how 9-11 is the fault of the USA". The idiots are driving the bus now!

speaking of guns in racks on school property...

A friend of mine who just turned 72 was a kid a while ago. His father had a huge flock of chickens for serving in his restaurant. The chickens were in a huge outdoor pen right near the school.

Friend took a shotgun to school and had a few shells in his pockets. If a chicken hawk showed up the hens would squawk and he'd grab the gun, load it on the run and go out and blast away at the hawks. He said he never hit a hawk, but he discouraged a few.

Oh, how times have changed!

Now if you support your second amendment rights, people think your'e a crazy gun nut.

If you support your first amendment rights, people think you are a saint.

How did we come to this? I guess we could blame it on the downfall of religion or patriotism. Also, the disintigration of the familial unit. People just aren't a community anymore. I want people to smile at each other on the street like they used to. Howabout a "hi, neighbor!" or something!

People are so caught up in their own lives that they don't even care about anyone else...people nowadays think your weird if you smile at them. I might smile at a girl and they'd think I was a stalker or something. Crazy.

We have witnessed the fall of the friendly 'hello'. Sucks, too

p.s. hey cool, I'm a senior member! How did that happen?

Just hangin' around here makes you all growed up!;)

By religion in schools, you dont mean forced group prayer and preachers leading schools, do you? I have no problem with students exercising their right to religion on school grounds, but I dont think a state employee should be leading a mandatory religious affair. However, if a "[insert religion] club" asks a teacher/administrator/janitor/whomever to lead something, then more power to them.

That said, I applaud that conservative club. 2dogs, you owe the Department of Computing Services @ the University of Arkansas a new keyboard.:D

Its good that these kids are speaking up now because when they get to colleges like I am in noone will listen. I routinely interact with professors that are so biased and pompous that they believe only academics at their level have the intelligence to make informed political views. By following that flow of logic these teachers justify their liberal views by claiming that all those that disagree with them are brainwashed by the government. Now, I will admit that being a college professor is a pretty distinguished position. Still, I have known many vets and seniors who recieved less formal education than these professors that offer all who will listen to them wisdom and knowledge that these teachers can only pray for.
