Tell me about Cimarron revolvers

I have a Cimarron Frontier and I really like it.

Made by Pietta with a four click hammer. Nice gun for the money.

I would get it.

Sometime ago I was looking over a Cimmaron at the LGS. Nice and I intended to take it home. Beside it was a Taylor & Co. without the color case hardened frame and I just had to see what it felt like. Hey, 1860 Army grip (big plus to me) and a better trigger so I left with it instead. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Cimmaron but I Iiked the Taylor better. It's all in personal choice.

I settled on a Uberti 1873 Cattleman, bought it yesterday. Took it to the range this afternoon along with my Henry rifle and my S&W M25-5. I set up my chronograph to see what kinds of velocity I was getting with my loads, I thought they would be close to 800 fps according to the load data. Not too far off, the 4" S&W was running about 740 fps, the 5-1/2" Uberti was at 780-ish, and the rifle was about 875 on the same loads (9.9 grains AA#5 and a 250 grain plated RNFP). I put 50 rounds through the Uberti shooting at steel plates, I'm going to need to set up some paper targets and see where my rounds are going. I think I'm shooting a bit high at the 25 yard targets, but I did hit the 8" steel plates at 15 yards pretty well. I like this SAA, will probably pick up another one in a month or two. There was a LGS about 15 miles away that had this one, price was right.

If you have any Unique, 8.0gr with that same bullet ought to put a smile on your face. It sure works with my three .45 Colts.

I bought a Cimarron Frontier (Pietta) last year. Had a pretty negative experience which I recounted here.

The vast majority of feedback I read about Pietta is positive. Mine may have just been a fluke. In any event, the Cimarron customer experience was less than stellar. I won’t say it was horrible, just not good. They resolved the issue in the end, but took 5 months, a lot of radio silence, and two trips to their warranty gunsmith. I washed my hands of the gun the first chance I had. Just didn’t trust it after the experience I had.

I am not likely to buy from Cimarron in the future, but would maybe take a chance on another Pietta — if I had the chance to inspect thoroughly before buying.

I looked at three Pietta's at my local CAL Ranch a week ago. The revolvers themselves were just fine, felt good, lockup tight, but the cheap plastic grips on all three were terrible, not fitted correctly, and would be the first ting to go right off the bat. Other than that, I would have taken one home if the fund had been available. :)

Uberti makes fine sixguns. If I have a major criticism of Uberti is that they do not know how to properly harden screws and sometimes over-torque them, which can make removal challenging.

The main advantage of Ubertis marketed by Cimarron is that the markings may be closer to the originals than some other sellers. Both of these are Ubertis. The Model P is a Cimarron Old Model while the Bisley was imported and sold by Dixie Gunworks. Both are in .44-40.

Note: Both shot low out of the box. After I settled on a load I filed the front sight down to zero for elevation. Windage was fine OOB. In the pic, I had not yet altered the Model P.

Of the two Italian replicas I have, both in .45 Colt, the Uberti/Taylors shot to POA right out of the box. The Pietta needed some fiddling, so, filed down front sight a wee bit and worked on trigger pull. Presto!, shooting fine. Really like those .45 Colt type revolvers.
