I am always looking for another gunstore to check out in Houston. I came across Ed's Firearms on an internet listing of FFL holders. Site seems a bit broken, just wondering what kind of reputation they have.

While your at it, if you know anything about these guys I would appreciate hearing about it too.

Class III Arms
Republic Arms
Ammo Dump
SOG Armory

I already have personal experience with the big dogs Fountain, Collectors, Gander, Carters and Jim Pruetts. I think we all do so no real need to discuss those unless you have a funny/interesting story.

I will add that I have also personally dealt with Talon Arms and Tomball Pawn several times and found them to be top notch.

Thanks,

Monkeybear

Not really a shop, but Parkhill Gunworks sells a few guns. They do FFL transfers for 20 or 25 and have always been real nice. So far as I've heard they're good gunsmiths also, though I haven't used them yet.

Ammo Dump on S. Post Oak has overpriced stuff and a junky store. Have no idea where they make their money.

A Gun Shop off of Hwy 6 owned by Fred. Good store. Wont be as big as Pruetts but they usually have nice stuff and their prices arent outrageous. They also took care of me every single time and made things right. Great place

Dose Parkhill have a website or email address?

I have never done business with them but I remember a gentleman who used to run a place called Parkhill over in the Heights He had a big black dog and always a different boat in the parking lot. He was a good guy, wouldn't mind giving him my business.

Parkhill Gunworks
617 E 20th St
Houston, TX 77008
(713) 861-3234

No website or email that I know of.

Not quite "in" Houston per se, but in Tomball you can find both Tomball Pawn (Excellent gun and ammo selection, they also sell new guns) and Bob's Wild West, a neat little store with a lot of collector's gun and some mil-surps. Bob's is worth checking out just to gawk at his collection of first-generation Colts.

10Ring is a shop for reloading supplies in NW Houston that has some other gun stuff as well.
(10ring.com)

There was another gun shop/ Shooting range a lot like Carter's but not quite as large that I saw the other day down just south of houston on FM 521, I can't remember the name though.

More Houston stores

OK,

1st, Class III Arms is a small place with a sampling of Rock River AR’s. I did not remember seeing over 6 guns in the entire store. They are more of a manufacturer and supplier than a gun retailer. If you want a RR AR with something special they would probably fit the bill.

2nd, Republic Arms is a good store for some specialty items. Art, the owner, is probably the best resource in Houston for suppressors and machine guns. He makes his money as a Class III dealer and a nice guy with a good idea on how to get what you want in those areas. The shop does have some handguns, a few rifles and a good ammo selection. You see him at the bigger local gun shows. He also does transfers, so if you find something on GunBroker, he will receive and process the paperwork for a fee.

3rd, Ammo Dump is a dump. Potato Judge said it correctly, +1 on overpriced and +1 on junky. Bad (or good, depending on how you look at it) news is that he is going out of business in the next week or week after. He seems to have lost his ability to renew his dealer license due to a paperwork issue. I think he made his money selling overpriced ammo to cops and other LE who did not shop around. He used to deal in Class III, but was pricey. Only thing he had in stock two weeks ago was a .380 MAC full auto for about 6K (about $2,500 over current market). Inventory is a mixed bag of assault weapons and police carry type pistols. He does have a pile of parts, and promises that prices will drop to clear out inventory prior to closing. I will check in next week for any deals, not expecting too many.

4th, SOG Armory is a good gun show retailer. I have never been to their store front location. They specialize in the stuff on their website (duh) and carry good quality stuff for the black rifles. I have purchased from them accessories that are currently serving in Iraq with a family member (1Lt, Infantry (Airborne)), and he is not disappointed.

Others worth mentioning:

Sportsman Outlet in Humble. You may find references to this once good store, but it burned down a couple of months ago. I understand that Gary, the owner, did not have proper insurance coverage and lost his butt financially in the tragedy. Unfortunately they probably will not be rebuilding due to the money thing.

East Tex Gun Range on HWY 59 between the loop and the belt is a small range serving the local population. A few handguns and an indoor range, nothing real exciting.

There is a surplus store an exit or two from there (the one with the airplane on the roof and the jeep stuck to a pole out front) that has guns, mostly low dollar stuff and magazines. A lot of AK type gear and parts. Plus they have true military surplus. Not a bad place to stop and walk through, plus it doubles as a pawn shop.

Pasadena has the Pasadena Gun Range off HWY 225. Not as good as it was 20 years ago, but deals in lower priced stuff. Serves the market it is in, with a place to shoot and may still rent machine guns.

Don’t forget about Bass Pro Shops in Katy, there is a new one opening at the intersection of 288 and Beltway 8 in a few months.

American Shooting Center out on Westheimer past HWY 6 has a good selection of long guns. They are proud of them, but a good selection of higher quality shotguns.

There is a range out in Conroe that is supposed to have a good selection of stuff in their store, but I haven’t ventured out there in years. Maybe someone else can tell us about them.

Bailey’s is out off Almeda Road south of the Beltway. Good rifle and pistol range (I forget if they still have scattergun ranges) and a good shop with it. Mostly hunting type of stuff in there, gets real busy before deer season opens. Don’t remember too many assault rifles or their accessories.

If you want to look at the upper end of hunting rifles and shotguns, check out Briley’s on Lumpkin, at 610 and the Beltway (town and country area). They have a gun shop to go with their gunsmithing business. They also have a small assortment of target pistols, for the action shooter type. Friendly folks in there who are proud of their work and products (read “expensive”).

Clear Creek Gun Range on FM 1266 in Friendswood. Not impressed, but may be worth a look if you are traveling south. At least it is close to the freeway. Small selection, high prices and had a hard time finding it open.

Now if you are in Seabrook, you might want to stop at Marburgers on the east side of 146. They are about the only hunting store in the area (except Wal-Mart) and serve both gun guys and fishermen. Don’t expect to find a deal in there; almost everything is new in the box stuff.

There is also Top Gun off Beverly Hills in the Galleria area. New owners don’t seem as….. how to say this politically correct………..ummmm……minority unfriendly as the past ones. I never experienced anything, but a buddy of mine, who is of Asian heritage, did. Nice indoor range, with a good selection of pistols and a few rifles and home defense type guns. I qualified for my first CHL there, and haven’t been back to shoot (too far to drive), but have visited to look around. One of the better civilian orientated places for gun leather and holsters.

Not open yet, but the gun departments at the two Orvis stores are scheduled to open this month. You can expect to find a concentration on medium end Beretta shotguns, Orvis labeled Beretta shotguns, and maybe a rifle or two. Custom gun fitting will be available if you want something special. The shops in the Orvis stores will be independently operated by Beretta employees. (Funny story, the Beretta sales manager I met told me that they will be carrying a Sako in .400 Win. Mag. WOW, I hope so, considering that I can’t find anything on the internet about a .400 Win Mag, and Winchester doesn’t have anything about it on their web site. I really hope he in not as full of S#$T as I think he is, and they will really have one.) It is reported that they will not have any handguns or ammo available for purchase. The smaller store is on Westheimer, west of the Galleria, and the larger store is out in the Woodlands, near the mall.

Well that is all I remember now, if I come up with another place or two I will let you know.

Brileys is actually near the Beltway and I-10, lots of good stuff to look at when I was in a year or so ago, also some good sunsmiths on staff.

Not sure what is up with Fred at A Gun SHop on Hwy. 6. I used to buy from him, and had some transfers done. I was in about six months ago and he said he was goping to move, and also mentioned he wasn't going to do transfers any more because it was a hassle.

They do rent machine guns. Among them are an MP5, M16A1, Thompson, M3 "Grease Gun", Uzi, and I'm probably forgetting a couple.

Carters Country in Spring has good deals now and then, but a lot of the time they are way over priced. Their range is ok, my biggest complaint is that there are morons there shooting who have no business handling firearms, let alone shooting them (gun safety). Their pistol range is strange in the fact that the plywood over hang is way too low, I have shot through it on several occasion, because I am 6'2" and its basically in my way. I guess they dont want people shooting high and over the berm, but its ridiculious how low it is.

Gander Mountain is good for a laugh as most of their prices are jacked up high, the one in spring is never stocked well and they dont even have a basic selection of ammo.

Tomball pawn seems decent from what I have heard, thats the next place on my list to visit.

I agree about Carter's Country. That is the most unsafe shooting range I have been to. No one listens to the range officers announcements about unloading your firearms and stepping away from the bench and the range officers do nothing about it. I hate having laser sights paint my chest area also. That overhang is horrible. They should just build up their berm. With all the money they make you'd think they could afford it.

Fountain Firearms is a good place to go. You will always find cheaper prices on the internet, but as far as gun stores go, they are good people to deal with.

The other thing that I hate about Carters is that your not suppose to write or tape up their targets, but that hang over is the worse. They used to put pieces of marking tape that dangled down from the plywood overhang, I dont know what the point of that was.

The place in Conroe is Shooters Station - east of I45 and just before you get to the dam on 105. They have a fair selection of guns and have a sale table thats OK I guess. The range is pretty good and they don't give anyone any trouble as long as you follow the rules.

That's odd about Fountain. Their adds for used guns on Gunbroker are usually about 100% above retail

forget Gun"makes you"Broker listings, they're not any real indicator of the "real" prices at fountain. On most of their stock fountain is in line with or better than the other shops in town, and if you need to order something better than most (try a special order at a Carter country, last i checked they wanted around 120% of MSRP to get you something not on the shelf).
i don't know what exactly some folks have against Fountain, the prices are average to good, and the service has been 95% good (that 5% = guy who is no longer there).
if it's any indicator, I live as my profile says in Lake Jackson, an hour or more from ANY of the shops mentioned here, I do business with three gun stores, my prefered shop AAMI in angleton, Carter Country for Pro-shot cleaning tools, and Fountain for when AAMI can't get it or wants $100+ over what fountain lists.

If you want the flat out best prices on new firearms, then you need to go to an Academy store. If you go to one outside the Houston city limits I think you save a little on sales tax. The one in Katy usually has a good selection.

If you are in the market for used firearms and know how to properly inspect a used gun, then pawn shops are the only way to go and the ones in lower income parts of town are where the best deals are usually found.

Bass Pro shop at Katy mills mall. Fair selection, but for the most part over priced. They sometimes have great sales on ammunition, but they are loss-leader items and they will not let you buy more than a half or full case at a time, so you have to go back several times

Collector Firearms at Richmond and Fondren. Great selection, but prices are higher than a giraffe’s ass, and certain members of the sales staff can be snobbish. They cater to high end buyers who don’t mind – wish I was one. You can often find low production custom firearms there that would normally take you 12 months to order. If you are into expensive antique firearms you will be in heaven at this place. Fun place to go even if you can't afford their wares.

Fountain Fireams on Hwy 6 South, between Hwy 90 and Bellaire. Fair selection and prices are sometimes fair and sometimes not. If you need Glock parts, it is the place to go. They take trades, but won't, or can't give you much for them.

Carters Country all locations. Good selection, high prices and usually clueless lazy sales people. I do not shop there, ever, because Carter supported the assault weapons ban. Screw him and his stores.

Ammo Dump. Over priced junk and retarded snobby sales force. Haven't been there in a long time and they may be out of business.

Baileys - South Houston area. Been a long time but they did have a fair selection. Don't remember if prices were fair.

Top Gun on Beverly Hills near Westheimer and Fountainview. Pretty good selection, but a little pricey. Knowledgeable and mostly friendly sales people. Act like an idiot and they will treat you like an idiot. Indoor range there, but pricey.

Gander Mountain any location. Great selection that you can handle, but sometimes pricey. They have great sales from time to time.

Briley’s off Sam Houston toll road near I-10. Great place if you are looking for expensive shotguns and hit the lottery recently. I have had custom work done there and on ALL THREE occasions they tried to charge me more, after the work, than they quoted me. Maybe their normally rich clients don’t bat an eye at being over charged, but I will never be back.

Shooters Station in Conroe. Small shop with decent selection. Most stuff is at MSRP. One salesman (short & stocky) is very friendly, but the other one has something lodged in his posterior. Indoor range at that location.

Rebel Arms in Pasadena. Only have black power (but hell of a selection) and bows. I guess they lost their FFL. Haven’t been there in a long while and don’t know if they are even still there.

A-Gun Shop at Hwy 6 and Clay Road. Not much of a selection and I get the feeling that the guy who owns the place would tell you ANYTHING to make a sale. Every thing they have is limited production, hard to get and may soon go up in price – according to him. Won't be back.

Sportsmans Outlet in Humble. Great place, MSRP on most items. Limited selection. Indoor range at location. It will be a shame if the fellow can’t rebuild after the fire.

American Shooting Center. Sell only long guns and shot guns and are very proud of them. No pistols any more. Outdoor range at location. Decent ammo selection but pricey.

A little history. Many years ago there was a place off Chimney Rock near 59 South named Deep River Armory that was a fun place to shop, but I was too young to remember if the prices were fair. I believe they became Collectors Firearms and then Collectors split into Collectors and Fountain Firearms. Alamo Firearms in Bellaire had a decent selection and somewhat fair prices, but some scumbag crap sack shot the owner, and the guys who took over afterwards could not make a go of it. Use to be a place called Contex in Conroe that was pretty nice near 105 and Frazier, and later old downtown Conroe, but went out of business.

SOG Armory – never been there.

Republic Arms – never been there

Class III Arms – never been there

Im sorry to hear that Tex, Fred who owns A Gun Shop has been top notch in my book. Never bull****ted me and never forced a sale I didnt want. For instance when my gf wanted a nice little gun he didnt push Glock or HK or Sig or even a 1911. He asked what we wanted and she liked the Bersa .380 and he sold it too us and got us a box of ammo for free.

Anyways sorry to hear that. Maybe you can PM or email me at [email protected] with the specifics of your trip there :) Thanks so much

sportsmans outlet?

Acera

how good is your info about Gary not rebuilding?
last time i talked to the guys that shot idp there they seemed sure that he is rebuilding.
if he does not that will be a shame, it is a long drive to shooters station in conroe!:(

Rebel Arms was forced out of business by questionable tactics of developers that built a subdivision next to his range (blackpowder only). Ronnie, the owner thought he was safe with his business near the city dump..... he was wrong :(.

Also to add.

Jim Pruetts shop is nice and could be a top shop in Houston, but they are overpriced, someone here on the THR shopped for a USP and saved like $150 buying it at Tomball pawn, instead of Pruetts.

I have posted this a million times here and sorry if its getting old, but Houston is not exactly the greatest place for gun shops. When I moved here I was very excited, but there isn't what I would call even a "Good" gun shop here. No one sells on a volume basis which could easily be accomplished due to the large amount of gunowners. The best gun shops that I have ever been to still where in the (cringe all of you Texans , Cringe) the Northeast.

I wish someone would open a large gun shop that had decent prices and good service. Until then its going to be FFL transfers and Academy.

one-shot-one last news is a month or so old, so it might have changed. Gary had reasonable prices, on shooting. Just don't talk to him about gun shows, you will get a negative response.

FWIW I drove by Sportsman's Outlet last week and there was no indication of any rebuilding at all. Just the burnt out back half of the range was still standing. The front half of the building has been torn down to the foundation.

If people are looking for another range I saw this one linked on another board: http://www.shilohshooting.com I haven't been there yet and I'm not even sure if they're open for business yet but it looks promising.
