tell me about the .41mag

First, get the current, "Handloader" and read Brian Pearce's article on the .41 Magnum.

Secondly, if you aren't worried about ammo availibility and cost, the .41 will reportedly endure somewhat better than an M29/629, because it has more metal in it because of the smaller holes in bbl. and chambers. Before S&W made the .44 Mags with the "endurance package", .41's were said to last better with full loads. I think it was because the .41 is at the limit of endurance that the N-frame will take without excessive wear.

My next gun in this class will be a M629 .44, though, because they DO now have the endurance features, I won't use full loads a lot, and because .41 ammo is harder to find, more limited in selection, and MAY penetrate less deeply in really large animals, in case I ever had to shoot a big bear or angry elk.

Frankly, either gun will probably do anything that a person really ought to be doing with a sidearm. If you need more than a .41 Magnum, you probably really should be carrying a rifle.

If you see a really clean used .41 at a good price, my advice is to buy it.

And you should read Pearce's article.

Anyone with Ruger Blackhawk 3-Screw .41 mags, feel free to contact me and I'll remove that cheap, unwanted, expensive to shoot, high recoil, heavy POS plaguing you. I'll pay shipping and even provide a nominal fee for your trouble. :)

I've got one. :) It hasn't been back to the factory for the "fix." It's not exactly for sale though.

I know I'm joining this post a bit late, but I just registered.

I have a M58 that gets carried every day OTW. I also have a nickle 58, and a third that is off at a gunsmith (Alpha Precision).

Like Chaim, I settled on the .41 as a compromise. I usually shoot the police load (since that is what the sights are regulated for) which is a 210gr at 950-1000fps in the 4" bbl.

I've found that the Winchester silvertips can usually be found in most gun stores and Tamara once mentioned (on TFL) that Walmart will sometimes carry it. The silvertips are a good defensive load as the recoil is not bad and still give you more than a .357 (175gr and I believe they claim 1300fps).

41 mag M&P

PS M58, I like the name! ;)

There is also a good article on the .41 Remington Mag in this month's Shooting Times. See Joe Coogan on page 77 of the March 2003 issue. The "Lock, Stock and Barrel" column.

41 Mag is great for shooter, reloader

I love my 41 mag Ruger with Dads oversize Fitz Duramite Stag grips that filled in behind the trigger guard and below the grip frame to fill my hand better that the Plow Share Handles that slip in recoil. I had Saeco make 220 gr Keith bullet molds for me and Star Reloader Co. made .4100 sizing dies and top punches for the Saeco 411 bullet just mentioned. I also have carried a Smith 58 as a LEO and still have another one new in the wood case. Have plenty of brass and lead that should last me a good while. Do have extra of the Fitz Blackhawk grips, Star luber dies and Calif Saeco 220 grain 4 cavity molds that have been in storage since 1979.
